Pig Roast at Sportsmen’s Chalet<br />
For the 17 th year, Gary and Laurel Frank of the Sportsmen’s Chalet hosted their annual pig roast fundraiser to benefit both the <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en and<br />
New-Tom Snow Fleas <strong>Snowmobile</strong> <strong>Club</strong>s on Saturday, August 24th serving a 211 pound pig! Split-the-pot spins on the paddle wheel and drawings<br />
for special prizes were done in the afternoon. People were served a delicious roast pig supper, and afterward, the ticket drawings were conducted,<br />
including the $100 ticket raffle. The funds raised from the pig roast enabled Gary and Laurel to present a $4,275.00 check to our<br />
club. They would like to thank everyone who helped make the pig roast a huge success, including the <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong> Chamber of Commerce and the<br />
rustic Manor for advertising the pig roast on their sign board. They would also like to thank the people that made all of the desserts.<br />

We have had our first membership dinner and meeting of<br />
the season September 10th at the 19th Hole. We had approximately<br />
50 members attend with the meeting that followed.<br />
Thank you goes out to the entire staff at the 19th<br />
Hole who provided us with a great dinner.<br />
We had two fund raisers this year. The first at Sportsmen’s<br />
Chalet and the second at the New Twilight Bar and<br />
Grill. Again a huge thank you go out to both establishments<br />
that have helped raise money for our club throughout the<br />
years with many more to follow.<br />
The weather has started to get a little colder and the excitement<br />
for our next snowmobile season has started for<br />
many of us.<br />

With these chilly morning temperatures it<br />
means fall is in the air… and that means our<br />
favorite season is just around the corner.<br />
I would like to thank Sue Slominski who<br />
presented the club with a check for $500 at<br />
the dinner meeting this month from the Northwoods <strong>Snowmobile</strong><br />
Challenge Fundraiser. She and <strong>St</strong>eve Pulec have<br />
been very instrumental in raising funds for area clubs thru<br />
this fundraiser. Bars that participate in this fundraiser include:<br />
SLO’S PUB, THE NEW TWILIGHT BAR & GRILL, THUN-<br />
DERBIRD, SAYNER PUB and the SHAMROCK PUB & EATERY.<br />
Please continue to support those who support us!<br />
At a recent meeting I was made aware that some people<br />
were upset when they weren’t acknowledged when they<br />
volunteered to help the club. It is impossible to acknowledge<br />
every single person who does something for the club.<br />
My hope is that we help the club with our time and talents<br />
not to just see our name in the newsletter but because of<br />
our LOVE for snowmobiling and the <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en <strong>Snowmobile</strong><br />
<strong>Club</strong>. We wouldn’t be who we are without all of us, so with<br />
that said, I would like to thank all of our members for being<br />
who you are and remember our club began because someone<br />
volunteered!<br />
I have included an article written by Hazel Christensen<br />
which I found in the archives. It gives a little history on the<br />
club which was started in 1969.<br />

Trail <strong>Bo</strong>ss Report<br />
Well, <strong>October</strong> is here and that means BRUSHING! We will<br />
be out with our equipment to get the major stuff done ahead<br />
of the <strong>October</strong> 19th club brushing day. We will still have time<br />
after that for last minute work if needed. Meet at the groomer<br />
barn at 9:00 am for a fun day of clearing and chain sawing.<br />
This is a very important day in the process of getting our system<br />
ready for the season. We will have a social time that evening<br />
to help soothe any weary bones for those who helped<br />
out.<br />
I would like to send along a big "thank you" to Jerry Renner<br />
and Jim Kelsey at Woodland Auto for their generous donation<br />
of labor for work done on the club pick-up truck. We can always<br />
count on Woodland’s to do their best to keep our equipment<br />
in good shape. When you stop in, give them another<br />
"thank you". I would also like to send a BIG thank you to<br />
Dave & the guys at Walker Equipment who did some welding<br />
for us on our brushing equipment to help us get ready for trail<br />
brushing.<br />
We will be getting our driver staff lined up this month ahead<br />
of November driver meeting. I look forward to another great<br />
season with our crew of dedicated men. I hope you are as<br />
excited as I am about the prospects of good snow this<br />
year......the predictions ALL SOUND VERY PROMISING.<br />

Menu Choices: Prime Rib with baked potato and vegetable, or Two Skewers of Shrimp served on a bed of wild<br />
rice with vegetable or Almond Crusted Chicken Breast topped with asparagus and Buerre Blanc Sauce served<br />
on a bed of wild rice.<br />
Note: All dinners are $18 and include salad with choice of home-made French or Ranch dressing, rolls, coffee<br />
and dessert. Taxes and tips are included.<br />

Who are the Apple Dumplings? The Apple Dumpling Gang is a group of men (mostly retired, but a few are still<br />
working) who snowmobile together every Wednesday during the season. This is an informal group so there are no<br />
dues or duties. On Wednesdays they leave from the groomer barn at 9 AM sharp. All you have to do is show up.<br />
Coffee and socializing is usually available there starting at 8:15 AM. There is a contribution for each ride to<br />
cover the cost of the drinks and lunch for that day. The group also has a Kick-off dinner in November, a 3-day<br />
Overnighter Trip, a Potato Pancake Breakfast in February and a Brunch to end the season. Why not come ride<br />
with them?

Fall has arrived and the snow will soon be following. General membership renewals were sent out the first week of September.<br />
Thanks to Milt Klingsporn, Arlene Rieckenberg and Kay Schultz for helping me stuff those envelopes.<br />
I have begun sending in registrations to AWSC. I have registered over 100 applications so far and more arrive every day<br />
at the post office box for Ed to pick up. The map ad and landowner information has been forwarded to my desk. So<br />
those memberships applications should be sent to AWSC before by the end of September or the first week of <strong>October</strong>.<br />
For the new snowmobile season we have 12 new members and 95 renewed members. This gives us a total of 107 members<br />
for the new season. Thirteen of those are secondary members. So the tallying begins. Keep sending in your renewal<br />
forms!<br />

Wisconsin...ride <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en Country!<br />
Wisconsin law requires those who use Wisconsin snowmobile<br />
trails to display either Wisconsin registration or a snowmobile<br />
trail pass. Funds from this program will be designated<br />
for use as trail aids and related costs to enhance all<br />
Wisconsin snowmobile recreation.<br />
The trail pass may be purchased over the counter at many<br />
authorized sales locations or by calling WDNR at 1-888-<br />
WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463)<br />
The $35.00 non-resident snowmobile trail use pass is valid<br />
from July 1st through June 30th.<br />
A snowmobile trail pass is required to operate a snowmobile<br />
not currently registered in Wisconsin on a snowmobile<br />
trail. The snowmobile must be currently registered with<br />
another jurisdiction. The trail pass must be permanently<br />
affixed by its own adhesive to the bottom center portion of<br />
the snowmobile windshield. If there is no windshield, the<br />
sticker shall be displayed in a highly visible location on the<br />
front of the cowling of the snowmobile. Once affixed, the<br />
sticker may not be removed or transferred to another snowmobile.<br />
<strong>Snowmobile</strong> Safety<br />
Education Class<br />
December 27 & 28, <strong>2013</strong><br />
Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after<br />
January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must<br />
have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate<br />
in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The<br />
certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile,<br />
and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand.<br />
<strong>Snowmobile</strong> Safety Education Classes are offered in the fall<br />
and early winter, and should start appearing on the DNR’s<br />
web site within the next month or so.<br />
All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer<br />
ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational<br />
Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Germain</strong> Sport Marine during business hours or by calling 1-<br />
888-936-7463 between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a<br />
Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled<br />
hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations<br />
go to www.dnr.wi.gov and click on the “Contact US” tab<br />
located at the top.<br />
The <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en <strong>Snowmobile</strong> <strong>Club</strong>’s <strong>Snowmobile</strong> Safety Education<br />
Class will be held on Friday and Saturday, December<br />
27 & 28, <strong>2013</strong>. Anyone 11-1/2 years of age or older is eligible<br />
to take the class and receive a safety education certificate;<br />
however, the certificate does not become valid until<br />
the child reaches 12 years of age. Pre-registration is required<br />
by calling Peggy Ausloos at (715) 542-3548.<br />
If you can donate a couple of hours of your time to help<br />
with registration, cookies or bars, grading of tests or helping<br />
outside with the machine test, please call Peggy Ausloos at<br />

Annual <strong>Club</strong> Raffle<br />
Again this season we will be running<br />
our club cash raffle. There will be four<br />
raffle tickets sent with your membership<br />
renewal form. The tickets are $5 each with a<br />
maximum of 2,000 tickets sold. First prize is $2,500,<br />
second prize is $1,500, third prize is $500 and fourth<br />
and fifth place prize is $250 each. The drawing will take<br />
place at our dinner meeting on March 13, 2014.

Ah (Yes, I remember it Well)<br />
<strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en Tribe History Bits<br />
by Hazel Christensen, an interview with Art and Luella Sherren<br />
Back in 1969, winters in the north woods were very quiet. For the most part; tourists left after Labor<br />
Day and didn't return until June with the exception of a few downhill skiers. Lofty Pines, owned and operated<br />
by Luella and Art Sherren and Pride of the North, run by Colleen and Cecil Ray were the only resorts<br />
that were winterized. It was this year that the <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en <strong>Snowmobile</strong> <strong>Club</strong> was formed with the purpose being<br />
to build trails that would encourage snowmobiling and increase tourism during the winter. There are<br />
several stories about how the name <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en originated but we have been told it is an Indian word meaning<br />
"Winter Fun".<br />
Due to lack of funds, volunteers did ALL of the work and ALL materials were donated. Chuck Vogel<br />
and Don Schulpius, being in construction, volunteered the use of their equipment. Bill and Katie <strong>Bo</strong>rke from<br />
Heart of the Woods, loaned out their tractor and on its return, the worker was always offered a hot bowl of<br />
soup or a supper. Anyone who had useable equipment helped out.<br />
The Lions purchased the first drag for the club built by a chiropractor in Rhinelander for he sum of<br />
$200. However, since all the Lions were not into snowmobiling, the club paid them back a year later. By this<br />
time the club had grown and dues were being collected. The club purchased the "Alpine" which was a twin<br />
track, single ski tractor used to pull the drag.<br />
The groomers went out in pairs. Art Sherren and Bruce Weber were partners. Art drove the Alpine<br />
and Bruce road behind the drag. When they came to a stop or sharp curve, Bruce lifted the end of the drag<br />
to remove the several inches of snow that had accumulated. One night they were grooming in a blizzard.<br />
They arrived in Sayner and decided to leave the equipment with the Barnstormers. Don Schulpius was so<br />
upset about leaving their precious equipment he went back and along with a few others drove it back in<br />
the blinding snowstorm. Since there was no groomer barn it was housed in Roy Schulpius's garage on Pickerel<br />
Lake. The second piece of equipment purchased was a <strong>Bo</strong>mbardier tractor SV 200. The club paid for it<br />
on the "Snow Plan", better known today as Time Payment.<br />
Every club had their own little secrets. Walter Mayo, county forester, worked with each group individually.<br />
When Tom Fegers replaced him, he insisted for the benefit of snowmobiling that all the clubs<br />
should work together. We now have the County Alliances, Vilas and Oneida, meeting once a month to discuss<br />
the challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed by the clubs.<br />
In the early 70's a committee was formed to investigate the possibility of building a groomer. They<br />
located a company called Maxey from Fort Collins, Colorado, who built drags for ski hills. They came to <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Germain</strong>, looked over the trails and offered to build one for $3,500. Loren Maxey named it the "Wisconsin<br />
Special".<br />
The club was growing and money was needed, Many resorts started winterizing some of their cottages<br />
and bars that had been closed for the duration of the winter now started staying open to accommodate<br />
snowmobilers. They came to be known as "Pit <strong>St</strong>ops". In an effort to raise money and encourage people<br />
to use the trails, the 100 and 500-mile patches were designed. Each Pit <strong>St</strong>op had a number. <strong>Snowmobile</strong>s<br />
carried cards and when they stopped at a Pit <strong>St</strong>op, the card was marked. When the card was filled,<br />
one was allowed to buy a patch. Following the patches came the pins, Don Schulpius designed the first pin,<br />
an Indian headdress with a small sled and <strong>Bo</strong>-<strong>Bo</strong>en underneath it. The sale of pins is still a big moneymaker.<br />
The charter members worked hard and volunteered much of their time but they were also a social<br />
group drawn together through the love of snowmobiling. The children rode along to picnics and cookouts at<br />
Lofty Pines, Musky Mountain and Crystal Lake. The men would work all day breaking a trail to Archdales<br />
or White <strong>St</strong>ag so they could take their wives to dinner in the evening. The trails were bumpy but well worth<br />
the ride. Since the sleds were not always dependable and couldn't be repaired on the trail, a back up vehicle<br />
usually went along.<br />
In the beginning, snowmobiling was not always accepted by many of the residents. Sleds were noisy<br />
and created a lot of pollution. It has taken improvements in sleds and trails, plus education to make snowmobiling<br />
the sport that it is today.
ANDERSON RETIRES<br />
Hall of Fame has new leader after 30 years<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong>, WI.......The <strong>Bo</strong>ard of Directors of the <strong>Snowmobile</strong> Hall<br />
of Fame and Museum (SHOF), held their annual summer meeting in<br />
the SHOF Ramstad Conference Room Saturday, August 10, <strong>2013</strong>. It<br />
was area resident Loren Anderson's last meeting as President of the<br />
non-profit organization, founded in Minocqua in 1981-82. Loren<br />
served as President for over 30 years. The SHOF has operated a<br />
HOF and museum for the last 21 years in <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong> and was in<br />
Eagle River and Minocqua for short periods as well. What began as<br />
a trail ride with C J Ramstad the publisher of several snowmobile<br />
magazines in the early 80's, ended up with Loren, local racer and<br />
businessman Mike Trapp and Larry <strong>Bo</strong>sacki of the famous <strong>Bo</strong>athouse,<br />
deciding they should start a HOF for the sport. It was one of<br />
those moments: "If not us, who. If not now when?" Thirty years<br />
later, some 100 inductees have been enshrined and the organization<br />
owns their own land and building on a beautiful wooded campus on<br />
Loren Anderson of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong> and formerly Minocqua,<br />
turns over the leadership of the Hall of Fame to<br />
Craig Marchbank of New Lenox, Ill, newly elected<br />
President of the <strong>Bo</strong>ard of Directors.<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong>'s west side on Hwy 70. The collection of sleds in the museum, is well respected throughout the world<br />
as one of the most prized and valuable collections in the sport. Loren retired from the organization as of the end of<br />
the board meeting having seen his dream come true. Said Loren: "I look forward to spending more time enjoying<br />
the Northwood's, traveling and especially being with my grandkids. You know they all have had their own sleds<br />
from age 5 on."<br />
Besides serving as leader of the SHOF, Loren managed a career in the building, land development, real estate and<br />
design field. He spent some 12 years racing Formula I sleds, owning a race team his son raced on and serving on<br />
snowmobile related boards and commissions. His long and busy career included a stint as Legislative Chair of the<br />
Wisconsin Builders Association and a director of the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, DC.<br />
Two of the Anderson firms buildings won national design awards from the ARA. Loren also worked for Gov. Tommy<br />
Thompson as an administrator in the Dept of Commerce for 4 years and later at <strong>St</strong>ate Fair Park on the board and<br />
as race director, where he is one of the people credited for saving racing at the Park and keeping the famous Milwaukee<br />
Mile alive, bringing back NASCAR and Indy Car racing. During these years he also managed to serve as<br />
presidents of the Lake Geneva, Minocqua and <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Germain</strong> Chambers. He was a founding member and chairman of<br />
the Faith Ev. Free Church in Minocqua. Loren's wife Carola worked along his side for over 20 years helping as volunteer<br />
and office worker. Until two years ago, the SHOF had no paid employees as all work has been done by volunteers<br />
like the Andersons.<br />
The SHOF board had a work day prior to the meeting as they moved some 30 sleds around and made ready for a<br />
new and spectacular display of speed sleds including the 3 famous and historical <strong>Bo</strong>ss Cats. The SHOF has over<br />
200 sleds available for display but only around 100 are on display at any one time. The <strong>Bo</strong>ard members come from<br />
as far as Massachusetts, North Carolina, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and of course Wisconsin.<br />
Craig Marchbank of New Lennox, IL and Tomahawk, WI was elected to serve as new president of the <strong>Bo</strong>ard. Craig<br />
has been a life-long sled head and was the longest serving factory driver for Ski-Doo drag racing efforts, having just<br />
retired a few years ago with the most Ski-Doo wins in history. He also has an extensive vintage sled collection.<br />
Craig is a paving contractor. Tom Otte, of Randolph, MN was elected to fill the remaining term as VP as Jon Carlson,<br />
of Mooresville, NC has retired from the board as well. Tom is a seed farmer and vintage collector, featuring<br />
John Deere sleds. Tom had been a factory racer for Deere in the 70s.<br />
Craig said; "He looks forward to serving and helping the SHOF as it enters its next thirty years, preserving the history<br />
and honoring the heroes of the sport." Craig reminds everyone that the raffles have started for a beautiful<br />
