The boiler contained 50 ft. of heating surface and 3 sq. ft.<br />

of grate area. The working pressure was 250 lbs. per<br />

square inch. It will be seen from, the plan that there were<br />

two distinct double-cylinder engines ; each pair of cylinders<br />

drove a separate crank shaft. The cylinders were<br />

3 in. diameter, and 6 in. stroke. On the outer end of<br />

each crank shaft was keyed a chain pinion 8 in. diameter,<br />

which communicated motion to the driving-wheel by a<br />

pitch chain on each side. The chain wheel on the axle<br />

was 24 in. diameter.<br />

The engines were placed at an angle, and neatly<br />

boxed in out of sight. The exhaust from the engines<br />

passed into a cast-iron box which formed a baffle plate<br />

at the bottom of the uptake above the fire, where the<br />
