hosted luncheon speaker Te rry Cuff ‘77, partner at Loeb & Loeb,<br />

clarifying how to pre p a re a winning writing sample. B L S A<br />

hosted Kim Firment, re c ruiting coordinator for <strong>the</strong> law firm<br />

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP, outlining <strong>the</strong> do’s and don’ts for<br />

getting “<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>f e r.” THE CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETYp resented a<br />

discussion with Crystal Crawford, executive director <strong>of</strong> The<br />

Alliance for Childre n ’s Rights. THE CRIMINAL LAW SOCIETY<br />

and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Chemerinsky welcomed Barry Scheck and Peter<br />

Neufeld discussing The Growing Innocence Project and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

busy planning a trip to <strong>the</strong> U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, Mexico.<br />

SPECIAL GUEST EILEEN KURASHI ‘75<br />

The Empress Pavilion Restaurant was <strong>the</strong> setting for<br />

APALSA’s Alumni Dinner on Wednesday, March 1, 2000.<br />

The gala event brought graduate Eileen Kurahashi ‘75, to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>ring to share her thoughts on <strong>the</strong> challenges and<br />

rewards <strong>of</strong> a life dedicated to <strong>the</strong> law. After reminding <strong>the</strong><br />

enthusiastic audience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ethical obligation to give back<br />

to <strong>the</strong> individual communities which had raised and nurtured<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, Ms. Kurahashi also encouraged those present<br />

not to be afraid <strong>of</strong> personal success. She urged <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

embrace <strong>the</strong>ir new careers and its challenges <strong>by</strong> first believing<br />

in <strong>the</strong>mselves. She explained, “You are entering a pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

where you will be tested mightily. There are few<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r jobs where you will find out what you are made <strong>of</strong>,<br />

mentally, psychologically, intellectually. It is a true adventure.<br />

Visualize yourself doing it well and <strong>the</strong>n go for it.”<br />

GLLU held a “No on Knight Rally,” in opposition<br />

to Proposition 22, with Patricia Ireland,<br />

MARCH president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Organization for<br />

Women; Reverend Shaun Eubanks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Campus Ministry, and City Councilman<br />

Joel Wachs. THE CRIMINAL LAW SOCIETY<br />

hosted its First Annual Judge’s and Lawyer’s Reception. THE STU-<br />

DENT BAR ASSOCIATION (SBA)danced <strong>the</strong> night away to a live<br />

salsa band at <strong>the</strong>ir spring party held at Isla del Mambo. RLAWS<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered “A Trend Toward <strong>the</strong> All Woman Law Firm” with guest<br />

speaker Celia Ruiz, partner and co-founder <strong>of</strong> Ruiz and Sperow.<br />

BLSA aided <strong>the</strong> homeless through a clothing drive. WLA hosted a<br />

luncheon with guest speaker Cindy Lott, deputy general counsel<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Democratic National Convention committee.<br />

<strong>USC</strong>JD/MBA NETWORK held its inaugural<br />

networking event at Café Pinot to discuss<br />

APRIL issues facing <strong>the</strong> law and business industries.<br />

PILF’s annual Pro Bono luncheon, which featured<br />

Patricia Schnegg, Los Angeles County<br />

Bar Association president, and former Law<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>Dean</strong> Scott Bice, saluted students who had volunteered on<br />

behalf <strong>of</strong> public interest. WLA showcased female Law <strong>School</strong> faculty<br />

as Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Arlen, Gross, Campbell, and Saks discussed<br />

women in law, <strong>the</strong> classes <strong>the</strong>y teach, and <strong>the</strong> road <strong>the</strong>y each took<br />

to become law pr<strong>of</strong>essors. THE ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY<br />

and THE ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETYheld an informational<br />

meeting. THE TAX LAW SOCIETY<strong>of</strong>fered its annual JD/MBT luncheon<br />

for law students interested in tax.<br />

WELCOMES JUSTICE CANDACE D. COOPER ‘73<br />

BLSA’s Annual Alumni Dinner, held in conjunction with <strong>the</strong><br />

Newly Admitted Minority Students Reception, took place on<br />

Wednesday, April 12, 2000.<br />

Keynote Speaker California Appellate Court Justice C a n d a c e<br />

D. Cooper ’73, challenged those present to make a diff e re n c e<br />

stating, “We are <strong>the</strong> lucky ones – we managed to get <strong>the</strong> system<br />

to work for us. What concerns me is our ability to take care<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village.” She continued, “As future leaders,<br />

lawyers, policy makers, we have an obligation and duty to do<br />

what we can to make certain that <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong> crime and<br />

p o v e rty compounded <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> true and meaningful opportunities,<br />

exaggerated fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> access to technology<br />

do not intersect in such a fashion as to make <strong>the</strong> current marginal<br />

position <strong>of</strong> our community a tragic, immutable,<br />

intractable, and irreparable facet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next millennium.”<br />
