The <strong>Max</strong> <strong>Planck</strong> Society<br />

The <strong>Max</strong> <strong>Planck</strong> Society <strong>for</strong> the Promotion of Sciences was founded in 1948. It<br />

operates at present 93 <strong>Institute</strong>s and other facilities dedicated to basic and applied<br />

research. With an annual budget of around 1.46 billion € in the year 2012 and thirdparty<br />

funds in addition, the <strong>Max</strong> <strong>Planck</strong> Society has about 17 000 employees, of<br />

which 5400 are scientists. In addition, annually about 4800 junior and visiting scientists<br />

are working at the <strong>Institute</strong>s of the <strong>Max</strong> <strong>Planck</strong> Society.<br />

The goal of the <strong>Max</strong> <strong>Planck</strong> Society is to promote centers of excellence at the <strong>for</strong>efront<br />

of the international scientific research. To this end, the <strong>Institute</strong>s of the Society<br />

are equipped with adequate tools and put into the hands of outstanding scientists, who<br />

have a high degree of autonomy in their scientific work.<br />
