River-based tours
In view of the distances, tourism in French Guiana
often involves a fair bit of travelling.
It’s a land of forests and rivers, and your discovery
trip will take you on a journey through rivers
(in pirogue), up in the air or on coastal roads.
The Maroni
Type: 520 km long, it’s the essential route for a
tourist trip on an inhabited Amazonian river.
Interests: the chance the meet local populations
(Businengués and Amerindians).
Accommodation is provided in carbets in villages
along the river’s path and meals are in the form
of bivouac.
On the Inini, 20 min by pirogue from Maripasoula,
Amazonia lodges (gîtes d’Amazonie) offer comfortable
accommodation in the natural environment.
Suggested excursions:
• travel upriver in 5 days, travel back down in 4.
Difficulty: none.
Mana
Type: the wildest river in French Guiana, with rich
and luxuriant nature, totally uninhabited.
Interests: total immersion in an environment rich
in wildlife. Accommodation is provided in forest
carbets (simple wood structures supporting a
canvas sheet and with hammocks).
Throughout the river’s 430 km, travel up rapids
and discover some exceptional forest sites (learn
to identify plants, wildlife observation, initiation in
bivouac techniques).
The Basse Mana is also an exceptional place for
a 1 to 2 days trip to discover a varied forest, rich in
specific biotopes (Amana nature reserve).
Suggested excursions:
• 1 to 2 day circuit on the Basse Mana.
• From Mana or Saut Sabbat to Saut Fracas:
round trip in 6 days.
• 10 to 12 day complete Mana trip, on demand.
Difficulty: travelling up the river and its estuary at
Saut Fracas in 1 to 6 days is accessible to all; travelling
up the whole river is reserved for the more
athletic tourist who is not afraid to put in some
effort and who has a solid team spirit, because
the participation of each passenger is required to
tow the boat over falls.
