MegaJackpots ®
“Where’s Wheel of Fortune ® ?” “Do you
have that new 3-D Indiana Jones game?”
“Can I play Megabucks ® here?”
Players know what they like. Can your casino
deliver? If you can’t point your players to their favorite
MegaJackpots ® theme, it’s time to reassess your
participation mix.
Until its recent re-installation of nearly two dozen
Wheel of Fortune ® themes, Treasure Island’s slot
floor was MegaJackpots ® -less. TI Executive Director
of Slots Chris Sugden said letters from players and
a reevaluation of his participation mix prompted TI
management to bring back the Wheel. Contented
Wheel followers and maximized earning potential
resulted.
“We decided it would be best for our revenue
purposes and customer satisfaction [to bring Wheel
of Fortune ® back],” Sugden said. “Wheel of Fortune ®
games have a higher percentage of incremental play,
which made a better business decision.”
Smart operators like Sugden know and believe in
the benefits of having MegaJackpots ® themes. Players
want them. No other theme can offer the tremendous
jackpot amounts MegaJackpots ® themes can. And
IGT provides additional marketing and public relations
support at absolutely no extra cost. The bottom line:
the benefits outweigh the cost – always.
“Wheel of Fortune ® has been a great game for so
long and it has its following,” Sugden said. “It’s pretty
hard to compete without it, and there’s a definite need
for these games and titles.”
In the spirit of true partnership and participation,
IGT commits itself to helping casinos promote
MegaJackpots ® themes. IGT places
MegaJackpots ® ads in trade and
player-targeted publications
– benefitting both the
manufacturer and
the casinos. Upon
request, IGT
will supply
tailored
in-house
What’s in it for you?
marketing materials, taking the burden off of a casino’s
marketing department. A library of player-targeted
game videos is also available to all customers to run
on in-house video displays. And if the big one hits at
your casino, IGT helps facilitate the public relations
effort with press releases and coordination with the
media. All benefits a casino won’t pay for – ever.
“We’re very happy with the cooperation from
IGT,” Sugden said. “And we didn’t even know IGT
is capable of setting us up with Wheel of Fortune ®
themes for tournaments. What a great opportunity to
tap into the brand recognition and offer some variety.”
Since launching its MegaJackpots ® line in 1988,
IGT has awarded hundreds of lucky players across
the country with more than $2.5 billion. It’s a fact, no
other slot machine can award the big jackpot amounts
that MegaJackpots ® themes can. And players know it.
There’s a reason they seek MegaJackpots ®
themes – it’s all about their chance at the millions that
could change their lives.
And while some may argue that players don’t
know the difference between one wheel or another,
or one progressive theme from another, operators like
Sugden beg to differ.
“Players definitely noticed the Wheel’s return,”
he said. And while TI hosts other manufacturer’s
wheel themes, Sugden said players are drawn to the
real deal.
The phrasing may be trite and overused,
but times are indeed tough. Cutting back today may
work wonders for a casino’s current bottom line, but
what happens when players can’t find what they want
to play? The reality is they’ll go next door to find
their favorite Wheel and that chance at
mega millions. Sugden’s advice?
“Maintain your percentage.
Maximize your earning
potential. And
evaluate your
participation
mix.”

The unique features of the MLD ® technology
game featuring MLD ® to hit the market. And
the reception by players and operators alike has
been phenomenal.
“Players in all jurisdictions have shown
REELdepth will be an integral part of the
REELdepth offers endless
opportunity in Lottery markets
The introduction of REELdepth games to lottery
markets in the United States has proven to be a huge
success. REELdepth provides a variety of options and
opportunities for lottery markets. Key to this offering is
the ability for jurisdictions that are not allowed to have
true mechanical spinning reel games to give players
games that are as close to the real thing as it gets.
The virtual slot reels in REELdepth games emulate
the look, sound and feel of the older IGT ‘legacy’
mechanical reel counterparts. With true mechanical
spinning reels not being allowed in all jurisdictions,
IGT partnered with PureDepth to create the
REELdepth Multi-Layer Display ® (MLD) technology
to allow the player the look, sound, and feel of true
mechanical spinning reel games in a video format.
“For lottery markets, one of the most exciting
features of IGT’s new REELdepth games is the
video spinning reel technology,” said Tim Shortall,
vice president eastern region sales for IGT. “MLD ®
technology makes spinning reel games look,
reel games.”
The REELdepth games featuring MLD ® in the
“I see the future
of REELdepth and
MegaJackpots ® building on the
user experience and continuing
to offer engaging and stunning
content to players that will
keep them coming back,” Hallerbach said. “Most
players seek entertainment in their gaming experience
and our MegaJackpots ® products combined with
REELdepth offer entertainment and value on a whole
Delaware and Rhode Island are showing really great
performance numbers meaning that the games are
being very well received by players,” said Shortall.
“The REELdepth games have been reported to be
performing as high as twice zone/house averages.”
In addition, REELdepth provides operators with
unmatched flexibility. The technology allows multiple
games to be housed on the same machine. Players
are able to view and play a selection of their favorite
games by switching from a 3-reel to 4-reel to 5-reel to
video reel to poker within seconds – all on the same
AVP ® machine. A player can also switch to and from
a non-progressive feature to a progressive feature
just by choosing another game on the same AVP ®
machine. All games in the REELdepth line are ready
for server-based gaming today, but operators do not
need a server-based system to run the games or the
unique 3-D technology. REELdepth truly provides
casino operators with many choices to fit their needs.
“The vast number of options that REELdepth
provides operators is endless,” said Ryan Griffin,
First-to-market technology drives
impressive performance numbers
MultiPLAY has been approved and released in more than
38 jurisdictions including Nevada, California and Oklahoma.
MultiPLAY video slots feature first-to-market innovation exclusive
to IGT, and continue to drive “off-the-charts” performance
numbers across the country. The slot is the only one of its kind
in which players can choose to play up to four video slot games
on the same machine – at the same time. Another benefit is the
screen layout with four equal-sized game screens, causing less
eye strain and making it easy to follow the action. Plus, each
game spins independently, allowing a clear understanding of
each outcome.
“IGT really hit a home run with this game,” said Mike
Laubach, director of slot operations at The Orleans in Las
Vegas. “This game has received phenomenal response by
players. Out of 2,800 games, this game is the best one on our
floor – it’s off-the-charts.”
MultiPLAY is also a top-performer at Cache Creek in
California. “The games are performing well above house
average, and appeal to a wide range of players, from penny
to – surprisingly – high limit,” Cache Creek Vice President of
Slot Operations Russel Kinney said. “Many guests have stated
the games are tremendously fun and want to know when we’re
getting more themes.”
Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut also has seen
MultiPLAY performance numbers above the house average.
“We have had a tremendous response from our guests
regarding the new MultiPLAY games from IGT,” Mohegan Sun
Vice President of Slot Operations Frank Neborsky said. “The
players like the idea of being able to play multiple games at
once while having even more bonus opportunities.”
Mirage has garnered impressive performance numbers,
as well. “The performance of the MultiPLAY games has far
exceeded our expectations,” Mirage Vice President of Slots
Aaron Rosenthal said. “The games play great, customer
feedback has been excellent, and the resulting numbers are
well above all of our benchmarks.” Rosenthal said Cleopatra ®
MultiPLAY and Wolf Run ® MultiPLAY have performed over 2X
their zone averages. These numbers prove that MultiPLAY is a
game worth introducing and keeping on any casino floor.
And the numbers are backed by credentials. Casino
Enterprise Management Magazine named MultiPLAY one of
its 2009 Slot Floor Technology Awards winners, selected by
a panel of six slot floor operators looking for the year’s most
innovative products.
“Within our intensely competitive realm of penny
denomination multi-line slots, Wolf Run ® MultiPLAY instantly
achieved and has since remained the reigning
‘revenue king’ at the Grand Casino Hinckley property,”
said Robert P. Allen, corporate vice president of slot
operations Grand Casinos Minnesota. Allen has 2,000
penny themes on his floor, and Wolf Run ® MultiPLAY is
outperforming all of them.
“After over 70 days on
the floor, it’s clear that
mere novelty is not driving
the performance – this
game has real substance
and strong player appeal.”
In addition to playing up to four video slot games
on the same machine at the same time, players can hit
four progressives sequentially or even hit four bonuses
on one spin. Bonus rounds fill the base game screen,
and play one after the other. “It’s the multi-hand video
poker experience now in a multi-game video slot for
the very first time,” said Ryan Griffin, IGT product
manager for Core Products. “And the flexibility,
superior design and options provided by MultiPLAY
video slots set it apart from all the competition.”
MultiPLAY Video Slots themes available today
include Cleopatra ® MultiPLAY Video Slots and Wolf
Run ® MultiPLAY video slots. A variety of additional
themes are already in development, guaranteeing to
keep casino floors fresh with new content.
“The performance on the games has been
outstanding,” said Matt Wetzell, director of slot
operations at Casino Fandango in Carson City,
Nevada. “This is the best game to come out in years.
MultiPLAY has consistently performed between 3.5 to
4.5 times better than the average Casino Fandango
game. And we are definitely ordering more.”
Casino operators can configure MultiPLAY video
slots to let players choose how many games they want
to play at any given time. “This option, alone, makes
MultiPLAY video slots the most player-friendly product
of its kind available on the market,” Griffin said.
25 years of professional experience in the gaming
and hospitality industry. Most recently he was the
he continued the transformation of TI into an adultfocused,
world-class resort. Prior to TI, Mikulich was
Senior Vice President of Casino Operations at
The Mirage.
Mikulich is considered by his peers as one of the
foremost leaders in the gaming industry and is also
recognized for his effective management style and
ability to lead major change initiatives.
“Tom brings with him in-depth knowledge of
player behavior, casino resort operations, player
marketing, slot analysis, and an exemplary record
of building and operating large organizations that
are dominant market leaders,” IGT Executive Vice
President of Gaming Products Rich Schneider said. “I
believe his knowledge of our industry from a casino
operator’s perspective will be key in helping us
meet customers’ needs and ensuring we deliver an
outstanding lineup of high-performing MegaJackpots ®
products.”
Mikulich’s involvement in the TI re-image was the
result of a comprehensive strategic planning process
that created a more performance- and customerdriven
organization. What followed was the opening
of a new nightclub, award-winning restaurants, major
spa and salon renovations and fully remodeled hotel
rooms and suites, the sum of which lead to increased
revenues in all areas.
At The Mirage, Mikulich was instrumental in
increasing revenue, raising customer satisfaction and
positioning The Mirage as an industry leader.
“To strengthen the MegaJackpots ® product
offering, I’m utilizing the same analytical skills,
supportive management style and financial discipline
that I’ve successfully used in the past,” Mikulich said.
“IGT already has a strong product base and high
commitment to customer satisfaction, and I’m looking
forward to building on that foundation.”

Super Nova Blast! games offer variety
IGT has taken four great game play concepts
and put them together into one new multi-level
progressive bank. Super Nova Blast! games offer
Multi-Layer Display ® (MLD ® ) technology, three playerselectable
game themes, a group play bonus, and
a new twist in progressives all in one vivid package.
With all this excitement, these games will give slot
players many reasons to get excited.
Boris Hallerbach, IGT product manager for
MegaJackpots ® products says, “The games combine a
group play bonus with MLD ® versions of spinning reel
themes based on successful math models. We believe
that’s something the traditional slot player will
really like.”
Players become eligible for the bonus when they
accumulate their first bonus multiplier, which occurs
when three Super Nova Blast! symbols land on reels
one, three and five. The bonus is triggered every
four to six minutes or when a player accumulates five
multipliers. The higher the multiplier value, the more
chances the player has to win the progressives.
The bonus includes the new Progressive Streak
feature, where the player can win the progressive
start amount multiple times. Eric Nelson, IGT game
producer, said this feature is why players will love the
game. “Players can win the same progressive level
start amount more than once, at random,” Nelson
said. “That adds great anticipation to the bonus itself.
Players will hope it keeps going.”
Super Nova Blast! Multi-Level Progressives
include three base games players can select from the
game menu: Abra Cash Dabra , Ringmaster Riches
and Pteryodactyl Triples REELdepth Slots. This
means each bank automatically enhances the floor mix
and makes it easy for players to find the theme they
prefer.
Rounded reels on the MLD ® display take this
technology to yet another level of innovation. The
games offer more realistic action with every spin, in
“With each increased wager, players not only have
they also increase the progressive amount,” said IGT
The 5-reel base game offered with this product
creates the look, sound and feel of spinning reel slots.
Players really like the three-dimensional game play.”
When configured for 60-line play, the base game
has a 5-credit-per-line bet for a 300-credit maximum
bet. Players who cover all the lines betting 1 credit
per line, or a total of 60 credits, are eligible for the
lowest in-house progressive level. If players wager 2
credits per line, they are eligible for the bottom two
progressive levels. If they bet 3 credits, they qualify for
the bottom three progressives, and so on. This means
players can control the number of progressive levels
for which they qualify.
The base game features stacked bars that fill the
reel area. The number of stacked bars that appear
starting from the left reel determine which progressive
is awarded. If two stacked bars appear starting
from the left, the lowest progressive, progressive
The Crystal Fortunes bonus feature is modeled
after the popular Top Dollar ® -style accept/reject
bonus. This feature is triggered when three crystal
ball symbols appear on reels 1, 2 and 3, which then
transition the base game to a pick screen. The player
picks one of three cards, which reveals three, four or
five offers and may award the Crystal Ball Preview
feature. Players then choose whether to accept or
reject the offers. If the Crystal Ball Preview feature is
awarded, players not only get to see the current offer,
but also get to see what the next offer will be if they
reject the current offer.
“The look-ahead feature empowers players to
make the best decision for accepting a bonus offer
and adds another level of excitement to the already
Product Manager Will Foster said. Each offer reveals
up to two awards which can either be progressive
The Crystal Fortunes MLP will release on IGT’s
must-haves
New and expanded properties don’t
open their doors without them
As more jurisdictions are approved and
subsequent casinos crop up across the country, one
thing remains evident: MegaJackpots ® games are
essential to any successful gaming floor. Whether
it’s opening day of a brand-new property or the
completion of a highly anticipated expansion,
operators know they need popular MegaJackpots ®
themes to keep players happy.
When The Meadows Racetrack and Casino
in western Pennsylvania unveiled its $175-million
casino in mid-April, Director of Slot Operations
Michael Jankoviak knew his MegaJackpots ® games
would ensure player satisfaction. “MegaJackpots ®
games have brand recognition,” Jankoviak said.
“New players immediately recognize the themes,
such as Wheel of Fortune ® , eBay and Indiana
Jones .” And he knows that leased games keep
the casino floor new. “Seven of our top 20 banks
are MegaJackpots ® . Updated themes also help in
keeping the banks fresh.”
While Jankoviak had the benefit of knowing
what worked from The Meadows’ facility, Richard
Strafella was starting anew at his property. As Vice-
President of Casino Operations for brand-new M
Resort Spa & Casino Las Vegas, Strafella understood
games are
the demand for MegaJackpots ® games would
exist from day one. “[Guests] have an expectation
that these games should be on our floor,” Strafella
combined with “great sign packages,” the playerfavorite
MegaJackpots ® themes are easy-to-find, he
said.
IGT works with operators to help build a profitable
and successful gaming floor. Randy Reedy, Vice
President of Slot Operations for the recently expanded
Valley View Casino in Southern California, relies on
IGT’s expertise about which products would perform
best. “IGT knows its products better than we do,”
Reedy said. “We leave a lot up to them to maintain
the floor and keep their number of games up.” Valley
View favorites include Red Hot Jackpots ® , Wheel of
Fortune ® and Megabucks ® , all of which provide a
good product mix and that chance at a life-altering
jackpot that players look for on a casino floor.
A balanced game mix has been the key to
Downstream Casino’s success since it opened last
July in Quapaw, Oklahoma. “You put your best foot
forward with your game mix,” Slot Director Robert
Moritz said. “We did a good job putting games in that
the players already knew plus a percentage of new
MegaJackpots ® games.” Moritz said another success
factor is IGT’s commitment to keeping the floor
rejuvenated. “IGT makes sure they [MegaJackpots ®
in delivering good games to players because IGT is
constantly coming out with good products. It’s a good
business partnership as IGT delivers fresh new themes
throughout the year for the players.”
IGT’s MegaJackpots ® games are consistently voted
the most popular by players. Operators of new and
expanded properties understand the necessity of
MegaJackpots ® for a thriving casino floor. Partnering
Big wild wins await players
Big 7 Slots
Extra large Big 7 symbols are equal to the
size of three Stacked Wilds ® , and are wild for all
7 symbols during game play. Non-traditional by
appearance, the symbols animate in 3-D and pop
out to accentuate the win. When oversized Big
7 symbols land, they turn the reel bright red
leaving the unlit reels to spin slower than usual for
anticipation. A popular configuration, this 4-reel,
25-payline game performs best when set-up as a
penny theme using the instant progressive meter
option in the top box LCD.
Lucky Dragonfly REELdepth Slots
Similar to the Magic Butterfly theme, Extra
Wild dragonflies flit around the reel area in 3-D
during the Free Games bonus. Symbols turn into
wilds when dragonflies land on them. Designed
to drive coin-in, the Extra Wild and Free Games
features can only be triggered with a max bet. The
Free Games bonus awards up to 40X the initial
bet. Lucky Dragonfly REELdepth -exclusive Slots
are buy-a-pay games with 30 paylines.
Free Games and locking
Red Hot Cherry Free Games Slots
In the REELdepth version, reels ignite,
cherries burst into flames, and symbols pop off
Cherry Free Games Slots have a unique locking
stack feature and Free Games bonus that play off
Cherry symbols can lock reels two or three while
the remaining unlocked reels spin. The player can
also win more Free Games when he hits three
bonus symbols on the unlocked reels. This theme
is also available on the S AVP ® model.

A working partnership with
Systems Account Management
Keith Brewer is the
binding that keeps the
IGT – San Pablo Lytton
partnership strong.
Going beyond what’s expected
Service with a smile. And listening
skills. And problem solving skills. And
perseverance. At IGT, our Network
Systems account managers not only
come with a good attitude, but they
have a passion for saving your casino
time, money and headaches.
The entire San Pablo Lytton Casino
management team is beyond satisfied
with its IGT account management
service. Its managers and directors are
downright thrilled with their experience
with IGT, and it’s because of people like
Keith Brewer.
San Pablo Lytton General Manager
Kathi Hammel; Director of Gaming
Machines Saeed Tavassoli; Director
of Information Systems Jeff Arnold;
Director of Marketing Bill Vincent; and
Marketing Manager Erin Anthony sang
their praises and told us what casino
life is like with an attentive and effective
IGT liaison.
“The tribe has empowered our
management team to partner with
IGT,” they said. And Keith Brewer is
the binding that keeps the partnership
strong. “He has the whole package –
easy to work with, good people skills
and he’s fun.”
Investment is an operative word
when it comes to any effective
relationship. If a customer invests its
money and confidence in IGT, we
invest everything we’ve got. Brewer’s
investment in a customer is unwavering,
and “going the extra mile” is an
understatement for him.
“He had an interest in the
casino and our success,” San Pablo
management said. “He has a good
sense of urgency, follow-through and
persistence. He took things as far as he
could – and then a step further.”
That extra step, pushing beyond
what’s expected, means better results for
a casino. For San Pablo, Brewer identified
issues and resources in “no time,” saving
time and money. If an issue happened
with the Xtra Credit ® bonus, he made
sure an IGT resource arrived at the
property within hours.
“He understood our business,” San
Pablo management said. “He was also
great in connecting with the right person
to help us solve our problems. Last
October, our customers would put cards
in about 20 percent of our machines and
couldn’t access Xtra Credit ® . In less than
24 hours, he had a technician on
property to research this. They reviewed
logs at IGT, and even before the
technician solved it, he already knew
what was wrong.”
Brewer’s customer service philosophy
is fairly simple. “I treat our customers
as I would want to be treated as the
customer,” he said. This golden rule
proved to be paramount in an effective
relationship with San Pablo.
“I try to understand that a customer’s
interactions with IGT are dynamic, always
changing,” Brewer said. “I needed to
be sure they could count on a consistent
and reliable point of contact within IGT to
represent their concerns accurately and
to help find resolutions and answers.”
Brewer’s and the San Pablo
management team’s sentiments align –
this partnership is symbiotic. As Brewer
puts it, they don’t have a traditional
vendor/customer relationship. IGT
and San Pablo have a partnership – a
partnership that positively impacts
both parties.

It’s go time!
sbX Floor Manager, the industry’s
received approval by the Nevada
Gaming Control Board in September
2008. Following this milestone, IGT
delivered the game-changing sbX Tier One package. The package
combines sbX Floor Manager with
the flexibility of IGT’s AVP ® models
and access to the IGT game library.
sbX Floor Manager revolutionizes the
game theme conversion process by
allowing you to change and configure
operational costs.
This package is an all-inclusive,
The importance of GSA and IGT’s involvement
IGT is the thought leader
when it comes to the movement
towards open protocols and the
collaboration with the Gaming
Standards Association (GSA). IGT’s
involvement with the GSA is an
example of the importance of
widespread adaptation of open
protocols for the industry.
“We stand behind open in our
actions,” said Rich Schneider, EVP,
of Gaming Products and an original
founding member of GAMMA
(GAMing Manufacturers Association,
predecessor to the GSA). “IGT is
a major contributor of technical
resources within the GSA and
collaborated to create the open
protocols.”
“Helping to create the Game-to-
System (G2S) protocol was IGT’s first
priority when we rejoined the GSA,”
said Adrian Marcu, VP, architecture
and GSA board of directors member.
“IGT saw the value and importance
of the work so we committed a
great deal of resources to it. In all,
we authored over 50 percent of the
significant classes.”
The G2S classes IGT developed
then had to be approved by the
GSA community as a whole. The
final protocol was the result of
many meetings and many revisions,
according to Marcu.
Why is IGT committed to open?
“The open network is the basis
for the future of our technology
and our industry,” said Marcu. “IGT
implements the protocol cleanly
between the client and the system.
We don’t cloud the process with
unnecessary devices. Our systems
are built to be a genuine
representation of the open network
in the purest sense.”
IGT believes in a straightforward
interpretation of the protocol.
Now that the foundation is set, the
gaming world can start to see the
impact this has on the whole player
experience.
“Once the open infrastructure
is in place, the industry will evolve
toward an ecosystem of thirdparty
killer applications providing
the ultimate personalized player
experience. This will accelerate
industry innovation, and will change
the way casinos interact with their
customers,” said Javier Saenz, VP of
Network Systems.
The proof
IGT’s Service Window
exemplifies open, and is built
into new AVP ® games without
any unnecessary hardware and
associated costs. This allows
operators to invest money in
applications that drive revenue and
enhance the experience.
“This year, we are releasing the
first fully G2S-compliant system,
represented in slot accounting,
player tracking, ticketing, Bonusing
and floor management. It’s not just
parts of it, but the complete product
line,” said Schneider.
Beverage on Demand, a
third-party application created
by Las Vegas Gaming, Inc. (LVGI)
provides an example of how open
applications plug into sbX Media
Manager (see page 41) to display
on the Service Window. Because of
the open protocols, integration was
seamless and efficient.
The lowdown
“Customers need to really
understand the differences in what’s
available,” said Marcu. “There are
numerous options and protocol
interpretations emerging in the
market but they are not all equal.
Selecting a server-based system
is a decision with long-reaching
impact. Cost, both direct and
indirect, flexibility and technical
strengths and weaknesses must all
be considered. Another thing is
inclusiveness. IGT has carefully and
deliberately developed its serverbased
products in the truest, most
inclusive way possible. Our system
allows all other manufacturers to
communicate with it, free of any
alliances. I can only hope that stays
true for other systems providers.”
In the name of
collaboration
The Global Technology &
Interoperability Center illustrates
IGT’s commitment to open,
strengthening relationships within
the gaming industry in the spirit
of collaboration. The Center
was accredited by the American
Association for Laboratory
Accreditation (A2LA) to certify IGT
products according to the GSA’s
“Protocol Certification Program.”
This was the first such accreditation
granted to a gaming manufacturer.
how interactive it was.” In addition to the scheduled
The three P approach
How the right people, processes and
products are improving Global Support
Services
It’s been an important year for IGT’s service and
support teams. A very customer-centric approach
has prompted numerous operational improvements,
and the preliminary results are promising. Slot Line ®
sat down with IGT Director of Global Support, Sean
Sauter, to discuss some of the biggest changes and to
look ahead at what’s next.
Slot Line ® : You came into this role and immediately
threw the old playbook out the window. Why?
Sean Sauter: I had been involved with IGT services
for a long time when I was given the opportunity to
come into this role. We have a good group of people,
but we weren’t setting them up for success. And as
a result, our customers suffered. The first thing I did
was get the group together and say, “Let’s rethink
everything. Starting now, our internal and external
customers are at the center of everything we do and
every change we make.” The ideas started flowing
immediately.
My personal philosophy is you have to put
together the right people, processes and products.
Each is a stepping stone to the next. Only when you
have all three implemented correctly can you make
the kind of significant improvements we’re striving for.
SL: OK, let’s start with people. Does this tie in with the
Global Support Center’s new team?
Sauter: It does. When I came in, I noticed we were
asking the first-level people to be the masters of all
products. Since these are highly complex systems,
this didn’t make a lot of sense to me and it wasn’t
benefiting our customers. We ended up being a
routing center and not a solution center.
The Global Support Center’s first level is now
managed by Richard Marx, a true call center
professional with years of casino operations experience.
Richard has begun to put the metrics in place to identify
gaps in our business and ultimately put good solutions
to work. The people on Richard’s team will know how
to ask the right questions so they can understand the
problem and respond correctly the first time. And if
the issue requires an expert, the customer is quickly
matched with the right second-level resource.
Sean Sauter, IGT director of global support, puts the
customer first.
Our second level of support consists of two
highly-specialized groups: the Applications Support
and Field/Systems Support teams led by Thuy
Cao and Dwaine Balius, respectively. The secondlevel
teams work very closely with the first-level
responders to share knowledge and expedite service.
The Applications Support group focuses on the
operational aspects of IGT products: marketingrelated
questions, accounting-related challenges,
etc. The Field/Systems Support team focuses on the
technical aspects of supporting IGT products and
their integration to non-IGT technology like Microsoft,
Marathon or VMware. Each team has the expertise
necessary to address any issue.
SL: Have the new teams implemented new
processes too?
Sauter: Our processes were old and didn’t align
with the needs of our customers. We streamlined
everything from incident severity and priority levels, to
the escalation processes that move them through the
organization. Additionally, we put better processes in
place around transitioning customers from installation
to ongoing support.
SL: And that leads us to products.
Sauter: Yes, once we got the people and processes in
place, we focused on the products that tie everything
together. One of the first things we looked at was the
remote access product we were using to troubleshoot
and monitor our customers’ systems. SecureLink, our
new, preferred tool, provides us instant access to our
customers’ systems. SecureLink is a simple, yet secure,
product that doesn’t require a system engineer for
setup and follows every required regulatory security
model. Because of how the virtual support network is
configured, we spend less time connecting and more
time with our customers. So far, customer feedback
has been great.
SL: How does the Global Support Center’s new
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system
work into this?
Sauter: Replacing Clarify with the new CRM system
was our product change. Our new Service Tickets
system is much easier to use than Clarify and
improves the incident and service request process.
When completed, it will be tightly integrated with
our SAP and telephony systems so it provides us a
comprehensive 360-degree view of our customers that
includes their games, systems and support profiles.
Now that we have greater access to data, we can
measure, analyze and react quickly to customer and
product-related trends.
SL: What’s next?
Sauter: More self-service options. One thing we
have coming up is a new knowledge base system to
better distribute information to our customers via the
Web. It’s a company-wide effort and, when it’s ready,
customers will be able to access an unprecedented
amount of information on IGT.com without having to
pick up the phone. People are becoming more and
more tech savvy and we want to give them tools to
September2009 SLOTLINE
have more details in the coming months.
Really, our work will never be done. The Global
Support team will always be looking for ways
to improve our customers’ experience. We are
completely committed to their satisfaction and hope
they are already feeling the difference.
Tapping into the holy grail of gaming – that next
table games mini-networks. People with a common
interest (playing and winning a particular game) come
together and create a social group of sorts. And odds
and strategy aside, most table games players thrive
on the interaction and consider it an important part of
the experience. Now imagine a more defined node –
a younger player who not only appreciates the social
interaction of a table game, but
seeks novelty. He’s going
to check out your
new M-P Series
product. And
he’s going to
like it.
“These games do great things for the player
and the operator,” Richards said. “Many casinos in
non-table games jurisdictions can offer something
they couldn’t before, and players are exposed to a
new, innovative table game experience. Plus, these
products are great for players who have always
wanted to try their luck at a table, but were just
too intimidated. The belief is that the players are
more comfortable in this setting due to it not being
as ‘public’ to learn the game and possibly make
mistakes.”
The next generation player was raised on
interactivity, and expects more from gaming
entertainment than ever before. IGT’s M-P Series
games provide the social, technologically charged
experience new players are looking for in a casino
spins to success
Excellent averages prove game’s worth
“Roulette Evolution is one of the hottest games
in the building,” said Phil Trofibio, Motor City Casino
Hotel vice president of slot operations. “We are wildly
ecstatic about the game’s performance on our floor.”
Roulette Evolution , the first game released for
the M-P Series setup, is now approved for a majority
of jurisdictions in the US and Canada. The positive
response to the game by players is changing the
way many operators’ view the multi-player electronic
gaming market.
Open since 1999, Motor City Casino Hotel in
Detroit offers a wide variety of slots and live table
games. Executives at the property had initial concerns
that Roulette Evolution might pull players away from
their live table games. Eight months after the go-live
date, those concerns never materialized.
“We’re clearly seeing a younger demographic
than our typical slot player playing this game. Most
are similar in age to our table games players,” added
Trofibio. “But we’ve experienced no draw down from
our table games.”
Although not the first to deliver a multi-player
product to the marketplace, IGT spent extra time
developing the best possible result. “We waited
until we knew we had a superior product,” said Tim
Richards, IGT director of table games. “Our customers
want the best. And we worked until we got there.”
With 850 slots, 38 table games and live poker
on the casino floor, River Cree Resort and Casino in
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, taps into a robust locals
market. They were looking for the right product when
they installed Roulette Evolution in March. “We
previously had a competitor’s product on the floor,”
said Bob Arnett, manager of casino programs for the
Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). “It
was nice looking but it just didn’t attract the
game play.”
Each year more than two million guests visit
Casino Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. The property
features 791 slot machines and 35 table games. They
added the Roulette Evolution game to the mix last
November. “We have several years of experience,
and limited success, with other electronic table game
products,” said Elliott Daradich, director of product
development for Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.
“Roulette Evolution is the most successful e-table
product in our product offering to date, and it
continues to exceed our expectations.”
There are many factors that determine the success
of an electronic multi-player game – math, graphics,
comfort, ease of wagering and more. It involves
much more than simply converting a live game to
its electronic counterpart. “Developing games for
the M-P Series allowed us to add improvements
in wagering convenience and customer comfort not
found in a traditional scenario,” Richards said.
The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi was the M-P
Series Roulette Evolution test site for the Mississippi
Gaming Commission in May and June of this year. By
mid-May, Slot Operations Manager Tarzan Treadway
was already impressed. “We looked forward to having
these games installed, as we are always looking to get
the newest and most exciting games” he said. “The
numbers have started out strong.”
Treadway said he believes several factors are
impacting the popularity of the game: the regular
pace of the electronic version, the ease of placing bets
on the touchscreen video monitor and the ability to
learn the game without the intimidation factor of a live
table game.
Another reason often cited for the success of the
Roulette Evolution game: it creates an experience
bridge by bringing traditional table games players,
slot players and younger players familiar with
electronic games together on one game. They may
enjoy playing for different reasons, but this game
brings them all to the table.
“It appears Roulette Evolution has done exactly
what we had hoped,” said Steve Lautischer, AGLC
manager of gaming products. “It has validated
consumer acceptance of electronic versions of table
games, while maintaining volumes at the traditional
tables. It bodes well for our market’s continued
product-mix diversification.”
If operators were unclear about whether the
market is ready for M-P Series electronic multi-player
products, the success of Roulette Evolution is making
it clear. The proof is in the numbers.
Balkans casinos tap into the
power of IGT games and AVP ®
IGT’s Advanced Video Platform (AVP ® ) is
continuing to revolutionize the international gaming
industry because of its unmatched flexibility and ability
to seamlessly download games, systems and software
to keep up with changing player demands. AVP ® offers
a fresh new lineup of new themes as well as wellknown,
classic themes, all with attractive widescreen
LCD monitors, downloadable player button panels and
duel display monitors. AVP ® flexibility allows for quick
game conversions to the international marketplace.
As the international gaming market place continues to
grow, IGT is leading the way around the world.
The Kolosej Group is among the first to bring IGT’s
innovative AVP ® to the Balkans. The installation took
place at Casino Rio, which is operating as a part of
Kolosej Group in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Casino Rio has
had a long established relationship with IGT, previously
installing the successful Multi-Level Progressives of
Fort Knox ® , Party Time! ® , and EZ Pay ® . The addition
of IGT’s G20 machine models featuring AVP ® gave IGT
Europe over 60% market share within the group.
“These are great new additions to our floors. Our
players really enjoy them and we are proud of being
the first in Slovenia and Serbia to have this cuttingedge
technology and continuing our long established
relationship with IGT,” said Ursa Zupan, director of
casinos for the Kolosej Group in Slovenia.
In addition, Kolosej-owned Casino Royal Rio in
Serbia, which opened in April 2009, is the first casino
to operate the Red Hot Jackpots ® MLP in all of the
Balkans, and recently installed IGT’s G20 machine
models featuring AVP ® .
Turning green ideas into action
Saving water and electricity at IGT’s Reno
headquarters
After more than ten years of implementing green
initiatives, IGT’s Green Team is still looking for new
ideas to make the company more environmentally
friendly. IGT recently implemented two significant
projects at its Reno headquarters with the goal of
saving large amounts of water and electricity. IGT
now uses reclaimed water for its landscaping irrigation
and has implemented a virtual server solution in its
data center.
These projects illustrate how IGT turns great green
ideas into action, making things happen for the good
of the environment with minimal impact on the bottom
line. It’s good for the company, the community and
the planet.
Saving 600 swimming pools full of water
It just makes sense to save water when you live
in a desert area. For that reason, this spring IGT
transitioned the landscaping irrigation system at its
Reno headquarters from the city water supply to the
county’s reclaimed water system. The company did
initial testing to verify the system would have sufficient
water pressure and that no other problems existed.
IGT removed the irrigation system from the city water
source shortly after those tests, replacing millions of
gallons of fresh water that would otherwise be used.
“The project will keep us from using approximately
15 million gallons of fresh water per year,” said John
Butterfield, IGT Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
“That’s enough to fill the average backyard swimming
pool 600 times. We’re excited we were able to make
this happen.”
The company’s next water-saving initiative will
focus on reducing water usage inside the Reno facility,
starting with restroom fixtures.
What if you could take 47 cars off the road?
In its Reno data center, IGT implemented a virtual
server solution. A typical computer data center has
racks full of computer servers. Each server is usually set
up to run only a few computer software applications.
With this solution, many virtual computers run on one
physical machine. This means one computer is able
to do the work of many. More applications can run on
one server, making it possible to reduce the number
of computers in the data center with little to no
impact on the end user. Besides the obvious electricity
savings due to fewer servers in the data center, the
new configuration emits less heat, resulting in lower air
conditioning usage.
It’s estimated that the project will save
approximately 372,000 Kilowatt Hours annually. That
translates to a savings of 280 tons of carbon emissions,
equivalent to taking 47 cars off the road. That’s enough
electricity to power 41 homes.
NV Energy recognized IGT for its reduction in
energy usage, and IGT received a rebate as part of NV
Energy’s Sure Bet energy savings program.
Aaron Thomas, IGT Administrator of Systems and
Applications, spent three months planning, preparing
and implementing the overall solution. “Anytime NV
Energy can give IGT a check instead of the other way
around is a good thing,” he said. “To be part of the
process that got us that recognition makes me feel
really good.”
Bob Stecker, Aaron Thomas and Gary Fritz celebrate the
success of IGT’s participation in the NV Energy Sure Bet
program.
Thomas credited IGT’s internal developers,
application support owners, and its Network team for
a lot of hard work. “Without their help I could not have
completed the project,” he said.
The VMWare configuration can be used with
