THE PLAGUE IN EGYPT<br />

MR. WILLIS, writing of this trade in Egypt,<br />

says :<br />

The plague of the " pimp " and his co-<br />

partner, the procuress, in Egypt is bad enough,<br />

in all conscience, but, from a European stand-<br />

point, it does not assume the awful seriousness<br />

of the aspect of the traffic in the Middle<br />

East and the Far East as regards the literal<br />

slaughter of white women and girls. Egypt<br />

is comparatively close at hand, and is, so to<br />

speak, under stricter observation than the<br />

Middle East or Ear East. Unfortunate white<br />

girls decoyed to Egypt have some chance of<br />

escaping the hellish bonds of the "pimp,"<br />

or those who conduct houses of ill-fame, but<br />

in the Middle East and Ear East such opportunities<br />

do not exist. The strong, vigilant<br />

societies established in England give special<br />

attention to the cities of Alexandria, Cairo,<br />

Port Said, etc. On the active committees<br />

of such societies we find the Earl of Aberdeen<br />

and his philanthropic Countess, Mrs. Eawcett,<br />

and other enthusiastic workers who are not
