many years. 26,27 Since people do not know that they have the condition they are<br />

more likely <strong>to</strong> infect others. New infections fell from 7,900 in 2005 <strong>to</strong><br />

approximately 7,800 in 2006. New infections among heterosexual people have<br />

been falling since 2003. The infection rate among gay <strong>men</strong> has risen by 20% over<br />

the last five years and is continuing <strong>to</strong> rise. Studies indicate that 30% of those who<br />

know they are HIV positive continue <strong>to</strong> have unprotected sex. 28<br />

Many people experience flu-like symp<strong>to</strong>ms in the first couple of months; these may<br />

include:<br />

a high temperature and fever;<br />

a sore throat;<br />

fatigue;<br />

a skin rash;<br />

muscle aches and pains;<br />

headaches;<br />

nausea and vomiting; and<br />

diarrhoea.<br />

If the virus is allowed <strong>to</strong> spread, your immune system will eventually become<br />

weakened and you will develop AIDS (au<strong>to</strong>, or acquired, immune deficiency<br />

syndrome) which will eventually be fatal because your resistance <strong>to</strong> cancers and<br />

infections will be significantly <strong>lower</strong>ed making you vulnerable <strong>to</strong> other STIs and a<br />

range of infections, including:<br />

infections of the mouth;<br />

recurring mouth ulcers;<br />

herpes or shingles infections;<br />

unusual types of pneumonia;<br />

tuberculosis (TB);<br />

infections of the brain and eyes;<br />

hepatitis C:<br />

unusual skin problems: and<br />

infections of the gastrointestinal tract.<br />
