"Yesterday afternoon a train <strong>of</strong> camels—<br />

single and double humped—arrived in town<br />

from Virginia City, loaded with merchandise<br />

for <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Albert Mau. Although<br />

not heavily laden <strong>the</strong>y were 13 days making<br />

<strong>the</strong> trip from Virginia. The whole weight <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cargo was 5,500 pounds—<strong>the</strong> greatest<br />

load carried by any one animal being 700<br />

pounds. There were 12 camels in <strong>the</strong> train,<br />

half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number being mere youngsters<br />

who were packed with light loads <strong>of</strong> 50 to<br />

60 pounds. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> animals had <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

feet, made tender by <strong>the</strong> snow, bound in<br />

lea<strong>the</strong>r to protect <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> stony<br />

ground." This item was printed in <strong>the</strong> Reese<br />

River Reveille in March 1941, originally appeared<br />

in <strong>the</strong> same paper in 1866.<br />

For emergency military and naval purposes,<br />

3,697,646 acres <strong>of</strong> public domain land<br />

in Nevada have been withdrawn by <strong>the</strong> government.<br />

This is almost three times more<br />

than has been taken from any o<strong>the</strong>r western<br />

state, according to Harold L. Ickes, secretary<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior.<br />

Nearly 10,000 acres <strong>of</strong> land in Elko county<br />

have been set aside as a new reservation for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Temoak bands <strong>of</strong> western Shoshone Indians.<br />

resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Piute Indians <strong>of</strong> Pyramid<br />

lake reservation and restore a sportsman's<br />

paradise threatened with extinction are some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> a dam and fish ladders being<br />

buiit on <strong>the</strong> Truckee river, which empties<br />

into <strong>the</strong> lake. In <strong>the</strong> past 70 years water surface<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pyramid lake has been lowered 65<br />

feet. Fish population <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lake has declined<br />

dangerously, Indians felt keenly this<br />

loss <strong>of</strong> revenue and subsistence.<br />

Trapped under an avalanche <strong>of</strong> snow, Karl<br />

J. Wilkinson, 28, forest ranger, was killed<br />

near here in March. Wilkinson was working<br />

on a snow survey when he was caught in <strong>the</strong><br />

path <strong>of</strong> a slide.<br />

Elko . . .<br />

An army bombing plane is given credk<br />

for saving <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> a 5-year-old boy, critically<br />

ill m Rio Tinto, copper mining camp<br />

<strong>of</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Nevada. When Dr. T. R. Seager<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rio Tinto telephoned to Salt Lake, <strong>the</strong> prescription<br />

said to have meant life or death to<br />

<strong>the</strong> little patient was flown to Elko in a<br />

bomber ordered to make <strong>the</strong> mercy flight from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ninth bombardment squadron. When <strong>the</strong><br />

army pilots landed at Elko, <strong>the</strong> physician was<br />

waiting at <strong>the</strong> airfield with his automobile.<br />

Ninety minutes later, <strong>the</strong> doctor was at <strong>the</strong><br />

child's bedside. Later <strong>the</strong> boy was reported<br />

"much improved."<br />

UTAH<br />

Salt Lake City . . .<br />

Ten-year permits for grazing on federal<br />

lands, instead <strong>of</strong> annual licenses as heret<strong>of</strong>ore,<br />

will be issued to 400 applicants in two<br />

Utah districts, according to Chesley P. Seeley,<br />

regional grazier.<br />

Ogden . . .<br />

If <strong>the</strong> United States government fails to<br />

reimburse immediately 51 Utah beekeepers<br />

for losses <strong>the</strong>y claim through spreading or<br />

insect poison issued by <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong><br />

agriculture, <strong>the</strong> state honey and fruit industries<br />

will suffer severe additional losses this<br />

honey crop will be cut 25 to 50 percent unless<br />

<strong>the</strong> beekeepers' claims are paid, Grow<br />

said. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beekeepers haven't money<br />

to replace <strong>the</strong>ir honeymakers, but <strong>the</strong>ir losses<br />

will not be so great as damage to fruit growers.<br />

Bees, Grow asserts, are worth 50 times<br />

more to fruit growers as pollenizing workers,<br />

than to <strong>the</strong> honey producers who own <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Morgan . . .<br />

Carl Francis swung a .22 rifle to aim at a<br />

target, <strong>the</strong> rifle went <strong>of</strong>f and <strong>the</strong> bullet killed<br />

Carl's fa<strong>the</strong>r in a nearby chicken coop. Carl<br />

didn't know he had shot his fa<strong>the</strong>r, reloaded<br />

<strong>the</strong> weapon and leaned over to set <strong>the</strong> gun<br />

butt down on <strong>the</strong> ground. Again <strong>the</strong> rifle<br />

discharged accidentally, this time killing<br />

Carl. Carl's bro<strong>the</strong>r was a witness, testified<br />

before a coroner's jury to <strong>the</strong> facts in this<br />

strange tragedy.<br />

Travel bureau figures show nearly 2,000,-<br />

000 tourists spent $37,406,802 in Utah during<br />

1940. In <strong>the</strong> same year tourist expenditures<br />

in California approximated $245,000,-<br />

manager. Opening events will include a<br />

rodeo, with parades featuring <strong>the</strong> pioneer<br />

phase <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program set for July 24. First<br />

fiesta poster was displayed late in March, as<br />

Manager White launched publicity campaign<br />

for <strong>the</strong> event.<br />
