8A – Fuquay-Varina Independent, Wednesday, October 12, 2011 Day in Downtown to feature several contests The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce’s 9th annual Day in Downtown street festival will again feature a number of family-oriented contests for all ages. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 on Main Street in Historic Downtown Fuquay. There will be three contests held this year that will be open to the public. They are: Costume Contest: Your children can show off their Halloween finery to those gathered at the festival. This contest is open to all children ages 14 and younger, with participants divided into three age groups with cash prizes in each. Children will model their costumes to the crowd while the judging is done. Registration for this contest will be the morning of the festival with the contest starting at noon. Pumpkin Carving Contest: Show how creative and scary you can get. Open to all ages, entrants must pre-register with the Chamber. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: scariest; funniest; and most creative. There will be a $25 prize awarded in each category. This contest is open to all nonprofessionals, with an original recipe. First place prize is $50 and second place is $25. Food vendors must have their health department pa- Cruise planned for 2012 About three months ago, at a Wake Up Fuquay-Varina networking breakfast at Golden Corral, Chamber Executive Director Tommy Broadwell asked the participants if they would be interested in doing something new and different in 2012—specifically, going on a trip together as a way of building camaraderie within the Chamber membership. Of course everyone raised their hands! Taking that response to heart, Tommy met with Dawn and Brian Dorr of CruiseOne, and put together a cruise package for September of 2012 that will rival anything available on the open market! As a result, the Fuquay-Varina Chamber is currently offering a cruise package for Sept. 9-16, 2012, departing from Port Canaveral in Florida, and visiting St. Martin, St. Thomas, and a privately-owned island in the Caribbean. The vessel is called the “Freedom of the Seas” and she is absolutely gorgeous! The inspiration for this project was an attempt to find unique and “out-of-the-box” ways to provide social and fellowship opportunities for our membership that promotes relationship-building over straight business networking. Just handing out a business card does not guarantee that people will remember a businessperson when their services are needed in the community. The best guarantee of generating REAL LEADS is by personal referral from people who really knows each other. You can have a pack of business cards from all kinds of networking events, but when someone needs a plumber, people are more inclined to recommend someone they’ve already done business with or gotten to know through a shared project or event than someone they just met at a networking function. Families are also an integral part of what we do, both in business and in civic involvement, yet businesspeople often attend Chamber events on their own without involving the rest of their family. Whether families just provide support from home, or actively volunteer or work in town as well, their support or lack thereof can have a significant impact on a person’s personal success. Taking them on a Chamber cruise can be a great way to thank them for their time and energy in the quest to make your work the best it can be. It can also be a great way for families to meet the people they hear about at the end of the day — people their loved ones work and volunteer with during work hours. Kelly Griffith Garner News Editor Readers of all ages can delight as local author Carol Crane visits David Anthony’s on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Crane wrote “T is for Tarheel,” one of 51 books used to share the history and beauty of each state and Washington, D.C., using letters and numbers. “The good thing about these books is every year there’s a new fourth grader that needs to learn about his state,” Crane said. “It’s just been a marvelous way for children to get to know their country.” Italian food, I simply love! And there’s no exception when it comes to this wonderful family favorite. Simply start with frozen bread or pizza dough. After thawing, roll out and fill with desired layers of meats and cheeses and spices. Fold together and bake to perfection. Pizza lovers are sure to enjoy this. And you don’t have to eat out at an Italian restaurant, when you can easily prepare this speciality at home. This recipe also makes for a wonderful appetizer. Just slice thin and your guests will love it. Recently, we had a family get together. With our three kid’s jobs and locations in opposite directions, it’s not always easy to have everybody available at the same time. While planning the menu, I knew they’d be arriving at different times. I wanted to have something ready and waiting. Immediately, making Stromboli came to mind! While their views and thoughts may have always been different, one thing they can always agree on. Stromboli, always a family favorite! Here are two variations. Hope you will try and enjoy! Stromboli 2 loaves frozen bread 1 lb. cooked hamburger 1/2 lb. provolone cheese, sliced ½ lb. salami or deli ham, sliced 1/2 lb. Mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded Parmesan cheese Oregano or Italian Seasoning and Garlic Salt and pepper to taste OR 2 loaves frozen bread 1 lb. cooked sausage ½ lb. provolone cheese, sliced ½ lb. salami or deli ham, sliced ½ lb. Mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded Parmesan cheese Oregano or Italian Seasoning and Garlic Salt and pepper to taste Allow frozen bread dough to thaw and rise according to directions. Sprinkle work space Each page has lines of rhyming text that help children as young as Kindergarten age learn about their state. But the books have many different uses. Some have used the books as tour guides on vacation, while Crane plans to use the with flour, oregano, garlic salt and pepper to taste in a rectangle. Place thawed bread dough on mixture and turn to coat sides well. Roll out to form large rectangle. In middle of each rectangle layer in order: Cooked hamburger or sausage Provolone cheese Salami or deli ham Mozzarella cheese Sprinkle top with season- South Carolina book to help teach students math in Charleston. Crane, who moved to Holly Springs seven years ago, has worked on seven of the books in the series, more than any other author associated with the Sleeping Bear Press series. She has enjoyed spending time in each state she writes about – going white water rafting in North Carolina and dog sledding in Alaska. She takes photos of all of her adventures to help her recall details and to help the artist that hand draws each picture in the books. Crane said she loves ings and Parmesan cheese to taste. Fold one side over, then the other side towards the middle. Pinch and seal sides. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top and pat down. Place Stromboli on greased cookie sheet (which has been sprinkled with corn meal, optional). Bake at 375 to 400 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. This can be made ahead and frozen.
