7 Waterloo, Army of India Pair: William Goodwin, 14 th Foot, late Grenadier Guards, Waterloo 1815 (2 nd Batt. Grenad. Guards), Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen type, 1 clasp, Bhurtpoor (off. imp. 14 th Foot), contained in a custom-made fitted case, first good fine, second very fine, a very rare combination (2) £2,000-3,000 Ex Sotheby's, 6 November 1986, lot 830. Waterloo Roll confirms: Lt. Colonel, Sir Noel Hill's Company; Army of India Roll confirms. WILLIAM GOODWIN was born in 1793. He joined the Grenadier Guards in 1807, serving with them until 1816 when he transferred to the 14 th Foot; he was discharged in 1834, after 27 years service, with the rank of Quarter-Master Corporal Farrier. At the storming of Bhurtpoor, the front rank of the 14 th Foot consisted of Waterloo veterans, each of whom wore his Waterloo medal. 8 Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen type, 2 clasps, Nepaul, Ava, officially impressed Capt n Charles Graham, Artillery., tarnished, extremely fine £2,800-3,200 COLONEL CHARLES GRAHAM was born in Hamilton in December 1788, <strong>and</strong> passed through the Royal Military College, Marlow, <strong>and</strong> the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. In 1806 he joined the Bengal Artillery as a Lieutenant, arriving in India in July. He served in Oudh 1808 <strong>and</strong> Malwa 1809-10, <strong>and</strong> saw action with the 4 th Company, 1 st Battalion Foot Artillery in the Nepal <strong>War</strong> of 1814-15. In September 1817 he was made Captain Lieutenant <strong>and</strong> was promoted to Captain in the following year. During the third Maharatta war he served at Taragarh, Madhurajpura, Garhakota <strong>and</strong> Nasridah, <strong>and</strong> from 1821-26 he comm<strong>and</strong>ed the ‘Rocket Troop.’ During the Ava campaign he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 25 April 1826), <strong>and</strong> later took part in the campaign against the Wahabis <strong>and</strong> the action of 18-19 November at Barasat, comm<strong>and</strong>ing the 3 rd Troop 2 nd Brigade of the Horse Artillery. Promoted to Major in May 1832, he was subsequently appointed Deputy Principal Commissary Ordnance from October 1836 to December 1837. Promoted again to Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1837 he was made a C.B. on 20 July 1838. On the retirement of the army from Kabul he comm<strong>and</strong>ed the Sirbind Division of artillery. He was Principal Commissary Ordnance from November 1845 to December 1847, retiring on 1 January 1848. In November 1854 he was made an Honorary Colonel. Colonel Graham died at Suffolk Square, Cheltenham, 26 February 1858. Sold with a 50mm silver badge, bearing the Graham of Rednock family crest, <strong>and</strong> a framed <strong>and</strong> glazed portrait of the recipient in uniform, with a copy of his obituary notice on the reverse.
