RHODES Steam Carriages The following interesting particulars of Holt's and Rhodess carriages of 1866 are extracted from The Engineer. Mr. Holt's carriage was sold to Mr. Rhodes, who had previously been making a carriage, which is also illustrated. Mr. Rhodes says of this carriage "it was one he began to build in 1863," and that "when completed it did some very fair running. At first it was direct action on four wheels, and not satisfactory, but when altered to the form as shown in the drawing, it ran splendidly on any road, and over new metal." He also bought the steam carriage from Mr. Holt. Mr. Rhodes made some alterations in it, including the 2 FIG. 17. Mr. Holt's carriage was also owned by Mr. Edwards, who says that the pump did not work well until another clack had been added. Only two cylinders were used by Mr. Edwards. Referring to the pump mentioned in our notice of Mr. Holt's carriage, Mr. Rhodes sends a sketch, from which the annexed engraving is made, saying that he had previously used it on his own carriage.1 In this engraving 1 is the plunger with rings on the end; 2, a cage round pump barrel over the slots with water inlet pipe 5 ; 3, ball delivery valve ; and 4, pack ing, which had not any pressure to withstand. 1 W« are indebted to the editor of The Engineer for a sketch of the pump and description. 26
Self-contained Passenger Coaches - Of this pump he says: "This pump, when running quickly, would lift water in a state of ebullition 3 ft., and force it into the boiler.
