AAROC is a local chapter of the national Alfa Romeo Owner's Club and is dedicated to the enjoyment of Alfa Romeo Automobiles and the advancement of the Alfa Romeo marque. Subscription to this newsletter is included with membership to the national Alfa Romeo Owner's Club and expressed affiliation with the Arizona Chapter. Classifieds, contributions, and criticisms are welcome and should be addressed to the editor by mail, phone, or email. Technical information, data, or suggestions in this publication are the opinions of the contributing authors, and, as such, their accuracy or correctness cannot be warranted by AAROC or the national organization. All owners should determine the suitability of any modifications: the club will not assume liability for any consequences. Meetings General meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM. The meetings are held at an appropriate Italian restaurant (see the latest newsletter or club website for details). Board meetings, open to all members at the discretion of the board, are held two weeks prior to the general meeting. Photo by Rick Mahrle Sedona Overnight Tour The previously announced Jerome Tour has been changed to make Sedona the destination. After meeting at the McDonalds on Shea in Fountain Hills for an 8 a.m. departure on May 19, the drive up north will go through Payson, Pine/Strawberry, Camp Verde and Cottonwood before stopping at the King s Ransom Inn in Sedona. The ALFA RUMOR The Arizona Alfa Romeo Owners Club Presidential Bondo (All the Filler Fit to Print) If you didn t get a chance to go to the Copperstate 1000 send off, you missed seeing a rare 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Berlinetta Aerodynamica. See the picture on the front page of this month s Rumor. If you want to see more photos, www.desert-motors.com plans to have more photos on their site soon. It was amazing to see in person. The Jerome event has been changed to a Sedona event due to Jerome being completely booked for the foreseeable future. Check the club online calendar for details. If you are going, you need to make your reservations ASAP as our selected motel has a high likelihood of selling out. I have been kicking around the idea of creating a chapter honorary award for one member to be recognized each year for their past contributions to the club. I need suggestions from all of you as to the process of nomination and selection of the award recipient. As an example, all nominations would come from the membership, the board would select three of the nominees, and then all members would vote to pick which one of the three would be recognized. This is just one possible way to select the recognized member. Or, it could just be left up to the board to select the recipient. I would like input from everyone with ideas that the board can use to put together a process for the selection. You also might think this is not a good idea. Let me know that, too. Please give me your thoughts on this at the next meeting so we can formulate a plan. I hope to see everyone at the next general meeting and at our events. Ciao Mark . Active Rumors/Notes from the Editor Since I have worked on or driven in the Copperstate 1000 for most of its 22 years, it is remarkable to see how well-organized and exciting the event has become. As most of you know, the Copperstate 1000 is a vintage car rally that spends four days, at about 250 miles a day, traveling around some of the state s best twisty and scenic roads. Proceeds from the event go to the Men s Arts Council, which organizes the event with solely volunteers. The Men s Arts Council then uses the funds raised to support Phoenix Art Museum. The cars left from Tempe Diablo Stadium starting at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, ending up in Flagstaff. Some inclement weather, cold, some rain, even sleet, greeted some of the participants. Those in open cars, such as a D- Type Jag, were glad that nothing too heavy hit the caravan. The cars were covered in frost on Monday morning, but it was in the 80s by the time they got to Tucson, where the drivers and co-drivers stayed at the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain. A loop south through Cochise County brought the participants back to the Ritz on Tuesday. On the trip back to Phoenix on Wednesday, the drivers had the opportunity to drive their own vintage cars, or cars that were provided, on the track at Bondurant. There were three Alfas on the Copperstate this year. The most unique was Richard Mattei s 1942 6C 2500 SS Berlinetta Aerodynamica. This car has chassis number 915513 and is one of only six known 6C 2500 SS survivors. The last known owner of the car in Italy was in 1945, but the original body did not survive.
