objective for running is to continue to
ensure that the citizens of Fuquay-Varina
have a voice with the choices made with
regards to the direction of growth and future
development in our town. We need to
be proactive and not merely reactive to the
needs of the community. We need leaders
who will work diligently to see that our citizens
have jobs and that we will keep our
taxes low.”
Hearn is no stranger to public service.
He has served as the Post Adjutant for the
American Legion and the Vice-Chair of the
Lillington Area Chamber of Commerce.
According to Hearn, Fuquay-Varina has
one of the lowest tax rates in Wake County.
However, he said if he was elected he
would like to work to get them even lower.
“Currently Fuquay-Varina has the third
lowest tax rate in Wake County. While this
might be satisfactory for some leaders, I
believe we can lower them even more by
cutting wasteful spending.”
When the Fuquay-Varina Independent
asked Hearn what he felt the town could do
to attract new businesses and industries,
he said there were lots of things the town

the kind and personable people
and the affordable cost of living.”
Galvanek said he decided to
run for one of the three seats
up for grabs on the Fuquay-
Varina Town Board in an effort
to stand behind the community
he calls home.
“I chose to run for office in
hopes to support and grow the
community I am fully invested
in,” Galvanek said.

Wahl Advertising Agency, Jump
and Laugh Inflatable Rentals
and Strafe Gaming Lounge. He
said there have been several
things that has concerned him
since he moved into the area
and brought his businesses to
the community. It was these
concerns that made him to decide
to run for the council.
“Since moving to Fuquay-
Varina I have witnessed a
delay and even a decline in
the growth and progress of the
town. Several Fuquay-Varina
businesses have closed down
or moved out of town and
many struggle to make ends
meet. New home development
and home sales, including in
my own neighborhood, has
virtually come to a halt. I have
brought my family of four and
three businesses to the town,
so Iam personally impacted by
a slowed economy and town
growth.”
Galvanek said he was encouraged
to run for the position
on the town board.

to remember the existing businesses.
“There are a number of things we can
do to encourage new business to come to
town. At the same time we must remain
mindful of our existing businesses. More
than 80 percent of the new jobs and investment
in our community comes from businesses
that are already here. We should
work hard with those businesses, large
and small, to ensure their long-term viability
in Fuquay-Varina. We should also work
with economic developers in Wake County
and coordinate a comprehensive business
visitation program. I will ensure that every
business in Fuquay-Varina – large, small,
manufacturing, service or retail, receives
equal attention.
The Fuquay-Varina Independent also
asked Hearn if he felt that the town had an
adequate amount of parks. Hearn said yes.
“I believe our parks are sufficient to
meet the current needs of our community
at this time.”
When questioned about whether or not
he felt that the town’s building and inspection
requirements were too strict, Hearn
member, I’ve learned that
many citizens and businesses
of the Fuquay-Varina also share
my concerns. Several community
members and business
associates have also suggested
I run for office because of my
business sense, patience and
ability to make informed, unbiased
decisions which has added
to my decision to run.”
When not working with his
businesses, Galvanek has also
served as the president of the
Central Jersey Professional
Group, president of the Village
of Charleston Home Owners
Association and as president of
the Apex Peak Performers BNI
group.
When asked what he thought
the town board should do to
encourage new industries and
businesses to come to Fuquay-
Varina, Galvanek said the town
should do three things.
“Fuquay-Varina can encourage
business to open in town
in three ways. First, the town
should better educate companies
on opening and operating
a business in Fuquay-Varina.
Informational documentation
should be straight forward and
easily accessible for potential
business managers. Hosting
regular business seminars
would boost the confidence
to choose Fuquay-Varina by
answering questions and providing
face-to-face contact and
networking with local peers
and officials. Second, the town
can more aggressively seek
federal grants and loans that

Lastly, the town can offer incentives
such as tax breaks to
businesses that open and operate
within city limits and under
progressive strategies.”
Galvanek said the community
needs more businesses in
the community.
“With more businesses
comes more jobs, more revenue
and ultimately a thriving
economy and community.”
However, the opening of
a business in town is difficult
because of the town’s current
building and inspection requirements,
Galvanek said.
“The building and inspections
requirements of Fuquay-
Varina are not clearly
defined, making for an arduous
process when opening
a business in town. If better
documented and communicated,
the requirements
would not seem too stringent.”
Galvanek said he is also
not pleased with the town’s
tax rate.
“I believe the tax rate of
Fuquay-Varina is too high.
Surrounding towns comprised
of equal or more
amenities have lower tax
rates, creating an incentive
for potential residents and
businesses to choose other
towns over Fuquay-Varina.”

pleased with the amount of

said during certain cases the requirements
should be reviewed.
“While building inspection requirements
are necessary to assure the public safety,
I believe from time to time these requirements
should be reviewed to see which
ones are truly needed and which ones may
be outdated.”
Hearn also offered several ideas on what
he thought would make people want to live
or start a business in the community.
“What will bring individuals to Fuquay-
Varina will be opportunity,” Hearn said.
“They will want high quality schools, a safe
environment and close proximity to recreation
and other activities for their families
to enjoy.”
According to Hearn, the work force
would attract businesses to the community.
“What will bring businesses to Fuquay-
Varina will be low taxes and the availability
of a qualified/skilled work force. They’ll
want an environment where local government
supports their business, but not
stifles the growth by unreasonable regulations.”

increasing job availability.”

Over the next few weeks the Fuquay-Varina
Independent will introduce you to those who
are campaigning for seats on the Town Board
and those running for Mayor of Fuquay-Varina.
Their stories continue this week with
two more candidates. All candidates received
the same questions and were given the same
amount of time in which to respond. All of
their stories are available on our web site

are two incumbent commissioners, Bill Harris
and Charlie Adcock, along with five others
running for three open seats on Fuquay-Varina’s
Town Board.
Harris, who has served about 22 years on
the board, lost his seat four years ago, but was
subsequently appointed by the board to fill a
vacancy created by the death of Jeff Wells in
2009. The seat Harris currently holds is open
to be filled through election this fall.
Incumbent Commissioner Charlie Adcock
is also seeking reelection. He was elected to
the board four years ago and is seeking a second
term. A third seat is open as a result of
the death of Jimmy Johnson earlier this year.
Newcomers seeking seats on the board include:
Paxton Edward Galvanek, Sean Robert
Hearn, Edward Alan Ridpath, Thomas Allen
Williford and Jason Ora Wunsch.
John Byrne, who has served as mayor of
Fuquay-Varina for 10 years, is also seeking
reelection. A mayor’s term runs for only two
years while commissioners are elected to
four-year terms. Byrne is being challenged
by Michael Dorman, executive director of the
nonprofit Military Missions in Action, an organization
that assists disabled veterans.
The election is Nov. 8.
