The system showed that <strong>the</strong> electronic timber credits for <strong>the</strong> Fábrica Farm<br />

management plan had been used up, but <strong>the</strong> on-site inspec<strong>to</strong>rs verified that<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>forest</strong> had not been <strong>to</strong>uched and not a single tree had been cut. A license<br />

had been issued for 43 thousand cubic meters of logs and 64 thousand cubic<br />

meters of residues for charcoal. Said volumes of material had been produced<br />

in fact, but in a far away region that was not open for timber exploration. The<br />

timber was “legalized” with <strong>the</strong> credits from Fábrica Farm. Third parties bought<br />

<strong>the</strong> credits from Fábrica’s management plan holder – <strong>the</strong> person who submitted<br />

<strong>the</strong> plan <strong>to</strong> environmental authorities.<br />

The woman who received <strong>the</strong> fraudulent license and 32 companies that<br />

bought timber credits from her ended up in court and may be forced <strong>to</strong> pay 100<br />

million reais in reparation and <strong>to</strong> re<strong>forest</strong> an area of 2.6 thousand hectares. The<br />

case, along with dozens o<strong>the</strong>r suits, is piled up on <strong>the</strong> desk of federal prosecu<strong>to</strong>r<br />
