Programs and Case Studies Over the past year the Young Leaders Group hosted a number of exciting programs that sparked insightful discussions and highlighted best practices of new initiatives and development projects, including: “Hollywood & Vine Case Study” and “Revitalizing Historic Corridors.” Partnership Forums The ULI LA YLG Partnership Forum provides an ongoing opportunity to share and discuss with a group of peers the issues that real estate professionals face each day. We would like to thank each of our moderators for their time and commitment to mentor the next generation of leaders: Jeff Gault, Sunbrook Partners; Lew Horne, CBRE; Greg Gotthardt, Alvarez and Marsal; David Malmuth, David Malmuth Development; Ray Evans, Austin Equities; Marty Borko, Gensler. Education The YLG hosts a variety of workshops to educate its membership about current trends in real estate and help them expand their professional expertise. Workshops from this past year included: “Debt: Where to find it in 2010,” “Intro to Receivership,” “Forbearance, DIL, & Workouts: How to Banks Decide?”, “Asset Management: Who, What, Why, and How?”, and “ABC’s of BID’s”. Leading the Way Breakfast Series YLG continued its successful monthly breakfast series, titled “Leading the Way”, which provided an up close and personal opportunity to sit down with top real estate industry professionals and gain insight into leadership, career paths, success, lessons learned, and what ULI means to them. Participants tour the recently completed Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. Meet & Greets This year members had the opportunity for intimate discussions with Los Angeles public officials and prominent leaders through the Meet & Greet and Luminaries Series, including: - Richard Bruckner, County of Los Angeles Planning Department - Christine Essel, CEO, CRA/LA - Gail Goldberg, former Director of Planning, City of Los Angeles. - Douglas Guthrie, General Manager, LA Housing Department - Cal Hollis, Deputy Chief of Operations for Real Estate and Economic Development, CRA/LA - Bud Ovrom, General Manager, LA City Department of Building and Safety - Richard Ziman, Chairman, AVP Advisors - Michael LoGrande, Director of Planning, City of Los Angeles At the WAV, participants learned how PLACE and the City of Ventura were able to blend the arts, community-driven development, live/work spaces, small business development and affordable housing all together in one inspiring place. Breakfast Series The breakfast program features various topics of interest for the development community including: - Housing Trends with John McIlwain - Entitling Today for Tomorrow - New Money, Fresh Ideas, Diverse Directions - A Solution for Today’s Challenges and Tomorrow’s Projects - State of the Capital Markets - Landscape as Land Leverage - Thinking Outside the Big Box ULI Los Angeles Programs ULI Los Angeles offers programs that will give you a bird’s-eye view of what lies ahead in the real estate industry, where you need to be to stay competitive, and how to prosper in the world of development. In 2010, program topics ranged from capital markets, distressed properties, entitling projects, housing trends, site tours and more. Woodie Tescher, PBS&J; Gail Goldberg; Mitch Menzer, Paul Hastings; and Andrew Fogg, Cox, Castle & Nicholson at the Tribute to Gail Goldberg Reception. Case Studies and Site Tours ULI Los Angeles held numerous case studies this year highlighting unique projects and best practices. Guests heard from the project team and community leaders on what it took to be successful and toured the site.
