It was a joy to work on Founded by Friends, to no small degree because I
was privileged to work with two extraordinary people, Charles and
Caroline Cherry. Charles and Caroline represent the best of the Quaker
spirit and of academic excellence.
Working on Cradles of Conscience: Ohio’s Independent Colleges and Universities,
I was impressed by the role of religion and reform in higher education
and intrigued to know more about what a Quaker heritage has to do
with the character of schools founded by Friends. The first place I went to
plan for this volume was to Charles Cherry, editor of Quaker History. If
Charles would agree to join this project, I knew scholars from Quaker institutions
of higher learning would happily join in. This volume stands as
a monument to all these good people and to the Society of Friends.
Caroline Cherry was icing on the cake. A member of Friends General
Conference, Caroline knows the liberal Quaker scene. As chair of the Department
of English at Eastern University, she is also well acquainted with
the evangelical mind. To no small degree, this volume is a product of the
loving labors of Charles and Caroline Cherry.
I am also grateful to Thomas Hamm for his excellent introduction to the
topic of Quaker higher education. It has been a joyous privilege to work
with Friends who I know to be friends.
