It was a special day for this organization of women who meet to hear Christian speakers. This time in addition to the speaker, they met to honor the memory of one of their own. Vickie Pittman Atkins, 64, passed away Sept. 2, 2011 after a brief illness. She had been an integral part of the core group of Priority Associates from its inception. Having worked diligently, she had helped in the effort to bring Christian speakers to the area. Vickie, a teller at Patriot State Bank, often asked coworker, Renee Hayes, Corporate Secretary and Executive Assistant, to sing for the group. At the previous meeting in July, Vickie had obtained the speaker and asked Renee to be the soloist. A picture of Vickie was displayed as Theresa Hamby, Doris Weathers and Renee Hayes each gave personal and heart-felt remembrances of her. They told how Vickie had supported Priority Associates and how much she had done for each of them as a loving and close friend. All three spoke of how she loved having her friends attend Priority meetings. We were all challenged to be more like Vickie as she sought to follow her Lord. Renee sang “Come to Jesus” which she had sung at Vick- Fuquay Varina - Roy Rufus Baker, 62, passed away at Rex Health Care October 4, 2011. He was born in Wake county to the late Rufus and Velma Baker. Roy was an employee of the Town of Fuquay-Varina for over 20 years, serving as Assistant Fire Chief and dispatcher for the fire and police departments. Mr. Baker is survived by his uncle, O.L. Baker (wife Carolyn), friends Ronnie and Lisa Murray, Cathy Sykes, and Judith Dean as well as numerous other friends and family members. The guest speaker for the luncheon was Judy Herriott. Judy grew up in England but came to the US in 1979 with her husband and two young daughters. Her ministry as a Bible teacher and prayer ministry leader is exceptional. It reaches into many states and back to several European countries. Judy also established the “Upper Room” prayer ministry for both Providence Baptist Church and Christ Church in Raleigh. The title of Judy’s message was: “There Must Be More to Life Than This.” She told of a happy and carefree childhood. Her father was distant but a good provider; her mother was loving and cheerful. Judy’s teenage years were filled with many things to enjoy including her ponies. But money and possessions were not giving her what she needed. She thought things would come together for her when she got to college. Yet, all the time, she kept wondering if there could be more to life. Always the optimist, Judy thought she would find what she was looking for when she started teaching or after marriage. She had a desire to impress others with her well dressed little girls. She thrived on praise. While buying material one day to make dresses for the girls, she was told of a play group for children at Christ Church there in England. What she didn’t understand was that the mothers were to have Bible Study while the children were at play. She continued to ask, “Surely there must be more to life than this?” Judy expressed that the Lord, in His grace, brought her to Christ Church. She soon found that the ladies in the group had a quality of life for which she had been seeking. She stated that she learned that she was a sinner; that everyone was a sinner. She had not thought of herself as such. She thought murderers, thieves, and big time liars were sinners. She read Rom. 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” If all had sinned then she, too, must be a sinner. She had thought her good deeds would outweigh her bad deeds, and she would go to heaven. She realized this was not what the Bible taught. The ladies at the study told her that Jesus was like a bridge between her and God. A longtime resident of Harnett County, he was born October 1, 1938 and was preceded in death by his father, Lacy Rambeaut. Sgt. Rambeaut retired from the United States Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam before he retired after 20 years of service to his country. The Undead Wake a Quiet Town The Triangle has been home to countless 5k races and unique fundraisers before, but has it ever been invaded by zombies? One thing is for certain, it will in 2011. This Oct. 29, the quiet town of Fuquay- Varina, will be wakened with the undead nipping at their heels at the Strafe Zombie Run, a zombie-themed 5k run and fundraiser. The fearless living of all ages throughout the Triangle will have the opportunity to participate in this unique event as brain hungry zombies, run-for-your-life survivors, go-get-‘em slayers, defending zombie hunters or lookout spectators. During and after the game there will be plenty of live entertainment, a Wee Zombie Zone for the little living, refreshments, Halloween costume contests for all ages and a survivor after party at Strafe Gaming Lounge. “We want to raise money for the Fuquay- Varina Technology in the Classroom initiative in a unique way and nothing goes better with Halloween and video game play than zombies” say Paxton and Jessica Galvanek, creators of the Strafe Zombie Run and owners of Strafe Gaming Lounge, the presenter of the event. The 5k run will begin early morning out front of Strafe Gaming Lounge on Academy Street and will follow along scenic residential roads of Fuquay-Varina. The only catch is the route will be littered with Fuquay-Varina Lieutenant Kenny Atkins knows exactly what he’s going to do when he retires on October 1st after more than 30 years of service as a police officer including 19 years of service in Fuquay-Varina. He plans on spending lots of quality time with his two year old grandson Carter, tinkering with his 1963 ½ Ford Galaxy and 1923 Ford T Bucket, and generally enjoying life. Atkins will also continue to run a landscaping business. Lt. Atkins began his career in law enforcement in Lillington in 1979 where he graduated from high school and has lived his entire life. He served in Lillington until May 1986, when he joined the Fuquay-Varina Police Department. In January, 1988 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Lillington for three years in 1989 and left law enforcement in 1992 but continued to serve at the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office in a part-time capacity until June of 1995.
