September Collections Tour & Picnic
by Dick Robinson
Saturday, Sept 8th will be the day of our driving
tour. This will be a close-in tour of about 50 miles.
We will
leave from the
Wm. Bolton
American Legion
at 9:00 AM and
tour to Doylestown
Township to visit
the varied and eclectic collection of Bob Campbell. Expect
to see everything from brass-age antiques thru a street-legal
contemporary Indy car.
From there we will travel via secondary roads to
see the unmatchable Ford collection of Ross Myers. Ross’s
collection of vintage hot rods and 50’s and 60’s era Ford
racing cars is probably the finest collection of its type in the
country.
We will finish up with a picnic lunch at Dick
Robinson’s Fort Washington home. There will be some
cars to see, but expect more of a train theme. The G-gauge
garden railroad is now up and running, although scenery
details are still in process. The O and S gauge layout in the
basement will be open.
This is an any-weather tour. Drive your Corvette
or anything else if you are bringing too many people to
fit into the Corvette. You will be given a tour directions
packet at the Legion so that you can drive in groups or
as a single. It is impossible to keep a single file line of cars
together on tours such as this.
Although not mandatory, it is a big help to have an
idea as to how many of you will be on the tour, especially
for lunch. Please let Dick Robinson know via e-mail at
rrobinson33@verizon.net or 215.646.4495.
NCRS Gallery VII Information
by Elaine Raisner
The NCRS Gallery
at Corvettes at Carlisle
cannot take place without
the support from fellow
NCRS members. Assistance
is needed from Thursday morning at 11:30 AM until 3:30
PM on Sunday to help out with the NCRS Gallery. We
need fellow members to volunteer to help park cars for
as well as be a presence and help answer questions to the
general public regarding NCRS inside the Gallery during
exhibit hours.
All members who have volunteered, please check
with Frank Stech or Elaine Raisner to verify when you have
been scheduled to work and help out.
Thanks for your continued support in helping with
the NCRS activities at Corvettes at Carlisle. We couldn’t
do it without you!
NCRS National Corvette Road Tour
words & pictures by Bob Cook
We took the road tour in 2005 to Park City, Utah,
but I thought, “It’s not worth taking a road tour to a
location as close as Boston.” Wrong! Luckily, I was at Bill
Sangrey’s house when a friend delivered a set of wheels to
Bill before Spring Carlisle, and Bill told me about the plans
he had for the road tour. It sounded too good to miss,
so, we signed up and on Thursday, July 19, we left home
early heading to Mike McCagh’s farm near Cumberland,
Maryland. We made it just in time for Bill’s first “Driver’s
Meeting” at 11:00 am. We then had a buffet lunch in front
of Mike’s antique gas station. We had plenty of time to look
through Mike McCagh’s collection of Corvettes and other
collector cars. Mike has two beautiful, two-level garages
full of cars—restored and mint original cars on the upper
levels and project cars in the lower level areas. He also has
a great collection of memorabilia and a work shop area (in
the antique gas station) to die for. If you have not, and get
the chance to visit Mike’s, I highly recommend it.
Driver’s Meeting
2
dinner and then invited to view the Miller Collection any
time after 6:00 pm. (We viewed the collection last year as
a part of our 2006 Delaware Valley Chapter road trip.)
Lance Miller was there giving small group tours with
explanations of each of the cars with their provenance and
why they were purchased—as always, he did a great job.
Each morning Bill Sangrey held a “Driver’s
Meeting” at 7:45 am and then we left in our groups at
8:00 am. By now, the total number of Corvettes in the
road tour was probably more than 50 with a few trailered
cars following. With beautiful weather and temperatures
in the 70s, Friday morning was covered bridge time. Our
route through southern Pennsylvania took us through a lot
of small, picturesque roads leading to 8 different covered
bridges. By early afternoon we were headed for Albany, NY.
Our group had a 1956 Corvette, a 1966 (first day only), a
1969, and a bunch of C4s and newer cars. Unfortunately,
the 56 started cutting out in mid-afternoon. It stopped
twice and the driver was able to pull it off the road. On
the second stop, several “mechanically oriented” group
members jumped in and decided that the most likely cause
was a plugged fuel filter. The engine had been recently
rebuilt, but the fuel filter when it was taken off looked
terrible. As luck would have it, the 56 stopped right across
the road from a used car dealer with a solid axle Corvette
on its sign. A couple guys took the original filter across the
road and were able to clean it out. After reinstalling the
filter, the 56 ran fine and had no more trouble on the rest
of the trip. That evening we stayed in Latham, NY, near
Albany.
On Saturday, another beautiful, cool day, the groups
had choices. Our original group went to Bennington, VT
As you know, convention road tours begin around
the country and meet up before arriving at the convention.
We were part of the Northeast tour but were met at Mike’s
by the Florida tour and folks from the Midwest.
We left Mike’s about 1:00 pm in groups of 8 to
10 and headed through the “back roads” to Carlisle—a
beautiful drive. Two-way radios allowed the groups to stay
in contact and were especially helpful when part of the
group got stuck at a stop light or took a wrong turn. After
checking into the Carlisle Hotel, we were on our own for A small portion of the Gillette collection

to visit the Hemmings garage, but since we had been to
Hemmings and wanted to see the Jack Gillette collection,
we changed groups and headed to Lake George, NY. Jack
opened his collection of 59 Corvettes to the group and
even provided coffee and donuts. What a sight—all those
Corvettes in two large buildings. The collection includes
two 53s, two 54s, a 55, several 56 and 57s, one or more
58, 59, 60, 61, and 62 models. Mid-years were also well
represented as were C3s. There were even a couple C4s
including a ZR1 that Jack had bought new. As you can
see from the pictures the buildings were decorated with
memorabilia.
And then it was off to the Vermont Country Store
for some shopping. Luckily, we made it through without
adding any purchases from the store—believe me, our
2002 Z06 was already full.
Friday night we stayed in Brattleboro, VT where
all of the road tours from around the country joined up
for the final leg to Marlborough. There were around 100
Corvettes with some trailers following. The total number
of Road Tour registrations was about 114, with several
canceling at the last minute due to family emergencies, etc.
The organizers had planned an evening dessert reception
at the Battleboro Eagles Lodge near one of the hotels.
We were able to register for the convention during the
reception, eliminating the need to stand in line once we
got to Marlborough.
Sunday morning we left about 8:30 am for
Marlborough with instructions to reconvene at Assabet
Valley Regional Technical High School near Marlborough
by 11:00 am. When we arrived, the cars were lined up
by year, ready to leave on the parade through downtown
Chairman’s Message
by Dick Robinson
The Marlborough convention will always be a fond
memory for me. Blessed with near perfect weather and
scenic top-down New England views, the road tour was a
vivid reminder of why it’s worth it to put the effort into the
restoration of an early Corvette.
The featured “year of the ‘57” brought out over
forty ‘57s. Unbelievable quality, original, previously unseen
cars were there—not only ‘57s, but up thru some ‘67s
that looked like they were built last year instead of forty
They put those C4s to all kinds of use in Massachusetts!
Marlborough. The parade was lead by a Massachusetts
State Police Corvette—followed by the featured 50-year
old 1957 Corvettes. One hundred Corvettes of all years
parading through Marlborough had to be quite a sight,
and a number of local folks came to see all the cars.
The final activity for the road tour was a lunch
in the Convention Hotel parking lot. I have to say that
Bill Sangrey and his team put in a lot of work and did
an excellent job. I think everyone had a great time. In
addition to seeing some fascinating Corvette collections
and beautiful scenery, we met several people we are looking
forward to seeing at future events.
Next year the convention will be held in St.
Charles—right outside of St. Louis, MO. I understand Bill
is already working on a route and planning activities along
the way. We are planning to sign up—and I would highly
recommend that you do the same.
years ago.
Most any NCRS show will bring out nicely restored
cars, but it is only at the National Convention that
the Bowtie candidates gather, and they are really the cars
to study. I just wish all the conventions were as close as
Boston instead of being located on the west coast, rocky
mountains, etc.
Our collections tour is set for Saturday, September
8 at 9 am from the Legion. Details are posted on the web
site and will be amplified at our August 15 meeting. See
you then ... Dick
