cruise shipping
Cruise shipping is the only portrelated
activity that remains in
downtown Amsterdam. And for
good reason. Amsterdam’s historic
city center is a very popular
destination for cruise ships. Adding
to downtown Amsterdam’s
appeal is the Passenger
Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) at
the IJhaven (IJ Port), which is a
wave-shaped landmark building.
In 2006, 92 sea cruise ships visited
Amsterdam Ports. In 2006, the
number of passengers on board
was about 190,000 – up more
than 12% in comparison to 2005.
The strong growth in the number
of passengers is not immediately
reflected in the number of sea
cruise ships because these vessels
are becoming ever-bigger
in size.
The river cruise market is also
booming. In 2006, 1,085 river
cruise ships called at the Port.
In 2005, the figure was 771.
Likewise, the number of passengers
jumped from 96,000 in 2005
to 160,000 in 2006, which is a
staggering increase of 65%. The
number of cruise ship calls booked
so far for 2007 indicates that
the number of vessels and passengers
will exceed those in 2006.
