Hosts. Species <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lepraria neglecta-group, including L. caesioalba,<br />

L. neglecta <strong>and</strong> L. cacuminum (Kiimmerling et al. 1993).<br />

Distribution. Austria, France, Great Britain, Norway, Portugal, Russia,<br />

Slovakia, Sweden, Greenl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA (Kiimmerling et al. 1993).<br />

Observations. The ascospores in this species are biguttulate.<br />

Rhymbocarpus insignis ascomatibus erumpentibus, atris, primo clausis, demum applanatis,<br />

100-250 um, disco exposito, margine prominenti, interdum pubescenti, ascosporis anguste<br />

ellipsoideis ad fusiformibus vel bacilliformibus, 0-1-septatis, 10-15 x 2-3-5 |im.<br />

Typus: Sweden, Torne Lappmark, <strong>the</strong> Tornetrask Area, Abisko, Paddos, alt. c. 630 m, on open<br />

calcareous rocks, on Penusaria panyrga, 29 August 1959, Santesson 13473 a (UPS—holotypus; hb.<br />

Diederich—isotypus).<br />

Ascomata aggregated, immersed to erumpent, broadly attached to <strong>the</strong><br />

substratum, black, initially ± closed, later applanate, disc exposed <strong>and</strong> margin<br />

prominent, 100-250 um diam.; margin, when old, entire or with several deep<br />

fissures, but thinner than in R. cruciatus <strong>and</strong> not appearing cruciate, not, or<br />

rarely entirely, covered by hairs. Exciple with a dark brown pigment, K — ,<br />

N -, mainly located in <strong>the</strong> outer layer, <strong>and</strong> a greenish pigment, K+<br />

olivaceous, N —, present in <strong>the</strong> whole exciple, but best visible in <strong>the</strong> inner<br />

layer, paraplectenchymatous, indistinctly prolonged in a stipe, laterally 35-<br />

45 um thick, composed <strong>of</strong> elongate cells <strong>of</strong> 7-12 x 4-6 um, basally c. 45 um<br />

thick, <strong>of</strong> isodiametric cells <strong>of</strong> 7-10 um diam., with cell walls strongly<br />

gelatinized; excipular hairs, when present, hyaline to dark brownish green,<br />

occasionally 1-2-septate, thin-walled, base not distinctly thickened, 13-<br />

35 x 2-3 um. Subhymenium hyaline, 10-20 um thick. Hymenium hyaline,<br />

55-65 um tall, KI - , with paraphyses easily separating. Epihymenium with a<br />

greenish pigment, K+ olivaceous, N — . Paraphyses septate, hyaline, c. 2 um<br />

thick, regularly branched, apically not or slightly thicker. Asci claviform to<br />

subcylindrical, 36-53 x 6-9 um, wall apically not thickened, KI - , 8-spored;<br />

ascogenous hyphae with croziers. Ascospores hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid to
