community magazine and business directory
that has been delivered free of charge to every
home in Magor, Undy, Redwick and Rogiet and
cold weather we’ve been having.
On Monday May 6th, Magor Churchmen are
holding their annual May Fayre in The Square,
let’s hope the warmer weather has arrived for
high school children, with a winner in each
group receiving a £15 gift voucher. Please see
MAGOR RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
By John Ford, Magor
A little of the history of the club, its players
and my family’s involvement over the years. It
was formed in the late 1800’s and based at the
Temperance Hall, West End of the village and
matches were played on the pitch opposite.
Pre First World War, my father, Ronald Ford,
was the captain of the team. His brother,
William, was also in the side. Both brothers
served in the war, but William was killed in
action at the age of 19. The 20s saw Ronald
resume as captain. He was joined in the side
by his younger brother, Arthur ‘Buller’ Ford.
Others in the team who looked very fearsome
in the photo I have were the Brace brothers,
Bert Packer, Ossie Thomas and Sid Whitcombe.
In the 30s the team captains were Lyn
Williams and his brother George, both farmers
in the area. From listening to my father, they
were a very good team.
In the 40s after the Second World War, the club
reformed with two teams. It was a mixture of
old and young players. George Williams and
Reg Reece were the captains in that period.
My brother and myself started playing at this
time. Vic Brenchly, ex P.T.I. in the army, was
our fitness trainer. He got us to go down the
moors to cut ten foot logs to exercise with.
Four players to each log and a lot of lifting and
grunting – no nice gym then. Mr Bill Coles was
our sponge and rubbing down with oils man.
They used to say that he made up the oils
himself – I can tell you, the smell was not
sweet.
Towards the end of the 1940s, we had in the
team, Jim Hawkins, ex scrum half from
Newport R.F.C., who also played for
Monmouthshire. Then for good measure, our
next star would be Eawart ‘Bill’ Tamplin, our
village policeman and ex Cardiff and Wales
Second Row Forward and a very good goal
kicker: both finishing their final days with a
4
few games for Magor.
In 1950, Bill Tamplin
was asked if he would bring a Cardiff XV to
play Magor as a benefit match for the local
hall. He did so and it was played on March
16th. His side included 8 internationals, they
won, but it was played in good spirit.
Afterwards, the evening was spent in the
Golden Lion with drinks and a meal.
My playing days ended in 1950 when I
suffered a compound fracture of my left leg,
while playing away at Chepstow. This next bit
might seem funny reading, but as there was no
ambulance available, I was carried down
through the Chepstow streets by 6 team mates
on a trestle table top to the hospital. It was a
very painful and springy ride, I can tell you.
We won the match in the end with 13 men – no
subs then. By the way, my injury and the non
appearance of the ambulance made news in
the local Argus.
TWIT TWOO, RUTH AND HAYLEY
WATCH TO YOU!
Magor, Undy and Llandevenny Community Support
Officers Ruth James and Hayley Brown are flushed
with success after recruiting the 20,000th household
to the Gwent Police OWL Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
Ruth and Hayley have now set themselves a target of
persuading half of all households in the area - around
1,000 - of the value of the scheme. Already nearly 300
are signed up.
The officers send out crime information and prevention
messages via the system, but also give updates on community events.
Recently, Ruth invited Olive, one of two OWL mascots owned by the force, to Magor. The life size
owl was on hand to help sign up local shopkeeper Simon Barter to the scheme - and then lent a
hand to clear snow around the police station in Magor.
BUSINESS IN FOCUS
MAGIC WORDS
Slick, snappy writing has become something of
a lost art these days. I grew up dreaming of
working in magazines, eventually honing my
craft professionally in print and online. Now,
with my labour of love start-up, I’m hoping to
help the community solve their word-related
dilemmas!
Businesses: stuck when it comes to sales
letters or newsletters? Looking for SEOfriendly
web copy or attention-grabbing
Tweets? Need a brochure penning but don't
have the in-house resources? Want to dazzle
customers with a catchy advert but lack
inspiration? Serious or funny, corporate or
funky – I love these kinds of challenges.
Students: as an experienced editor, I can help
you polish up or proofread those troublesome
essays. Jobseekers: I can’t guarantee I’ll get
you the gig, but I can transform a humdrum
CV into a compelling statement, or pen a cover
letter that'll blow a potential employer away.
Web design is a speciality, too – whether you’re
late to the online party and want a site for
your local business, or simply fancy setting up
a homepage where you can host and share
family photo albums.
I even do ‘quirky’ – so if you're after something
more personal, like a strongly worded
complaint or a heartfelt thank you letter, I’m
your man. I, er, draw the line at romantic
poetry though!
The best thing is that, as a local, I’m more than
happy to pop over to Donnie’s for a cuppa and
a slice of cake to chat your specific project over
in person. Rob – Magic Words - 07973 743483
CAN THE REOPENING OF A RAILWAY
STATION BECOME A REALITY?
By Laurence Hando - magorstation@gmail.com
On the evening of Thursday 14th March our
local Campaign group MAGOR (Magor with
Undy Action Group on Rail) held its Public
launch. Over 50 residents responded to a drop
in session to see a display and discuss the
present plans. A further 66 residents crowded
into the Baptist village hall to hear a
presentation on the launch of a campaign to
reopen a Magor with Undy Railway station.
This was followed by debate and
questions/answer session, presided over by
Lord Mike German, who caught a train from
London to come to the villages.
However, do we want a station in the villages
and will any amount of campaigning achieve
this? From the meeting, the answer to this
first part is an overwhelming yes. In fact we
haven’t found one person to disagree. The
second part of the question is more difficult to
answer. Unless we have any secret millionaires
in the village with between £5 and £25 million
pounds going spare! Whatever we do it will be
a hard slog to persuade the powers to be to
release their fingers off the purse strings.
So what is so different about the present
campaign? Well just look at the high powered
dignitaries that attended the meeting. Apart
from Lord German chairing the evening;
Jessica Morden MP, Peter Fox the Leader of
Monmouthshire Council, David Dovey Vice
Chair of the Monmouthshire Council and Chair
of the Joint Rail Working Group, Bryan Jones
the Monmouthshire Cabinet member for
Transport and Member of the SEWTA Board,
Mark Youngman Transport Policy Officer for
Monmouthshire Council and Head of the
SEWTA Rail Working Group. As well as Arriva
trains Wales and more local community
representatives. You don’t see this lot in the
villages very often if at all!
For the first time since the closures of Magor
14
and Undy holts in 1964, we now have a serious
case put forward to justify a Railway station.
In the last decade the volume of rail journeys
has increased by 40% nationally. Severn
Tunnel Junction has seen the flow of
passengers using the train services increase
by 100% in the same period. Since 2007 there
has been modernisation of the facilities at
Severn tunnel Junction and an improved train
service introduced. These have been in the
main as a result of the efforts of STAG (Severn
Tunnel Action Group) a pressure group formed
to combat a series of cuts to the train service
that was being planned for December 2006.
A lot of the increase in the volume of
passengers at Severn Tunnel Junction is due
to a surge in commuters using the station. The
benefits of shorter journey times against car
travel to the centres of Newport, Cardiff and
Bristol. The comparative average peak journey
times for train and car from Severn Tunnel
Junction are: to Newport – by train 10
minutes, by car 30 minutes. To Cardiff 30
minutes by train, by car 60 minutes, to Bristol,
by train 30 minutes, by car 60 minutes. Other
factors are the high cost of parking in the city
centres and Severn bridge tolls for journeys to
England.
A significant number of commuters using
Severn Tunnel Junction originate from the
villages of Magor and Undy where a lot of
people have moved in over the last decade and
have to travel to their places of work. The
majority would be travelling to Bristol. There
is reluctance by people to travel to a point and
then go back on themselves to reach their
destination and then pass where they live and
have to return to it; on their return journey.
Hence the majority of commuters to Newport
and Cardiff have a tendency to drive.
The B4245 is an arterial route
from Chepstow that serves the
population of Caldicot, Portskewett, Rogiet,
Undy, Magor and surrounding areas. The road
is heavily congested at peak times in the
morning and evening and extremely busy at
all other times. There are planned housing
developments at Undy and Portskewett which
will only add to the volume of traffic using this
road. The abandoning of the M4 relief road for
the foreseeable future will also exacerbate the
The Villager - April/May 2013
Magor and Undy, the ever increasing need to
commute to work, the lack of a solution to the
congestion on the B4245, the need to reduce
the carbon footprint, are all justifiable needs to
open a station at Magor with Undy.
In an endeavour to secure the objective of a
new station development for the communities
of Magor and Undy, the action group MAGOR
has been formed. We aspire to open the
We do not suggest that our own Station would
Tunnel junction, which is a Parkway. We
propose an environmentally friendly Walkway
station. In other words, car and congestion
unfriendly. Drop off facilities yes for the few,
the so called “kiss and drop”. But there is no
need for car parking, when that can be
avoided. The new plans for enlarged parking at
Severn Tunnel Junction serves that desire. We
propose a station at the heart of the villages.
There is no better heart than the proposed
Community Centre site on the B4245 and
access to the main bus routes. As a Community
Station, profits from ticket sales can be
ploughed back into the community.
We have an opportunity now to put this case
forward, with the billions being spent on
electrification. If we don’t get our Station in
before the new electric overhead cables, then
we may never achieve our aims. We are aiming
for a date of March 2018 to open a new station.
This timescale is determined by the
replacement rail franchises of 2018. We need
to be discussing with the likes of First Group
about the electric services of the future calling
at Magor, so they can build this into their bid.
This will be a struggle and from the support
already shown, we know the community is
behind us. What we need is help and the
community standing beside us. As many hands
make light work. If you feel you would like to
be actively involved and join the committee or
just willing to help deliver information, help
conduct travel survey’s in your street, please
contact us.
UNDY AFC - WITH A CHANCE AT A THIRD
SUCCESSIVE PROMOTION
As we enter the business end of the season, our
first team still has a good opportunity to
achieve a third successive promotion, and
reach the top tier of The Welsh League. With
nine games remaining we sit 7th in the table, 3
points off a promotion place, with many of our
rivals having played more games. Our
management team are still extremely
optimistic that we can achieve promotion,
firstly because we have a fantastic squad of
players, and secondly because we have not
played anyone in this league that we are
incapable of beating, a point borne out in our
last home game, when we beat runaway league
leaders Goytre, convincingly. Our season
finishes on May 11th, and so the next 5 weeks
will be a very exciting, if not nervous time for
our club.
Our strength in depth is demonstrated by our
Under 18s side topping their very competitive
league, and our reserves sitting a very credible
3rd in their equally competitive Welsh Reserve
League, so on the field we look set for a very
exciting end to the season.
Off the field we continue to receive tremendous
support from our sponsors. We now boast
almost 70 sponsors, all from local businesses
who have given their support, and enabled us
to achieve the levels we have reached. Our
policy has always been to reward our sponsors
by proactively promoting their businesses in
our match programme and our pitch-side
banners. We have also created a business
directory of our sponsors,(shown opposite),
and all players and members are encouraged
to patronise these business wherever
possible. The feedback we have received from
our sponsors has been very positive, and they
are pleased with the coverage their businesses
have enjoyed. At the end of the season we will
hold a sponsors night at the club, where all of
our sponsors will be invited join us for an
evening where we can formally thank them for
their support.
We are always looking for more sponsors, and
if you would be interested in being part of our
team, then please feel free to contact us. I can
assure you good coverage for your business.
Our first team has 3 home games remaining on
April 20th & 27th, and May 4th. and we would
be delighted to welcome you to The Causeway
to watch the climax to our season.
MARSH MATTERS
by Kathy Barclay, Picture by Michael Rodgers
What’s New?
Well we survived the winter and came out the
other side a lot wetter and muddier than
before! We haven’t really been able to step off
the boardwalk without sinking knee deep in
mud or water at any point during the winter.
Which is how it should be I suppose for a
marsh….but I’ve seen drier years!
The wildlife seems oblivious to it really and I
have a secret to share with you…..our friends
the otters have been regular visitors to the
pond area (I’ve heard but not seen!) during
daylight hours. Their footprints were clear to
see in the snow on the boardwalks.
Last years cub and his Mum or Dad have really
taken to a mid-morning splash in front of the
bird hide. Thanks to our keen wildlife spotters
and bird watchers we have some great
photographs.
I thought it would be interesting to tell you a
little more about the lives of our handsome
mammalian friends so here goes:
All about Otters
Our UK otter is known as the Eurasian otter
(Lutra lutra), one of a number of species found
worldwide. They have been around since after
the last ice age and were widespread for
10,000 years but from the mid-1950’s they
suffered a dramatic decline. By the late 1970’s
the only healthy populations were in Scotland
with small numbers remaining in Wales,
Northern and Sout Western England. This
24
decline was closely linked with the use of
organochlorine pesticides such as dieldrin.
These were used in sheep dips and seed
dressings but what we didn’t realise was that
they built up in the food chain to such an
extent that they killed the top predators
including otters. When we stopped using these
chemicals, bird populations recovered quickly
but otters took a little longer.
Today we are finding more and more across
the UK sometimes in some rather surprising
places, like Magor Marsh. They have been
returning to traditional lowland haunts and
establishing themselves firmly in busy urban
centres, often becoming used to people and
active in broad daylight.
Like all mustelids (ferrets, weasels and
mink) they have long slim bodies ideal for
swimming. They are 1 – 1.5 metres long with
half that length taken up with a strong
muscular tail for propulsion through the
water. It’s fur is short and dense and keeps the
skin dry by trapping a layer of air around the
body. They have four webbed feet and can close
their ears and nose when underwater. So it
should come as no surprise that their diet is
mainly waterborne prey – 80% fish and the
rest made up of amphibians, crayfish, ducks
and small mammals (hopefully not too many
water vole!). Otters are one of our top
predators and eat about 1.5kg of fish every
day. They can be distinguished from mink
by their much larger size, more powerful
body, paler grey-brown fur, broader snout
MARSH MATTERS CONTINUED
and broader, pale chest and throat.
Otters breed at any time of year giving birth to
2 or 3 cubs in underground burrows, known as
a 'holt'. Excellent and lithe swimmers, the
young are in the water by 10 weeks of age.
They stay with their mums for up to a year and
then leave to find their own territory. The
male otters don’t have much to do with rearing
the young and even have separate holts to rest
in.
All otters have “home ranges” that have
quieter areas for breeding and have many
resting areas such as underground holts
(pipes and tree roots) and stands of long grass
and scrubby patches. These territories can be
up to 40km for a dog otter (half this size for a
female) and they guard them with their life!
Otters live for between three to four years in
the wild and death these days is more likely to
be as a results of injuries from a territorial
battle. Occasionally otters are killed on the
roads or drown in fish traps and young otters
can sadly die of starvation.
So that’s a bit about the beautiful otter. I hope
you get to see the one visiting Magor Marsh
but you will have to be patient. Please also
remember that otters are highly sensitive
animals – disturbing otters or their habitat is
an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside
Act so tread carefully and quietly.
What’s to Look forward to?
Apart from our otters, kingfishers and
hundreds of nesting birds including Cettis
Warblers and kingfishers - we have some great
events coming up for you. Our website has
INDEPENDENT COUNTY
COUNCILLOR FRANCES TAYLOR
Well the steep learning curve continues. When I
am out and about taking my son to school, at
Cake Saturday or at Undy farmers market, it is
a pleasure to talk to people although my
husband still does without milk some mornings
for some time! I am always struck by how
many people have time to talk and this is one of
the things I really enjoy about living in Magor.
You may have seen some of the measures that
have been agreed by the executive group in the
recent budget such as changes to the residual
waste (rubbish) collection and charging for
services such as the green waste collection,
pest control and increasing the cost of school
meals. If you have any questions, then please
get in touch.
Some of the issues I have been working on are:
• Meeting with Magor Church in Wales
Primary and the Community Council and
Council officers to encourage as much
discussion as possible so that the future of
the school playing field can be resolved.
• Working with the Community Council and
Council officers to find solutions, which will
alleviate the parking/traffic issues in the
Square, improve pedestrian safety and
protect our unique Cenotaph.
• Communicating with Welsh Water and the
Council’s environmental health team to
resolve issues of flooding. To date though
progress has been slower than we’d like but
Welsh Water are finally working with Tesco
to resolve the problems caused by their
private pumping station at the Europark.
• Supporting local organisations to
successfully secure grant funding from
Severnside Area Committee.
• Influencing the Severnside Total Place Plan
to ensure that the needs of Magor with Undy
are well represented.
• Working with MAGOR the action group to
help promote their campaign for a railway
access point in Magor/Undy. By the time you
read this, the group will have held their first
28
open meeting. The group have now
spoken to all the relevant AM’s and
our MP. All local
business have
been canvassed and are
overwhelmingly supportive of the idea. I
continue to support the group in gaining
support from responsible councillors and
officers.
• Working with Council officers, Community
Council and MUSLA to progress appropriate
improvements to our community facilities.
You may be aware that MUSLA are revisiting
their recent bid to the Big Lottery Fund and I
am actively working the cabinet member to
ensure that Monmouthshire Council provides
appropriate support.
• Dealing successfully with varied casework for
residents and businesses including issues
associated with Monmouthshire Housing, the
maintenance of highway verges, removal and
pollarding of trees, planning matters,
environmental health issues, pest control
and matters connected to the extreme
weather.
• Working with other councillors to raise
concerns about the recent Estyn Report. You
may have seen in the press that Welsh
Government has placed Monmouthshire’s
Education service in special measures. All
councillors will need to work together to
scrutinise, support and challenge the
resulting action plan to ensure that our
children get the best education possible.
Did you know Girl
Guiding is booming in
Magor and Undy?
There is a Rainbows unit, which meets on a
Monday. There are two Brownie packs, 1st
Undy which meets on a Monday at Undy
church and community hall, and 2nd
Magor Brownies which meets on a Tuesday
at Magor Scout and Guide Hut.
There is also a Guide and Senior section
which meets on a Friday in St Mary’s
church centre.
“Girl Guiding is all about giving girls and
young women a space where they can be
themselves, have fun, build brilliant
friendships, gain valuable life skills and
make a positive difference to their lives and
their communities.”
Waiting lists apply for all units as demand
is high. Due to data protection leaders are
no longer able to hold paper waiting lists – a
new system came into operation at the
beginning of the year, where girls need to
be registered on the Girl Guiding website by
a parent or guardian.
UNIVERSITY TUITION FEES
September 2012 ushered in a new era for
university tuition fees, with some
establishments able to charge up to £9,000 a
year – almost a threefold increase
(universities in Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland are also able to raise their fees from
2012 but their home students will not be
affected). As a parent or a young adult, the
decision to go to university could now be one of
the biggest investments that you ever make.
While support is available for most students so
that tuition fees do not need to be paid up
front, this will depend on the family's total
income. Again, maintenance loans and grants
are also available but on a mean's tested basis
such as where you live. Students starting this
year will begin to pay back their student loan
36
www.broomfield.co.uk
info@broomfield.co.uk
Offices in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea
once they earn £21,000 a year, in addition to
the interest accrued charged at the rate of RPI
inflation, plus three per cent (again means
assessed). It's not surprising that initial
reports suggest the new fees have affected the
numbers applying for university this year.
With this in mind it is now more important
than ever to consider how you can plan to
assist with funding your child’s higher
education costs, as it is estimated that for
those starting this year eventual student debt
could rise to £40,000 and beyond.
THE DALE LLEWELLYN
MEMORIAL FESTIVAL OF
SCHOOL RUGBY
“Don’t count each day make each day count”
was Dales Advice to young people and this was
the Theme of the festival. The Young players
took this to heart and made each ball count
and they played with “Pride and won or lost
with dignity.” Emphasis is placed on having
fun and playing the game with friends, and
close friendships being formed between the
schools through a shared love of the game.
The Undy Rugby Academy hosted a mini
school rugby festival in memory of Dale
Llewellyn who died on January 2nd 2013. At
the age of 25. Dale was known to the schools
through his work with Attribute Sports which
took him into many schools were he coached
rugby.
The festival attracted five schools,
Magor/Undy, Eveswell, Mount Pleasant,
Shirenewton and Northcote Lodge School,
London. The event was very successful with
over 75 primary school children playing a
very high standard of rugby. They were
refereed by Simon Alsopp a Professional WRU
referee. All the children are taught to respect
each other and value the key role of the
referee.
Northcote Lodge were the festival winners
with Eveswell School runners up. The
Sportsman award went to Shirenewton
School. The games were hard fought and
highly competitive but most of all everyone
had fun and learnt a lot. Trophies were
presented by the Mrs Llewellyn who attend
the event with her family.
DIG FOR VICTORY AT
MAGOR SCHOOL
A number of parents, children, and
grandparents have been trying to get Magor
Church in Wales School gardens in shape
ready for spring. The School’s PTA have done a
grand job in organising volunteers to bring
their forks, spades and goodwill to create
garden spaces for our children to enjoy.
The PTA is keen to plant things, which the
children can quickly see the benefit from and
are concentrating on filling the available space
with edibles, which can be picked and eaten
straight from the plant. If you would like to get
involved then we’d be delighted to have you
join the weekend digging team. Alternatively,
perhaps you could help with a little
maintenance over the growing season?
If you don’t fancy gardening or digging then
perhaps you have some plants to spare? We
received some very kind donations, but we
would love some more. If you can split your
strawberries, raspberry
canes or indeed if you
have any peas, beans,
carrots, exciting edibles
or pollinator friendly
plants to spare please
ROGIET METHODIST CHURCH
CELEBRATES 80 YEARS
This year we celebrate 80 years of worship and
fellowship in the village. The church (or chapel)
was built in 1933 by Shepard Bros builders of
Portskewett. Before this time in 1930-31, the
services were held in the Great Western Railway
Staff Association Buildings located on the
approach road to the Severn Tunnel Junction
Station. They allowed the founder members and
their families to use this building for their
services on a Sunday afternoon giving them also
permission to use the piano, chairs and all the
facilities.
During this time a plot of land became available
at Ifton Road and so it was decided to purchase
this land to build a new Methodist Church. The
founder members worked very hard to get this
mission fulfilled for the people of Rogiet as the
only other form of religious worship was at St
Mary’s Rogiet. The Methodist Church was
established through the support of the Great
Western Railway employees at the Severn
Tunnel Depot where they bought the bricks at
6D (sixpence) each. Drivers, shunters, foremen
and porters all supported this venture including
their families and other people in the village,
friendships were formed at the services and
membership increased.
Mrs Hutchings, a local preacher was the leader
of the founders members group and her
husband, Mr J Hutchings a driver at the Severn
Tunnel Depot was the treasurer. When the
church was first built its title was ‘Ifton
Methodist Church’ in the ‘Parish of Ifton at
Rogiet’, but in later years it became ‘Rogiet
Methodist Church’. The pulpit was given by the
‘Local Preachers of the Wye Valley Mission.’
Many other donations were given to help make
the church, and its interior, what it is today.
On the 8th September 2013 we will celebrating
our 80th Anniversary with a ‘Songs of Praise’ at
4pm and our usual service at 10.30 am, you are
welcome to come and join us.
