417 Royal Berkshire Regiment Silver Shooting Medal, soldier in seventeenth century uniform firing a musket, a castle in background, rev., badge of the regiment, with integral loop for suspension, good very fine; together with the Army Rifle Association, bronze medal, unnamed as issued, extremely fine (2) £40-50 418 Nelson Memorabilia: A bronze-gilt medallion, uniface, as used as a box lid (Brown, British Historical Medals, 1760-1960, Volume 1, 580), set in a glazed lunette within a wooden frame, a fouled anchor with superimposed scallop at top suspension, the reverse with note attached: ‘A number of these medals were struck after the death of Nelson at Trafalgar 21 st October 1805 and were worn by the sailors - In remembrance – for luck. It is taken from the bust by Flaxman. Bought by me at Colchester (19 VI 08) as a present for Evan G. C. Cavendish R.N. on his first going to sea as Midshipman in H.M.S. "Commonwealth," Channel Squadron, Elizabeth Cavendish, 7 May 1908.’, 150 x 132mm, cracks to veneer and with minor damp-stains to reverse backing, otherwise in fine condition £300-500 419 The Royal Body Guard, an octagonal Royal Worcester plate, dated 1879, from the Royal Body Guard Service with gilt decorated blue glaze border, the centre with Royal Body Guard Motif, in good condition £100-150 The Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms; The Royal Body Guard was instituted at the accession of Henry VIII in 1509. It was to be the guard in closest personal attendance to the monarch, and the portcullis was conferred on the corps as its personal badge. While the corps maintained military characteristics during its centuries of existence, it was not until the reign of William IV that the practice of filling vacancies by officers selected from a list maintained by the Commander in Chief of the Army was instigated. A new mess was established by Lord Foley, Captain of the Corps, in 1840, with a mess and ante room in St. James Palace. 420 Royal Navy Sweetheart's Brooch, Great War period, by Gieves Ltd., in gold comprising a crowned fouled anchor within laurel wreath, all set with rose diamonds, in fitted case of issue, extremely fine £300-400 421 Machine Gun Corps Sweetheart's Brooch, Great War period, in 15 carat gold, stamped with incuse B and ‘London Made’, the crown above with red and green enamel and initials HS beneath crossed machine guns, safety chain, extremely fine £200-300 422 Victoria Cross Memorabilia: Robert Southey, Life of Nelson, Everyman's Library, 1938 edition, the inside cover and flyleaf inscribed in ink: ‘To R. [Pitcher] served aboard the “Q” Ship H.M.S. Dunraven. He was also awarded the Médaille Militaire and Croix de Guerre (France). Served W.W.1 and 2. Age 57 yrs. E.H.P.’, with later ball-point annotations below, lacking dust jacket but in reasonable condition £50-100 423 Painting: ‘The Shape of Things to Come,’ an original watercolour by Stanley Orton Bradshaw, depicting a squadron of Hurricanes diving to the attack on manoeuvres in 1939, signed in full in red ink and dated '39, 49.5 x 34.5 cm., framed and glazed, minor foxing, otherwise in good condition £300-500 STANLEY ORTON BRADSHAW was born in 1903 and learned to fly at the London Aeroplane Club in 1926. He worked as an aviation journalist for The Aeroplane. In the early stages of the war he served in the A.R.P. service at Stanmore. Afterwards he was able to put his flying experience to good use with the Air Transport Auxiliary - being too old for service with the R.A.F.- and had flown approximately 70 different types of aircraft by the end of hostilities. After the war he returned to aviation journalism and was appointed editor of the Light Plane in 1947. Bradshaw became an enthusiastic lobbyist on behalf of civil flying clubs and a frequent visitor to air shows.
