on the slow track<br />
in a technologically high-speed world<br />
it is better at times (maybe most times)<br />
to cry i think i’ll be a steam train today<br />
and putter and puff through a landscape<br />
exactly designed for calm movement<br />
this is the time when proportions<br />
touch on the quick of good living<br />
thought has the grace of a wayside flower<br />
and a bend in the so slow river reflects<br />
the train keeping up its chuffed song<br />
frailty has its place here too and the notso-smooth<br />
run of the bones and ages knock<br />
(this landscape absorbs such distempers—<br />
even the train’s going round the bend<br />
can cause its wry smile)—ahead though<br />
the traveling fruits to be picked still tempt<br />
the tongue to water (excite the eye) incite<br />
rich speculations at the turning pages—that<br />
(in the passenger the journey’s knit for)<br />
life’s broken tapestries grow whole again<br />
