Preface Jim Stuckey, an American historian, noted that few sketches of prominent Americans mention religious backgrounds. In contrast, he observed, Quaker ancestry is often mentioned. What of higher education? Few Presbyterian colleges give great attention to ancient dogmas like predestination, few Methodist to revivalism, few Baptist to total immersion, and few Catholic to proving their Church is the one true Church. Yet, for numbers of institutions in this volume, Quaker traditions—nonviolence, peacemaking, gender equality, services to the poor, sexual purity, and the interconnectedness of all persons—are relevant to the academic experience. Some schools attend to some pieces of the tradition, some to others. These Quaker stories challenge us to revisit the query “What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem?” This volume invites us to give closer attention to how religion and education sometimes compete with and sometimes complement or enrich one another. The importance of the question “What should religion have to do with higher education?” may be one reason why Azusa Pacific, Bryn Mawr, Cornell, Earlham, Friends Center at Azusa Pacific, George Fox, Guilford, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, and Swarthmore donated monies for this volume that promises to enlarge the dialogue.
