I wondered how on earth any human being<br />

could stay in such a place with such truly<br />

contemptuous people for a single moment<br />

longer than was absolutely compulsory. This<br />

is, of course, an extreme case, and wiser<br />

counsels and more Christian wisdom now<br />

prevail. Fallen women are given a far<br />

better chance than they used to be given even<br />

ten years ago, and many of the rescue homes<br />

are quite charming places. But how are these<br />

poor women to know this ?<br />

Then, of course, there is that dreadful habit<br />

of preaching to them. What a wonderful<br />

amount of good could be done, and how<br />

much more moral and social reform could<br />

be achieved, if we could only get people to<br />

work among<br />

those who need our service so<br />

much, without preaching to them !<br />

It is<br />

very difficult for such women to step suddenly<br />

from their free-and-easy life to a dis-<br />

ciplined existence where they are compelled<br />

to give an hour at least, morning and evening,<br />

to listen, perhaps, to some dreary discourses.<br />

These are, indeed, difficulties in the way of<br />

helping what are called " fallen " women a<br />

word I dislike immensely to a better life,<br />

when one can only offer them that sort of<br />

existence. If we could but believe that by<br />

kindness and tenderness and a holy liberty we<br />

would do more for them than by preaching at<br />

them and compelling them to attend services,<br />

our minds to<br />
