While it’s true that French Guiana is little
known by the general public, for
connoisseurs it remains a mythical
destination. The ambition of the French
Guiana Tourist Board is to promote it and
encourage its discovery, hoping that visitors
will ultimately fall in love with it. We aim
to do this by extending our passion to
different tourism-related professionals:
• Tour operators.
• Travel agencies catering for groups,
individuals and offering incentive trips.
• Tourist press.
CTG’s goal is to inform professionals,
but above all to train them to promote
French Guiana.

Just before they land at Cayenne-Rochambeau, as they glimpse the vast green rainforest,
the word that will spring to your customers’ minds will be: unbelievable. Here they are,
in French Guiana, between Brazil and Suriname, ready to set out on an unforgettable trip.
When they tell the people back home of their escapades through the heart of the jungle,
their encounters with indigenous people, the carnival or the Ariane rocket taking off,
nobody will believe them.
French Guiana has 84,000 km2 of rainforest, and over 5,000 plant and animal species.
It’s a fascinating world in which to venture and stay in absolute safety. French Guiana is
a mosaic of peoples and cultures that live in harmony: Creoles, French mainlanders,
Amerindians, Noirs-Marrons, Chinese, Laotians, etc. French Guiana also represents
science with the Space Centre in Kourou, and euphoria with its carnival that is famed

1. Diversity
Like a kaleidoscope, the colourful contrasts of French
Guiana unfurl to reveal a people-focused style of tourism,
enabling each person to truly experience the best:
• Visit the Space Centre and watch, in real life, a rocket
being launched. Enter into a world of technology as you
discover the base for Ariane, symbol of European space
conquest.
• Travel up the majestic rivers that flow through this
Amazonian landscape. You can only reach the rivers in
pirogue or by plane.
• Immerse yourself in history on the Îles du Salut, where the
ruins of a prison bear witness to decades of sufferance.
• Meet local people, a fascinating mix of race and
colour (black, Mulatto, white, Asian), and indigenous
populations (Amerindians and Noirs-Marrons) who
perpetuate ancestral ways of life.
4. Climate
It’s hot, but bearable, in French
Guiana, with an antitrade wind
blowing constantly on the coast.
Because of the stability of the
equatorial climate, there are never
any cyclones in Guiana.
Best period: July to March.
6. Safety
As a French Overseas Department, French
Guiana has a stable political environment,
and an identical medical system to that in
France, making it one of the safest regions
in South America.
Sales arguments
French Guiana is a new and original destination. At first sight, everything
is green in this country of rivers and forests. The vast rainforest reveals
its unique nature and the mysterious charm of untouched places.
Adventure is part of the magic too. The French Amazon offers everything
that the Great Amazon has to offer: new experiences are guaranteed
in this paradise of ecotourism.

2. Nature
French Guiana has an immeasurable
natural heritage: 8 million hectares
of virgin forest, over half of which is
protected. 1,300 types of trees,
190 species of mammals, no less
than 700 species of birds… this
precious gem is waiting to be
discovered, and respected for its
biodiversity.
3. Events
The carnival in January and February is one
of the most deep-rooted Guianese traditions.
A particularity of this carnival is the presence of
touloulous, women dressed up to the point of
being unrecognisable, who invite one man
and then the next to dance with them. They
lead the dance, breaking down all social
barriers and conventions. Other festivals
depend on the different communities that populate Guiana, such
as the Hmong and Chinese New Year celebrations.
5. Proximity
Air France has seven direct flights per week from
Orly Ouest to Rochambeau, 17 km from Cayenne.
The flight lasts 8 and a half hours.
Air Caraïbes also flies to French Guiana via the French
West Indies - 11 hour flight.
7. A referenced destination
Generalist or specialist T.O.s already include the
destination among their products. Once on site,
experienced professionals are on hand to help you
discover the country in the most comfortable conditions
possible (air conditioned coaches, competent
guides). Almost 803 of the 1,002 hotel rooms are in
3-star accommodation in hotel chains (Accor, Best
Western, Logis de France).

A bit of history
Vincent Pinson discovered French Guiana in January 1500. Later, in 1624, colonisation began
in what is currently Cayenne.
The 17 th century saw the French, English and Dutch successively colonise the area, each one
motivated by the same desire: to find Eldorado.
The French settled down definitively in French Guiana at the end of the 18 th century after
attempts to populate the zone, the most well known being the Kourou expedition in 1763.
However, the Europeans’ inability to adapt to working in a tropical environment and the
impossibility to enslave the Amerindians led to the introduction of slavery in the colony.
The black populations refused enslavement in 1848. Later, during the second half of the
19 th century, gold and prison were the main “activities” in French Guiana. On 14 th March 1946,
French Guiana became a French Department.
In the 60s, thanks to the installation of a space launch centre in Kourou, French Guiana
opened up to new activities. history

French territory in the Amazon
Around 7,000 km separate French Guiana from the French mainland,
or eight and a half hours by plane. Situated in the north-east of the
South American continent, French Guiana occupies 84,000 km 2 (1/5 th )
between Suriname and Brazil. On the west, its natural border is the
Maroni river, on the east the Oyapock river, and in the south the
Tumac-Humac mountains. 350 km of coastline border the Atlantic
Ocean. Beyond that, the vast Amazonian rainforest begins, which can
only be discovered by the rivers and waterways that form a dense
hydrographical network.
Climate
French Guiana enjoys an equatorial climate: it’s hot, but bearable, especially as an antitrade wind
blows permanently on the coast. The average yearly temperature is 26°C, with the maximum
reaching 33°C.
For sun worshippers, the best months to visit are:
> mid July to end November: the great dry season,
> mid March to mid April: “March summer”.
For those that aren’t put off by a bit of rain (hot, with sunny spells):
> January and February: short rainy season, but also Carnival time,
> mid April to end June: rainy season (season when turtles lay eggs).
In short, any time of year is great for visiting, and you don’t need to worry about a cyclone
or earthquake, because there aren’t any here.

The incredible
Amazonian rainforest
With 90% of primary forest, French Guiana is home to one
of the last remaining primary tropical rainforests on earth.
Over 1,300 types of trees, 190 species of mammals and no less
than 700 species of birds form French Guiana’s immeasurable
natural heritage.
This precious gem, poorly known, sometimes feared, and in
more and more danger from man, is waiting to be discovered,
respectfully.
Although the fauna has a wealth and diversity of species, you
would be wrong to think it’s easy to see the animals in their
natural habitat. Monkeys, jaguars, deer, agoutis, parrots, etc,
can only be seen from the forest path with a lot of patience
and luck.
But imagine the joy for the photographer or nature lover when
such an encounter occurs!

The past
Rivers
Inhabited non-stop for thousands of years, French
Guiana still bears traces of the successive episodes
of its prehistory, its Amerindian archaeology and its
penal history.
On rocks on the Cayenne beaches or waterfalls, visitors
can spot thousands of polishing tools that were used
by Amerindians to form stone axes.
Close to the villages of Kaw, Rémire and Kourou
(Carapa), stone carvings of snakes, frogs or people are
the main representations of symbolic rock paintings.
The most spectacular historical ruins are the old Prison
buildings in Saint-Laurent and on the Îles du Salut,
opposite Kourou.
Don’t forget the famous Iracoubo church, the walls and
ceilings of which were painted by the prisoner Huguet.
All of these sites are easily accessible and guided tours
are available from the different organisations.

French Guiana is a land of rivers and these rivers form the country’s
borders; the Maroni in the west borders Suriname, and the Oyapock
in the east forms the border with Brazil. Seen from the sky, everything
is green (like a field of parsley, as some say). In vain, the gaze
searches a landmark. The rivers are the only liquid tracks that cut
a path through this green universe.

culture The incredible diversity of people
The population, 80% of which is urban, lives mostly on the
coast. The Amerindian populations (Galibis, Wayanas,
Emérillons, Palikours, Oyampis, etc.) still live in harmony with
the rivers, the sea and the forest.
The Creoles are the descendants of the different ethnics
groups (whites, colonies).
Small communities of black refugee slaves, called “Noirs-
Marrons”, or “Businengués”, often originating from the former
Dutch Guyana (Boshs, Alukus, Djukas, Saramakas,
Paramakas), have rebuilt their tribal structure on the banks of
the Maroni, upstream of the Amerindian villages.
The development of the Kourou space centre has seen the arrival of Europeans, the majority
of whom are from the French mainland, commonly known as “Métros”.
A large part of the population is made up of immigrants from neighbouring countries: Brazil,
Haiti, Suriname, Guyana or from more distant countries, such as Lebanon or Asian countries.

The incredible
space challenge
The choice of French Guiana for space activities is the result
of its favourable geographical location: close to the equator
(5° latitude north), ocean stretching at least 3,500 km from
Ariane
north to east, seismic and climatic stability (no hurricanes).
The Space Centre is devoted to operational launches of
Ariane 5, run by Arianespace.
It is possible to visit the Space Centre and travel to the heart of
this fantastic adventure, where you will rub shoulders with
technicians and staff working on the base.
You can even watch Ariane being launched from observation sites. The Space Museum gives
the public a general overview of space activity (its history, the techniques used, the future, etc.),
shows collections of objects and models to help the visitor understand how these systems work
and demonstrates the utility of space in our daily lives through different media (holorama,
lunorama and slideshow, temporary exhibitions).

Travel notes
Entry requirements: For French citizens, an identity card is enough. For European Union citizens:
a passport without visa and a return ticket.
Health: Vaccination against yellow fever compulsory, no matter how long
the stay, and anti-malaria treatment recommended if staying close
to inhabited rivers.
Language: French is the official language. Guianese Creole is the language
used to communicate between different ethnic groups. English is
understood.
Money: Money: the currency is the euro. Credit cards and cheques are
accepted in town (see boxed text below).
Cheques issued at banks outside of
French Guiana are accepted with
difficulty. You can, however, use
your credit card (Visa, Eurocard,
Mastercard, American Express),
either to withdraw cash or to pay
for your purchases, accommodation,
restaurants, car hire, but only
in the main urban centres. Travellers
Cheques are very useful.
Note
Time zone: G.M.T. -3 hours, so -4 hours with French mainland in winter, -5 hours in
summer, and -1 hour with Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Telephone: International automatic network. Ten number dialling:
05 94 + 6 digits. Use of mobile telephone possible with a World
formula. Be warned that in areas far from the coast mobile
telephones do not pick up.
Dialling: 06 94 + 6 digits.
• Power: the electrical current is 220 V.
• Water: tap water is drinkable on the
entire coastal area.
• Shop opening times: in general,
shops are open Monday to Friday,
from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from
4 pm to 7 pm. Grocery stores and
supermarkets stay open late in the
evening (9.30 pm) and are open on
Sunday from 9 am to 12.30 pm.
• Public holidays: identical to those in
metropolitan France, plus certain days
specific to French Guiana: 10 th June
(abolition of slavery), Jours Gras
(February or early March).
Useful information
Clothes: We recommend light cotton clothes, a swimsuit, sunglasses and sun cream.
For excursions, bring soft walking socks, a hat, a light raincoat, and a
sweat-shirt for nights in the forest, which can be cool.
Photos: The wonderful Guianese landscape will surely inspire you to take some
beautiful photos. Climate conditions are particular, that’s why we
recommend the following:
• store film in an air-conditioned environment,
• bring a waterproof or sealed case for pirogue excursions,
• use a lens hood or polarising filters.
Animal
regulations:
Importing live domestic animals is subject to regulations. Owners of cats
and dogs must hold a certificate attesting to the animal’s good health,
dating less than 15 days, and a valid vaccination certificate.

Phytosanitary Exporting of plants by individuals from French Guiana: imports into metropolitan France are authorised,
regulations: with no particular phytosanitary formalities, according to French decree of 22/11/2002, article 28, section
2: “small quantities of plants, plant products, foodstuffs or animal food, intended for private use or
to be consumed during transport (…)”.
Note that derogations do not apply in the following cases:
1 - Prohibited plants (notably and mainly citrus fruit plants)
2 - Risk of introducing harmful organisms
3 - Genetic material
4 - Protected species (regulations concerning wild flora and fauna)
Importations to Martinique and Guadeloupe are strictly forbidden by 2 decrees.

The road network (main roads and secondary roads) connects all the coastal communes (from
Cayenne to Saint-Laurent), as well as some inner communes (Roura, Régina and Saint-Georges).
In parallel, there are tracks that are accessible to all types of vehicle. It is, however, recommended

point. It is possible to eat at the Ile Royale lodge,

River links
Along with aeroplanes, rivers are the only way to explore
the interior of French Guiana.
Means of transport
Pirogues are fitted with off-board motors. They are made locally, from wood, and adapted to
navigate through rapids. They measure on average 12 to 14 m and can take 8 to 14 passengers.
They are driven by crews of Noirs-Marrons, river men who are expertly skilled in manoeuvring.
The crews, made up of a driver and a “takariste” will safely guide you through the river’s hazards.
Average navigation time
During a circuit that lasts several days, daily navigation time is around 5 or 6 hours. However,
depending on the weather (and the low water level), it may be shortened to enable you to
fish or swim.

Type: a tree-based carbet 10 metres off the
ground, offering sleeping facilities in hammocks.
Observation terrace 15 metres off the ground.
Access: in Kourou take the PK 21 Degrad Saramaka
road, then around 1 hour 45 of navigation in pirogue.
Site interests: easy climb up to the treetops,
from where you can discover the forest from an
observation platform 36 metres up.
Swing from one tree to another thanks to 2 zip
lines (70 to 100 metres).
On the ground, walk through the forest paths, or
go down the river rowing a traditional pirogue.

Floating carbet on low
Mana river
Type: a 120m 2 floating carbet on 2 levels on the
Mana river offering sleeping facilities in hammocks.
Access: 40 km from Saint-Laurent du Maroni by
road, then 45 min by pirogue to reach the carbet.
Site interests: the carbet is moored, providing a good
and comfortable base from which to discover the
low-lying forests. The upper floor is for sleeping
and offers an exceptional view of the nearby forest.
Several sign posted tracks allow for discovery of the
fauna and flora; daytime and night time outings.
Difficulty: none.
Cariacou tourist camp
Type: a group of traditional carbets with mezzanine
for carbets offering sleeping facilities in hammocks.
Access: one hour from Kourou (car and 25 min by
pirogue included).
Site interests: ideal for short breaks, the camp is situated
on the Cariacou creek, isolated from passing craft.
Canoe trips in a preserved forest. Tree acrobat

A tour encompassing all the launch sites. Visits are accompanied
with a guide in air-conditioned buses. Presentation of a piece of identity

site. Animals are not permitted. For safety reasons, there are no visits
between 1 and 10 days before the launch of Ariane. Depending on
operations on the base, tours and visiting times may be modified.

in the form of mezzanines. You can wander around freely, learning
about a different space activity at each step: the universe, the

the holorama, the lunorama and a slideshow to discover the European
space programmes, relive the magical moments of landing on the
moon, or an Ariane launch campaign. The museum also has a
planetarium, and a temporary exhibition area that provides latest

Nature sites
No one could imagine going to French Guiana
without seeing all the richness nature has to offer.
These are one of the big reasons the destination
is so original.
Kaw-Roura marshes
• 60 km from Cayenne.
• Bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the north, the river
Mahury in the south, a chain of woody hills (the Kaw
hills) on the west, and the river Approuague on the
east.
• This natural site is a vast green marshland covering
94,700 hectares, behind a large mud flat with
mangroves and swamp forest. The marshes are home
to the last remaining populations of South American
black caimans (protected species).
Thanks to the diversity of the wet environment, the
site proliferates with water birds.

egg-laying
The Amana nature reserve
• Awala Yalimapo (260 km from Cayenne).
• Situated between the Maroni and Mana estuaries,
the Hattes Beach is the biggest egg-laying site in
the world for the Luth turtle (measurements: 1 m 70,
600 kg, no scales, but covered in a dark blue
leather).
• Egg-laying season: April to July.
• Turtle hatching season: July to September.
Eggs are laid during the night, when the tide is high.
• The entirely protected site is accessible to all.
The Montjoly beach,
not far from Cayenne
• Luth turtles also come here to lay their eggs,
where a natural hatchery has been set up.
The Montjoly salt marshes
• Montjoly, on the Sainte-Rita road (9 km from Cayenne).
• The salt marshes form a 1,900 m-long lagoon on
the edge of the ocean. There is a 1.2 km discovery
trail along this wet zone.
The salt marshes offer a diversity of ecological
environments that you can easily identify along the
way: herbaceous vegetation, forest adapted to dryness
on the dune ridge, mangrove, etc.

Fourgassier Falls
• Accessible by car.
• 32 km from Cayenne.
Type: a series of small falls in a rocky outcrop.
Two trails run alongside the falls on each side of
the banks, and are joined by two footbridges over
the creek.
Site interests: close to Cayenne, ideal for relaxing
and bathing.

Voltaire Falls
• 80 km south of Saint-Laurent, where the coastal
plane and the highlands of the west meet.
Access: via a 65 km track and a 3.5 km signed
footpath. Depending on weather conditions,
contact the Saint-Laurent tourist office or police
to find out the road’s condition.
Time: 3 hours (2 hours by car and 1 hour’s walk).
Type: a series of medium-size falls.
Site interests: 2 carbets make it possible to stay
in the natural environment without any danger.

The Salvation islands

Ile Saint-Joseph,
seen from Ile Royale
Site interests: Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph and Devil’s
Island used to be the centres of the penal colony.
Today, you can visit the remains of the prison on Île
Royale. The Îles du Salut can be accessed by boat
or sailing boat.

In view of the distances, tourism in French Guiana
often involves a fair bit of travelling.
It’s a land of forests and rivers, and your discovery
trip will take you on a journey through rivers
(in pirogue), up in the air or on coastal roads.
The Maroni
Type: 520 km long, it’s the essential route for a
tourist trip on an inhabited Amazonian river.
Interests: the chance the meet local populations
(Businengués and Amerindians).
Accommodation is provided in carbets in villages
along the river’s path and meals are in the form
of bivouac.
On the Inini, 20 min by pirogue from Maripasoula,
Amazonia lodges (gîtes d’Amazonie) offer comfortable
accommodation in the natural environment.

Mana
Type: the wildest river in French Guiana, with rich
and luxuriant nature, totally uninhabited.
Interests: total immersion in an environment rich
in wildlife. Accommodation is provided in forest
carbets (simple wood structures supporting a
canvas sheet and with hammocks).
Throughout the river’s 430 km, travel up rapids
and discover some exceptional forest sites (learn
to identify plants, wildlife observation, initiation in
bivouac techniques).
The Basse Mana is also an exceptional place for
a 1 to 2 days trip to discover a varied forest, rich in
specific biotopes (Amana nature reserve).

The Approuage
Type: a river with few inhabitants, and powerful
rapids. It includes the largest falls in French
Guiana.
Interests: forest camps for gentle immersion into
the natural environment.

The Kaw marshes
Type: genuine Guianese everglades.
Access: 50 km via road from Roura.
Note that at the end of the road, the village is only
accessible by pirogue. The presence of a guide

Interests: this nature reserve is an exceptional
site for observing a variety of birds, and is also a
favourite place for caimans – possibility to lodge in
a carbet in the village.
Suggested excursions:
• 1 to 3 days, including a night.
Difficulty: none.
Other river circuits are possible, such as on the
Comté, Kourou, or Sinnamary. The Tapanahony
and the Inini, tributaries of the Maroni, are other
possibilities.
Type: Gabriel creek (small river), due to its route
through highly dense vegetation, is typical of
Amazon expanses.
Access: 22 km from Cayenne, in the direction
of Roura, situated in the Laotian village of Dacca.
Interests: Ideal for an initial contact with the river.
You can admire electric blue butterflies, called
Morphos.

The Rorota trail
on the Mahury plateau

Type: path in a loop.
Distance: 4 km.
Site interests: typical coastal forest, remarkable
viewpoints of the coast and its beaches, 3 lakes.
Time required: 2 hours 30 minutes.
Level of difficulty: easy.
The Molokoï trail of Cacao
64 km from Cayenne.
Type : the longest signposted trail in French
Guiana in mountainous territory. Two departure
points possible
(Village of Cacao or River Orapu).
Distance: 18 km.
Site interests: a hike for real nature lovers, to enjoy
at a slow and silent pace to observe the fauna and
flora. Half-way there is a carbet refuge on the
edge of a waterfall: ideal for a well-earned break.
Time required: from Cacao 3 to 5 hours + 4 to
6 hours the following day. From the river Orapu
(Auberge des orpailleurs) 5 to 6 hours + 3 to
5 hours the following day.
Level of difficulty: this trail is for experienced and
informed hikers.

A rocket over
the primary forest
French Guiana was a whirlwind of
emotions for us.
Some of us went on tiptoe, fearing
mud, insect bites and other dilemmas.
On the Îles du Salut, we were moved
by the contrast between past Hell and
Heaven today. In Kourou, the enormity
of the technology at the Space Centre
in the middle of the Amazon forest

Even if you’ve heard about it, this “green
sea” is impressive nonetheless, with its millions
of giant trees that stretch as far as the
capital, Cayenne, or in other words as far
as the ocean, and which covers almost
90% of the 84,000km 2 of French Guiana.
Incentive trips are a wonderful way of discovering
the primary forest, which is part
of the largest forest in the world, the
fauna, flora, and “carbets”, or Amazonstyle
lodges in the middle of the jungle
where memorable meetings can be
organised, the immense rivers and pirogue trips on their tributaries
through the undergrowth, night-time safaris on the upper
deck of small Mississippi style boats that wind their way through
the moonlit marshes, and the extraordinary experience of
turtles laying eggs on the Atlantic beaches.
French Guiana also offers the Îles du Salut, place of the former
prison. Today the place is so idyllic, who would believe it used to
impound prisoners? The warm blue sea, the palm trees that lean
into it, the mischievous monkeys that play hide and seek and the
charming house of the former governor – what more could you
want? Agencies organise treasure hunts here, which prove to be
very popular.
But the must is Kourou. With Ariane that goes up and up and up
into infinity, making the earth tremble within a 15 kilometre radius,
leaving behind a trace of white smoke as a souvenir.
It’s wonderful, extraordinary and stirring. After such a show,
a generous cocktail is essential for all united: the learned, of
course, the civil servants, the politicians, the customers who have
entrusted their satellite to the rocket, and also the incentive
groups, passing spectators and ordinary tourists. It’s a bit like a
village party. And what a party!

In Cayenne city centre, the consular building of
the French Guiana chamber of trade and industry
has 4 air-conditioned rooms that can receive
from 19 to 254 people.
Note that the chamber of trade and industry also
has a 20-place facility in Saint-Laurent du Maroni.
In Matoury (15 min from the international airport),
the Palais Régional Omnisport Georges Théolade
has a multi-purpose room that can hold up to
3,000 people.
In Rémire Montjoly (30 min from the international
airport), there are facilities in the town hall in
which to organise company activities. They can
hold from 30 to 233 people.
In Kourou, your customers can be received in the
Space Centre seminar rooms, which hold up to
200 people.

Gastronomy in French Guiana
400 years of a blend of cultures have made Guianese cuisine a rich and
original art. Creole gastronomy is the result of input from Europeans,
Africans, Indians, Amerindians, etc.
Spices
Nutmeg, ginger, peppers, cloves, cinnamon
and pepper. Once produced in French
Guiana, these spices are key elements in
local recipes.
Methods
“Blaff”: court-bouillon that draws its flavour from
onions, garlic, celery and basil.
“Pimentade”: sort of tomato flavoured courtbouillon.
“Rôti cougnade”: grilled fish.
“Colombo”: meat and vegetable based curry
stew. The fish-filled waters of French Guiana also
offer a huge variety of fish and shrimps – from the
small “sea-bob” shrimp to the giant shrimp – that
are prepared in a multitude of ways: marinades
(fritters), kebabs, etc.
Fricassees: specialities
of French Guiana cuisine
These stews can be made with white or red meat.
All of these dishes are served in generous portions
with rice, red kidney beans or couac (sort of roasted
manioc semolina).

Desserts
Creole pastries are made with cream or exotic
fruits. For example, the “œuf mulet” is a cream
turnover.
Sorbets come in multiple exotic
flavours, such as coconut,
peanut, bacaba palm, maracuja,
corossol, etc. So many new
flavours to try!
Other specialties
Smoked chicken or smoked fish: smoked chicken
or fish eaten cold in a salad.
Awara broth: the Awara is a palm tree whose
fruit pulp is used as a binder in a chicken or
smoked fish stew. This dish is served at Easter
and Pentecost.
It is a sign of welcome for important visitors.
You can also try Brazilian, Chinese and Javanese
cuisine in French Guiana.

Carnival
Carnival starts with the arrival of King Vaval, after Epiphany,
in the first week of January. He is always welcomed by a big
crowd. Costumes are ready, dances and music have been
perfected, and now French Guiana will enjoy two months
of partying.
The Touloulous
These disguised women are the “queens” of the
Guianese carnival. They get dressed up and wear
masks and change their voice when they speak:
they are unrecognisable. They will create mischief
at dances (Nana, Matado, Polina, etc.) on Saturday
night and will invite you to dance with them during
the parade through town on Sunday afternoon.
Everyone can take part in this strange, goodhumoured
cortege, where malicious, mysterious
and sometimes disturbing characters can be met:
“Jé Farinn, la Caroline, Anglé Bannan’, Neg
Marrons, etc.”
Carnival ends on Ash Wednesday after five days
of non-stop festivities.

The 10 commandments
of a Touloulou
1 - To avoid misinterpretation:
keep an eye out for beginner Touloulous.
2 - Dance and music shall protect the compulsory
anonymity of the Touloulou.
3 - A mask shall protect the compulsory anonymity
of the Touloulou.
4 - You shall respect the freedom of others in order
to be free to be yourself.
5 - The discretion and subtleness of your gestures
shall pay you tribute.
6 - Your attitude shall not turn the masked ball into
a brothel.
7 - Do not confuse these mystical venues with
nightclubs or hotel room.
8 - Be charming without being clingy. A Touloulou is
everywhere, sees everything, but must not latch on.
9 - Be desired, not hated.
10 - Good judgment will allow this unique custom
to continue until the end of time.

Communal festivals are cultural events that depend
on the community in question.
Practical advice
Saturday night Touloulous, follow carefully this
practical advice:
Before putting on your beautiful dress, underneath,
be sure to wear:
- coloured tights to hide your legs,
- trousers (for men) that must be bigger than
usual,
- a cotton tee-shirt to absorb perspiration,
- a loose, long-sleeved shirt (for men); the sleeves
must reach gloves.
• Put on your dress (Carnival outfit).
• If you are thin and want a bit more volume, you
can wear a small cushion (in front, behind and on
each hip) inside your trousers (to avoid losing the
cushions); this will distort your shape. If you don’t
have any cushions, use scarves or old clothes.
Men should wear belts, but don’t tighten them
too much!

• Wear a balaclava on your head or a madras
(a square madras folded into a rectangle at the
neck and then attach the two ends).
Wear:
- a wig that hides the mask’s elastic,
- a mask (to remain anonymous),
- a hat,
- long gloves that match the dress.

In French Guiana, like many countries with different
ethnic groups, the craft industry is very active.
The “Noirs-Marrons” river populations make
objects from sculpted wood: paddles, combs,
benches, tables, etc.
Pottery, bead work and wickerwork are the specialities
of the Amerindian populations: strainers,
fans, “pagara” baskets.
For the Hmongs, embroidery is their forte.
And then there’s gold of course! From the nugget
to traditional jewellery. And there are also objects
and furniture made from precious wood.
Jewellery shops and souvenir shops are concentrated
in the Lallouette, Jubelin and Général de
Gaulle streets. But you’ll find others along your
travels too.
