P R E F A C E<br />

T H E present work may be divided into two parts:<br />

the first part deals with ancient and modern steam<br />

carriages, the second treats of road locomotives and<br />

traction engines. The book is practically a continuation<br />

of the author's work published in 1891.' It may be<br />

termed a second series, having a much wider scope, and<br />

bringing the subject down to date ; in the matter of the<br />

two volumes there is very little overlapping. In the<br />

present work additional examples of steam carriages<br />

and road engines are introduced which were not to hand<br />

in the earlier volume. The work is divided as follows:<br />

Chapters I., II.. and III. deal with ancient steam<br />

carriages. Chapters IV. and V. are devoted to modern<br />

examples of steam carriages; the tables and remarks<br />

on Resistances, at the end of Chapter V., were contributed<br />

by Mr. R. Edwards, m.i.c.e., Hastings. The<br />

remaining chapters are devoted to traction engines.<br />

jChapter VI. deals with small road locomotives, employed<br />

for the conveyance of parcels and passengers.<br />

(In Chapter VII. the methods of spring mounting are<br />

described. P'ull particulars of a road train for passenger<br />

and goods traffic are given in Chapter VIII. In<br />

Chapter IX. undertype road locomotives are dealt<br />
