Fuquay-Varina turns out to ‘Shred It Days’
Melodie Estes
Correspondent
On Saturday, two “Shred-It Days”
were held. One was in Durham; the
second was held here at the Guardian
Angel parking lot. The Shred-It Company,
NBC-17 and the Fuquay-Varina
Chamber of Commerce can definitely
call this event a success, based on the
large number of participants, and the
massive volume of papers and documents
which were shredded to be recycled.
This was the first time that a
free shredding was done in Fuquay-
Varina.
There was a long line of cars at
the beginning of the day ready to unload
their cargo. More cars followed.
Those arriving late in the day left disappointed
that they didn’t have time
to go home and get their recyclable
papers, because they had missed
the notifications of the event. They
were, however given an email address
(alerts@ncdoj.gov) and a site (www.
ncdoj.gov) to inform them of the next
Shred-It Days.
On entering the parking lot, participants
were greeted by Chamber of
Commerce volunteers which included:
Joanne Hildago-Boyd, Lynanne Fowle,
Jeannette Ferrell and Melodie Estes,
directing them around the parking lot
to the line in front of five large white
trucks, equipped with shredders and
Shred-It employees to load the papers
into the shredders safely. Chamber
members Steve Tucker and Tommy
Broadwell, as well as Wes Hohenstein
from NBC-17 helped in unloading vehicles
and handing the recyclable papers
to the trained shredder employees.
Shuneca Harrington, the Local Sales
Manager for NBC-17 said the Shred-It
Day was started “in an effort to allow
viewers to shred and recycle papers
in a private and safe way.” There have
been other Shred-It Days, occurring
twice a year in other cities for the past
four-five years.
Robert Caviness, one of the Shred-
It employees was asked, “Are staples
left in the papers a problem when recycling
starts?” He answered that they
were not a problem because when
the shredded papers get to the plant
where they are processed, an electromagnet
pulls the staples out of the
shredded papers.
Thank you Shred-It, NBC-17 and
Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce
for making this day possible.
