6 KIUC CURRENTS By Maile Moriguchi Replace, Recycle, Save Update In late May through June, coop members had an opportunity to replace their old refrigerator with a new, more energyefficient unit and receive a $250 rebate. The federally funded program— called “Replace, Recycle, Save”— was very successful. Within a week, KIUC had issued all 385 applications for the rebate. KIUC continued to offer a $50 appliance rebate for refrigerators once the $250 federal rebate funds were exhausted. The program not only offered the $250 rebate, but gave a boost to retailers. It also will help members through energy savings and lower electric bills. Photo by Maile Moriguchi It is estimated that by replacing 385 refrigerators, KIUC’s members will save 40,425 kilowatthours (kWh) annually and 485,100 kWh during the 12year expected life of the new refrigerators. In addition, CO 2 emissions will be reduced by 873,540 pounds during that time period. This means members will save an aggregate of $169,785 during the course of 12 years. REMINDER: All 385 rebate applications were distributed and handed out in the first week of the program. The deadline to submit rebate applications to KIUC was July 31, 2010. However, not all 385 applications were returned. For those who did not submit their rebate applications, please send your completed applications as soon as possible to KIUC’s Energy Services, 4463 Pahe‘e St. Suite 1, Līhu‘e, HI 96766. I have heard it said that “first impressions are lasting impressions.” In the case of this month’s “A Picture’s Worth,” I found this saying to be pleasantly true. In the summer of 2006, I had my first opportunity to visit the Regency at Puakea, located just across the street from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, near Puhi. This tastefully designed community for retired and assisted living residents made a lasting impression on me. I had been asked to survey the community to try to identify energy savings opportunities. I was impressed by the friendly and capable staff, pleasant surroundings, amenities, interior décor and the Regency’s spacious landscaped grounds. The lobby and other areas were bustling with planned activities for the residents. Due to the newness and the quality of the community—which opened its doors in April of 2004—it was difficult to find energysaving opportunities. However, when we did, there was no hesitation by management in proceeding. By Paul Daniels A Picture’s Worth... One recommendation at the Regency involved converting elevator lighting from incandescent lighting to energyefficient lightemitting diodes (LEDs), making the Regency one of the first communities to use LEDs. Another project involved adding window tinting to reduce air conditioning costs. The most recent was the conversion of the Regency’s parking lot lighting from less efficient metal halide to highefficiency induction lighting. Induction lighting is not new, but has evolved into diverse applications. With its high luminous output at a fraction of the energy consumption, this longlasting (100,000 hours) and reasonably priced technology makes it a definite consideration when evaluating efficient lighting needs. I am happy to share that all of these projects qualified for assistance from KIUC’s Energy Wise Program.
