The Mark V model has been subjected to<br />
extensive tank testing (see fact box) to find<br />
a hull design which will enable it to achieve<br />
optimum fuel efficiency. It is also estimated<br />
that <strong>the</strong> turbine generator system will<br />
cut CO2 emissions. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, those two<br />
elements of <strong>the</strong> ship design will reduce <strong>the</strong><br />
emission to air per cargo unit by 10-15%.<br />

WATER TREATMENT<br />
Mark V vessels will be fitted with first<br />
class water ballast treatment systems to<br />
stop any harmful transfer of micro-organisms<br />
between ecosystems. Specifically,<br />
such systems ensure that when a<br />
vessel picks up water at a particular point<br />
<strong>for</strong> ship stability purposes, <strong>the</strong> organisms<br />
which that water contains do not affect<br />
biodiversity by being deposited in o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
areas along <strong>the</strong> vessel’s route. The ships<br />
will also have first class, 5ppm (parts per<br />
million), bilge water treatment systems<br />
and biodegradable stern tube oil.<br />

THOROUGH TESTING<br />
<strong>the</strong> tank testing <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> mark V vessels<br />
included some non-standard elements, specifically<br />
model tests in waves and more than<br />
one round of testing. <strong>the</strong> latter is unusual<br />
<strong>for</strong> ships tailor-made in small numbers to<br />
an owner’s specification. However, WWL<br />
believes it is <strong>the</strong> only way to make use of<br />
things learnt through <strong>the</strong> model testing<br />
process.<br />
