AIR EMISSIONS
The Mark V model has been subjected to
extensive tank testing (see fact box) to find
a hull design which will enable it to achieve
optimum fuel efficiency. It is also estimated
that the turbine generator system will
cut CO2 emissions. Together, those two
elements of the ship design will reduce the
emission to air per cargo unit by 10-15%.

ATTENTION TO
WATER TREATMENT
Mark V vessels will be fitted with first
class water ballast treatment systems to
stop any harmful transfer of micro-organisms
between ecosystems. Specifically,
such systems ensure that when a
vessel picks up water at a particular point
for ship stability purposes, the organisms
which that water contains do not affect
biodiversity by being deposited in other
areas along the vessel’s route. The ships
will also have first class, 5ppm (parts per
million), bilge water treatment systems
and biodegradable stern tube oil.

the tank testing for the mark V vessels
included some non-standard elements, specifically
model tests in waves and more than
one round of testing. the latter is unusual
for ships tailor-made in small numbers to
an owner’s specification. However, WWL
believes it is the only way to make use of
things learnt through the model testing
process.
