GREEN PASSPORT FOR NEW RORO VESSEL
One of the world’s largest,
most environmentally
adapted car and truck carrying
ships, the M/V Aniara,
has been christened at
an official ceremony in
Bremerhaven, Germany.
in the trAditionAl naming ceremony,
Josiane Marie-Noëlle Liebherr, wife of
Dr. Willi Liebherr, CEO and president of
the Liebherr Group, a key WWL customer
since the early Eighties, named and
blessed the ship.
The M/V Aniara will replace an older
and smaller vessel in the WWL Round the
World service, offering an even more reliable
service and increased capacity for high
and heavy RoRo and NCC cargo. Comment-
ing on the latest edition to its fleet, WWL’s
CEO Arild Iversen says: “The introduction
of the M/V Aniara demonstrates our commitment
to addressing a global demand
for RoRo tonnage and gives our customers
added flexibility in the types of cargoes
they ship with us, while reducing our
impact on the environment.”
the neW Vessel can carry up to 8,000 cars
or a combination of 3,486 cars and 466
trucks/buses. It is one of the most flexible
and versatile RoRo vessels afloat today
with its reinforced and moveable vehicle
decks and an extra wide (9.5 metres) and
strong 320-tonne capacity stern ramp.
The maximum deck height is raised to
6.5 metres.
The new Large Car and Truck Carrier
(LCTC) vessel utilises world-class
environmental design elements which
will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15
percent per transported unit, as well as
reducing emissions of SOx and Particulate
Matters. The M/V Aniara also has a
Pure Ballast system installed, in order to
minimise transfer of micro-organisms
between eco-systems through ballast water
without using chemicals. In addition,
the M/V Aniara has been awarded a Green

the international maritime organization’s
guidelines on ship recycling were introduced
in 2003 to improve standards of safety
and reduce environmental pollution resulting
from the scrapping of ships. the guidelines
introduced the concept of the green
Passport, which is essentially an inventory of
materials present in a ship’s structure, systems
and equipment that may be hazardous
to health or the environment.
