Means of transport Pirogues are fitted with off-board motors. They are made locally, from wood, and adapted to navigate through rapids. They measure on average 12 to 14 m and can take 8 to 14 passengers. They are driven by crews of Noirs-Marrons, river men who are expertly skilled in manoeuvring. The crews, made up of a driver and a “takariste” will safely guide you through the river’s hazards. Average navigation time During a circuit that lasts several days, daily navigation time is around 5 or 6 hours. A license is not necessary to navigate on the rivers in French Guiana. Ask for information from the receptive travel agencies in Cayenne or Kourou concerning river travel.
