Pig Roast at Sportsmen’s Chalet
For the 16 th year, Gary and Laurel Frank of the Sportsmen’s Chalet hosted their annual pig roast fundraiser to benefit both the Bo-Boen and
New-Tom Snow Fleas Snowmobile Clubs on Saturday, August 25th serving 146 people! After 16 years of hosting this event they have donated
more than $100,000.00! Split-the-pot spins on the paddle wheel and drawings for special prizes were done in the afternoon. People were served
a delicious roast pig supper, and afterward, the ticket drawings were conducted, including the $100 ticket raffle. The funds raised from the
pig roast enabled Gary and Laurel to present a $3,040.00 check to our club. They would like to thank everyone who helped make the pig roast a
huge success. Also thank you to the people that made all of the desserts.
Thank you Gary & Laurel
As you can see there is a new name above. I have assumed
the role of membership chairman from Judy Pacanowski. She
has given such wonderful notes on how to do the tasks and I
can only hope to follow her example. Thanks so much for all of
your help.
Notes from the Secretary’s Desk
Where to begin…
Our club has truly been blessed to have so many people in
our little community who love snowmobiling! From our landowners
who give us permission to use their land for our trails to
business owners who support us thru monetary donations. We
wouldn’t have the club and trail system that we have if it
weren’t for the hard work of each and every one of us. Thank
you to all who give so much!
Our Snowmobile Safety Class will again be held in the Community
Center on December 27th & 28th. Registration is required.
Please see additional information on page 7 in the
newsletter.
Knocker’s Pizza Co. will again be hosting a Snowmobiler’s
Breakfast on Sunday, January 29th for the club! This event will
run in conjunction with the Women on Snow Weekend so come
by car or by sled… it’s a great time for all!
Trail Boss Report
Man, how the time keeps flying by towards winter. Our
new drag is in the barn ready to go. I have begun to contact
drivers to confirm our staff for this upcoming season. So far, I
have not been informed of any re-routes but surprises can
always happen at the last minute.....let's keep our fingers
crossed. Keep in mind our upcoming brushing day on Saturday,
October 20th. We meet at the groomer barn at 9:00 am
ready to work. A gathering that evening at 6 pm at Twilight
Bar & Grill for their famous chicken dinner will reward everyone
for their efforts . I would also like to announce that Steve
Soltwedel has agreed to take over as our sign coordinator for
the new season ahead. Thanks to Steve for stepping up and
taking this responsibility. I know he will do a GREAT JOB!
Hope your fall season has been enjoyable and healthy for
you and your family. We’ve had our first snow of the season
on September 18th, so it won’t be long now!
Happy Trails…
Who’s snow Prediction would you rather believe?
Will Winter Return with a Vengeance?
After a year of unprecedented warmth –
both during the winter and summer
months – the great debate over whether or
not Old Man Winter will return with a
vengeance is on.
Last winter was the fourth warmest for the contiguous 48 since
record keeping began in 1895, with 24 states experiencing belownormal
precipitation. In fact, California experienced its second
driest winter ever. In only 10 states—chiefly across the nation’s
midsection— was winter precipitation above normal.
The situation became critical this past spring and summer with
broiling hot temperatures across much of the country and the most
severe drought conditions the nation has seen in more than 50
years.
For the coming season, we’re predicting that winter will return to
some – but not all – areas. We think it will be a “winter of contraries,
as if Old Man Winter were cutting the country in half. The
eastern half of the country will see plenty of cold and snow. The
western half will experience relatively warm and dry condition. In
other words, as in the political arena, the climate this winter will
render us a nation divided.
We predict that real winter weather will return to areas from the
Great Lakes into the Northeast. Most eastern states – as far south
as the Gulf Coast – will see snowier than normal conditions and
cooler temperatures.
We are “red flagging” February 12–15 and March 20–23 for major
coastal storms along the Atlantic seaboard; storms bringing
strong winds and heavy precipitation.
But on the other side of the country, winter will continue its hiatus
for another year. The forecast for west of the Continental Divide –
the Pacific Northwest, desert Southwest, Pacific Coast – calls for
mild temperatures and below-normal precipitation.
For much of the drought-stricken prairie region, an average
amount of winter precipitation will bring long awaited relief.
Take a look at the map below to see what we’re predicting for
your region, and don’t forget to pick up a copy of the 2013 Farmers’
Almanac for a more detailed long range forecast.
Forecasters predict below-normal snowfall
this winter
Gary Porter
The lawns, street and sidewalk are mostly clear of snow in front of two
houses near Jacobus Park on Cedar St. in February, one year after 20 inches
of snowfall inundated the Milwaukee area. The 2012-'13 winter outlook includes
below-normal snowfall.
By Sharif Durhams of the Journal Sentinel
Aug. 15, 2012
The verdict is in: Milwaukee will have another relatively warm, relatively
low-snow winter.
That's the best guess released Wednesday as part of the 2012-'13
winter outlook by the forecasting service Accuweather. Jeff Craven, a
science operations officer at the National Weather Service in Sullivan,
said the forecast for the Midwest jibes with the predictions the weather
service has been making since last winter.
Craven and the Accuweather forecasters base their predictions on a
weak to moderate El Niño pattern that's expected this winter. El Niño
patterns aren't the only factor that can determine seasonal precipitation
and temperatures, but a break from a warmer and less snowy pattern
would be an exception to the rule.
"All things being equal, it looks like another subpar year for the crosscountry
skiers and snowmobilers," Craven said.
How Many Folks Visit Designated Wilderness?
HASLETT, MI, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012: There are many groups working in the United States attempting to designate
more Wilderness Areas or “Wilderness Study Areas.” If they are successful, we will have more land put aside in the
United States that is seldom, if ever, visited by outdoor recreationists. The Wilderness Act became law in 1964 and
defined Wilderness as “undeveloped federal land retaining its primeval character and influence. The natural forces
prevail without man’s interference in Wilderness. Man is a visitor who doesn’t remain and his works are substantially
unnoticeable.”
The main focus of Wilderness Management is perpetuation of its Wilderness Character. Wilderness is a place where
the natural forces prevail and fire is among those forces. The suppression of forest fires in the United States costs taxpayers
$2.5 Billion annually. Fires also pump as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in a few weeks as automobiles
and trucks do in an entire year.
Here is some information regarding Designated Wilderness within the United States:
The United States National Forest and Grasslands encompass approximately 193 million acres. Within these
units there are 439 Designated Wilderness units comprising approximately 37 million acres or 19.2% of the
US Forest System. These 439 Designated Wilderness units do not include millions of other acres designated
as Wilderness Study Areas or administratively managed as defacto Wilderness Areas.
The Wilderness Act prohibits commercial enterprises, structures, roads or motorized equipment (i.e.: snowmobiles,
ATV’s, chainsaws, bicycles, strollers, handcarts, etc.). Wilderness Visitation accounts for 3.3% of all
total US Forest Service Recreation visits. Recent Forest Service data indicates there were a total of 199.7
million recreation visits to the US Forests nationwide. In contrast, Designated Wilderness visits account for
only 6.6 million visits.
When interacting on Wilderness Designation issues, it is helpful to know that we presently have a lot of Designated
Wilderness in the US and very few people visit Designated Wilderness areas. For information on visitation and use in
our National Forests, you can visit the USFS web site: www.fs.fed.usda.gov .
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
9:30 A.M. EDT, September 19, 2012
ATTENTION
NON-RESIDENT
SNOWMOBILERS
Snowmobiles bearing Wisconsin registration are not required
to have a non-resident trail pass, even if the owner
is from out of state.
A two year Wisconsin registration is $30.00, compared to
two trail passes at $70.00 for two years. Almost two times
the money is generated with a two year registration as is
with two trail passes due to the formula used to transfer
gas tax revenue to the state snowmobile fund; the state
snowmobile fund is where the money comes from for
grooming and trail maintenance. By having Wisconsin registration
instead of a trail pass, you save $40.00 every two
years and contribute more money to the state fund.
It is perfectly legal to have Wisconsin registration on your
snowmobile in addition to your home state's registration.
You do not need a Wisconsin address; your home address
can be used for a Wisconsin registration. Once you have a
Wisconsin registration, it can be renewed online at the DNR
website. Wisconsin registration applications can be obtained
at any DNR office, at any dealer who sells snowmobiles
in Wisconsin, and at many dealers out of state near
the Wisconsin border.
