In May 2006, the five mayors of
the municipalities that make
up the North Sea Canal Area
reached agreement on a joint
approach to safety and security
in this canal region – with the
aim of bringing a wide range of
safety and security initiatives
into alignment. In October 2005,
the European Parliament adopted
the Portwide Guideline to be
implemented in the middle of
2007. It concerned phase two of
the Worldwide Guidelines for
Port Security. (Phase 1 involved
the ISPS Code for port companies
in particular). The Portwide
Guideline provides for security
measures to be taken in the entire
port area. As part of this effort,
Amsterdam has taken stock of
the risks and categorized objects
that could be at risk.

Producing well-trained port workers
in sufficient numbers is very
much part of sustainable development.
In various projects, the
port authority has teamed up
with the business community
and educational institutes to improve
the image of port-related
jobs and to develop training
programs specifically geared to
port operations. For example,
2006 saw the launch of a project
that reimburses half the costs
incurred by newly arrived companies
in the Port of Amsterdam
or Schiphol Airport in recruiting
and training low-skilled workers
active in logistics, production and
assembly.
