Special cranes
Success trough innovation
Künz is the European market leader in the container
crane segment. One of the decisive factors in the company’s
success is the capacity for innovation it has
developed over many years. This capacity for innovation
is particularly required in the special crane segment,
in which effective and innovative solutions are required.
In order to do justice to the outstanding achievements
of Künz co-workers in this area, which is less familiar
to our customers, this issue is devoted to the subject
of special cranes. Künz recently delivered a special
crane to Rhomberg Bau, a construction company with
its headquarters in Vorarlberg in Austria; this crane is
designed for laying pre-assembled rail tracks 18 metres
in length and is to be used in the Lötschberg Tunnel in
Switzerland. And a gantry crane with a lifting capacity of
2 x 80 tonnes and a width of 14 metres was delivered in
December 2002 to the AGN company for erection work
in the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
Internationally, Künz is a specialist in fully automatic
electrolysis cranes. Two special cranes for zinc electrolysis
are currently being commissioned for Hindustan Zinc Ltd
in India. The cranes have a lifting capacity of 11.5 tonnes
and a width of 14.56 metres. Two 2 x 10 t gantry cranes
have also been delivered to Chuciquamata in Chile.
Lötschberg Tunnel / Switzerland
At the end of the 2003, the construction company RHOMBERG BAU AG contacted our company. Rhomberg required
a machine for the construction of the Lötschberg Tunnel in Switzerland that fulfilled the following requirements:
transport of prefabricated rail tracks 18 metres in
length
transport of filled concrete mixer drums
very high alignment accuracy for track installation
while at the same maintaining high terminal velocity
very high operational availability
independent power supply
control via radio and on-board control position
compensation for variable crane rail elevations on
both sides of the crane track
Michael Geiger
Working closely with the customer, KÜNZ developed a
crane that meets these requirements. The crane consists
essentially of two gantries connected to each other by a
clasp. It is powered by a diesel unit mounted on the
gantry. The four hoists can be operated individually and
together. The drive mechanisms are located on the gantry
and can be telescoped hydraulically. The crane is currently
being tested on RHOMBERG’s premises.
Chuciquamata in Chile
Storage yard crane for copper electrolysis
Technical data – Gantry crane
Lifting capacity: 2 x 10 tonnes
Auxiliary hoist: 5 tonnes
Track gauge: 16/7 metres
Lifting/lowering: 0-25 metres/min
Crane drive mechanism: 0-135 metres/min
Crane trolley: 0-50 metres/min
Following the modernisation and extension of one of the world’s largest copper electrolysis plants at Chuciquamata
in Chile, Coldelco ordered two gantry cranes for the loading of anodes and cathodes. Cathodes, anodes and tray
containers are handled by the cranes.
The challenge in designing this crane was to combine 3 functions in one grab with the smallest possible external
dimensions. The trolley is equipped with slewing gear that enables +/- 90º positioning of the load. The crane cabin
can travel freely along the main beam. In addition, the crane operator can monitor the picking up and lowering of
loads by means of cameras.
Fully automatic electrolysis tank house cranes
Technical data – Tank house crane
Lifting capacity: 11.5 tonnes
Auxiliary hoist: 1.5 tonnes
Track gauge: 14.56 metres
Lifting/lowering: 0-18 metres/min
Crane travel: 0-100 metres/min
The cranes were delivered in April 2004.
Assembly was undertaken by a Künz supervisor.
Künz cranes are used throughout the world. Two special cranes for a new zinc electrolysis plant are currently being
commissioned for Hindustan Zinc Ltd. in India. The crane is used for the fully automatic manipulation of cathodes
and anodes in the electrolysis cells with an alignment accuracy of +/-2 mm.
