side. Their crusade against steam on the highway
drove the lighter carriages off the road, and thereby
crushed an important industry.
NASMYTH
About the year 1S27 Mr. James Nasmyth constructed
a small steam carriage, as shown by Fig. 5. Many
successful runs were made with it on the Queensferry
Road, near Edinburgh, carrying six to eight passengers.
The carriage, after running about for some months, was
dismantled, and the engine and boiler sold.

Colonel Maceroni was one of Hancock's most successful
