The boiler contained 50 ft. of heating surface and 3 sq. ft.
of grate area. The working pressure was 250 lbs. per
square inch. It will be seen from, the plan that there were
two distinct double-cylinder engines ; each pair of cylinders
drove a separate crank shaft. The cylinders were
3 in. diameter, and 6 in. stroke. On the outer end of

each crank shaft was keyed a chain pinion 8 in. diameter,
which communicated motion to the driving-wheel by a
pitch chain on each side. The chain wheel on the axle
was 24 in. diameter.
The engines were placed at an angle, and neatly
boxed in out of sight. The exhaust from the engines
passed into a cast-iron box which formed a baffle plate
at the bottom of the uptake above the fire, where the
