thus were women first brought within the<br />

pale and protection of the Church and of<br />

Christianity, when the Church had been in<br />

existence scarcely one decade. The women<br />

Deaconesses thus created became pious souls<br />

who ministered to the poor, the sick, and<br />

the lonely, their noble Samaritan work commencing<br />

in Jerusalem, extending afterwards<br />

under the direction of the first great woman<br />

of the Order Tabitha, the rich widow<br />

throughout Asia, and penetrating even within<br />

the palace walls of Rome.<br />

But alas for the efforts of the Divine Master<br />

and the efforts of His followers in those days,<br />

when Christianity was "an association in<br />

charity of the poor," little has since been<br />

accomplished in raising the status of women<br />

in Asia, even at the present day. At the<br />

moment of writing these lines native raiders,<br />

traders in girls' flesh, and procurers are<br />

busy scouring Upper Egypt, Arabia, the<br />

small islands washed by the JEgean Sea, and<br />

Greece scouring and ravishing and herding<br />

together young, innocent, and totally ignorant<br />

girls to maintain the supply of human flesh<br />

to meet the fearful demand that exists in<br />

houses of ill-fame in Cairo, Alexandria, Port<br />

Said, and minor seaport towns in the Near<br />

East.<br />

Most of these abominable raiders and<br />

traders are half Egyptian, half Arabian ;<br />

some are half Turk, half Arabian. Their<br />

helpless victims are taken in consignments to<br />

the horrible sacrifice. Generally they are
