4 October 26 octobre 2012 A fitting tribute Citoyen Borden Citizen Un hommage bien mérité By: Leighsah Millward-Kyte, Staff Writer The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations occurred last week at CFB Borden on October 16, celebrating 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and recognizing her as Head of State in our country. Canada’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations will see 60, 000 Canadians invested with the Diamond Jubilee Medal. Of those recipients, 11,000 are military members and 383 are civilian Defense Team members. Citoyen Borden Citizen October 26 octobre 2012 Running for education / Course pour les études By: Leighsah Millward-Kyte, Staff Writer CFB Borden was the site of the 3rd annual Base Borden Run on Sunday October 21. Over 600 people crowded the parking area across from the Buell Fitness Centre awaiting their race to begin. The Base Borden Run supports Operation Hero, a program initiated by Hon. Colonel Jamie Massie, to fund yearly scholarships at Georgian College for families and dependants of CF members. “A lot of monies have been raised by sponsors coming from the community that have stepped forward and we are really proud of this. Along with the registration fees, this helps raise the funds (for Operation Hero),” commented Matt Pryce, one of the organizers of the Run. Not including this year’s race, the Run has raised over $50,000 for the scholarships in past years. There were three races available to runners this year: the 5km, the 10km and the 21km half marathon. Participants included runners from local communities, the base and our Borden Striders running club who were out in force. While runners waited for their race to start, the military put out a display of weapons and vehicles for the public to look at and ask questions of the soldiers on hand. “Its amazing support for the scholarships. All the volunteers and people that have put so much time in happen to reflect the spirit that Operation Hero conveys, the community and everybody, including the military community, that have supported the run and come out to make it happen…Its wonderful,” commented Hon. Col Massie. Thanks to all who supported the run and came out for some exercise on a beautiful day. By: Leighsah Millward- Kyte, Staff Writer The Borden Striders Running Club is a group of people who have one thing in common, “We love to run. We love the company and the social aspect of running,” stated club president, Kiriam Thompson. The Striders run the gamut from kids to older adults with skill levels ranging from beginner to over 20 years of running experience. This industrious group of people meet three times weekly: Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:15 p.m. at the Buell Fitness Centre and Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at the Tim Horton’s in Angus. The weekday sessions are shorter runs of a few kilometers to longer runs on the Sunday. They run roads, the Trillium Trail, or sometimes the golf course, weather pending. Whether or not you are a new runner or a leisurely runner - don’t be intimidated. The Striders motto is, ‘no one gets left behind’. They adapt to new runners and make sure that there is always someone running with the slowest person. The social group is important to them and they like to run together. The Striders help each other to improve. New or experienced runners all can learn something from the group. They emphasize that breaks and water are needed and that you should do what your body tells you, rather than pushing too hard and risking injury. La course de la BFC Borden appuie l’opération Hero, un programme mis sur pied par le Colonel honoraire Jamie Massie afin d’offrir des bourses d’études annuelles pour les familles et les personnes à charge de membres des FC afin qu’elles puissent fréquenter le Collège Georgian. « Beaucoup de fonds ont été amassés auprès de commanditaires recrutés dans la communauté, et nous en sommes très fiers. Leurs dons et les frais d’inscription nous aident à recueillir les fonds nécessaires (pour l’opération Hero) », a affirmé M. Matt Pryce, l’un des organisateurs de la course. La course a permis d’amasser 50 000 $ pour les bourses au fil des ans (sans tenir compte des fonds recueillis cette année). Les coureurs pouvaient s’inscrire pour l’un de trois parcours cette année : le 5 km, le 10 km et le 21 km (demi marathon). Au nombre des participants, il y avait des membres de la communauté locale et de la BFC Borden ainsi qu’une équipe nombreuse du Club de course de Borden « Les Striders ». En attendant le début de la course, le public a pu admirer une exposition d’armes et de véhicules préparée par les militaires et poser des questions aux soldats sur place. « Il s’agit d’une marque de soutien tout à fait extraordinaire pour le programme des bourses. Ces bénévoles et ces gens qui y consacrent beaucoup de temps personnifient l’esprit de l’opération Hero. La communauté, y For the love of the run is the same. The training plans reflect that, and are tailored to the individual, as many people run differently. The way you place your feet, the way you move your arms, the way you lean, tension in the body, this all matters, and they try to help you fix this. This discussion is often done over a cup of coffee after a good run; support and camaraderie is key for this group. Running will come indoors in November when the snow flies, with the exception of the Sunday run which will remain outdoors weather pending. When they move inside the runs become more structured, incorporating some body strengthening in the Buell Fitness Centre fieldhouse. The goal this winter is to hold clinics to address things such as proper running forms, injury prevention, structured training and coaching. They will be holding some clinics especially for young runners. Early spring will see the Striders running some ‘learn to run’ 5km and 10km clinics to help prepare for the coming outdoor season. The Striders are planning to hold some fundraising races on base next year and currently have been participating in runs in the local community, such as the Base Borden Run and the Run for the Toad. In fact, during the Run for the Toad, club member Cpl Kathleen Beaudry was the recipient of this year’s 50K Military Award and the top female with a race time of 4:20:09. This race is one of the 2012 Ontario Trail Series which consists of 12 races. Thompson says that by running, “We become more confident in knowing what we can do and what we are capable of. Some people say ‘Oh my gosh, you ran how many kms?’ Yeah! Anybody can do it.
