just finished her Ph.D. in psychology, with a specialty in child development and will soon start as assistant professor at Mount St Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Under sightings, she reports that Michael Heckman who finished at Georgetown, but started at USC with us, is now married with a daughter and working at a financial firm in Washington, D.C. Speaking of starting with us, Maureen Baker, who finished a year after us due to a joint JD/MBA degree, writes of her rock ‘n roll gig: “I’m playing one night in Thailand, we headlined. I can’t re m e m b e r, but I think I had side pony tails and light blue sparkly eyeshadow (you know – re t ro 70’s) we generally push the sexy, flirtatious, MTV mid- 2 0 ’s young stuff. I see a nice looking tourist and after the first show, he i n t roduced himself as from L.A. My bass player blurts out that I’m a lawyer for my ‘day job.’ He becomes quiet. He says, ‘So am I.’ He asks where I went to law school. I say USC. He starts asking about professors, like he’s testing me — it dawns on me he went to USC too. I could quite remember all the p rofessors and I got the feeling he didn’t quite believe me. Knowing that I was staying in Thailand into Febru a ry, he says, ‘Hey, how did you pay your bar dues — they’re due Feb. 1.’ I re p l y, ‘No, they may be due Feb. 1, but no penalty attaches until March 15th. Now you R E A L LY know I’m a lawyer.’ I came back to LA and within 24 hours was working again on a trade secret lawsuit.” Ah, that’s my Mo! Joanne Rosen leaves us with a wonderful note fro m L.A. She writes, “Sorry I have nothing of interest to re p o rt, but I always like to see what you come up with.” We love hearing from you, Joanne, even if i t ’s “nothing of interest”! Terri Villa-McDowell Class Reporter C L A S S O F 1993 In the dawn of the new millennium, our classmates continue to shine, both p rofessionally and personally. In alphabetical order: Monika Arboles started her own employment law consulting business (“Employer Legal Solutions”), which focuses on handling sexual harassment investigations, conducting management training sessions, and advising start-up companies and high tech firms on how to navigate t h rough the myriad laws aff e c t i n g employers. Jeff Baglio made partner at Gray, Carey, Ware & Freidenrich in San Diego. Rebecca Berg is a happy mom to daughter Juilanne Marie Downing. Michael Brooks joined the law firm of Miles, Wright, Finlay (as in classmate Robert Finlay) and Zah in Costa Mesa and sat for the Nevada Bar, where the f i rm has a satellite office. B re t DiMarco is thoroughly enjoying his d a u g h t e r, Kyra, and vacationed in France for two weeks in July. Robert Finlay is expecting a son, John Thomas (“Jack”). Tavi (Stanley) Flanagan joined Irell & Manella in Newport Beach with several members of her former firm, Lobel & Opera. She is expecting her first child in July, 2000. Susan (Hansen) Fox is a planned giving officer for the American Red Cross in San Diego. Matthew Friedman is president of Northern Stamping, Inc. in Ohio, where he lives with his wife Tammy, his son, Alex, and his twin daughters, Sydney and Dre w. E r i c Gaynor has a third son, Will, who enjoys hanging out with his two older brothers. I read about Jeffrey Grube’s hard fought disability discrimination case filed in federal district court in San Francisco, which he settled this past spring. Lisa Hatton and her husband, Mark, vacationed in France for two weeks this summer, re l a x i n g , sightseeing, and wine tasting. She reports Andy Douglas is engaged. Gregory Hoffman left Proskauer Rose to join AT&T in San Francisco. Jim Kim is working in Disney’s legal department. Jim is married to Beth Ann. Jeff Koenig, a business litigator, is of counsel with Hennigan, Bennett & Dorman. Jeff is also a member of the board of directors of Jews for Jesus, a Bible teacher at Granada Hills Baptist Church, and active in the Los Angeles Chapter of the Federalist Society. C h e ryl Leutjen had a baby boy, Cameron Andrew Meyer, who within his first eight months has been on eight round-trip flights with Cheryl and her husband, to destinations including Rome, Bourbon Street, the Gulf of Mexico, and Great Bend, Kansas. Besides working at Texaco and traveling, Cheryl also finds time to fix up her 1928-vintage home. H o w a rd Levkowitz is partner at Tennenbaum & Co. R. Jane Lynch celebrated her 1 0 t h year wedding anniversary this summer and recently became a member of the board of the Academy for Dance and Kindred Spirits. After spending three years in New York specializing in estate planning, Nora Manj i k i a n - S i m o n i a n is working for the U.S. Department of Commerce in Massachusetts and, when time permits, assists on workers’ compensation, health, and immigration pro bono cases in the Boston area. Nora is expecting her second child in December and has a trip planned to Aruba in October. Richard Paul McClellan III is expanding his commercial litigation practice in Honolulu, Hawaii to include some white-collar criminal defense cases and a drug conspiracy case. This summer, Richard and Scott Dodd worked together on a case and managed to find time to ride the surf on the South Shore of Oahu. Last fall, R i c h a rd took a three-week trip to India, during which his son was baptized Hindu. Elizabeth (Otter) Molfetta works for the appellate / motion unit at the Orange County’s District Attorney’s Office and recently a rgued a search and seizure issue before the Fourth District Court of Appeal. As an appellate lawyer, Elizabeth is fortunate that she can work at home, allowing her to practice law and be a mom to her two childre n . Stephanie (Stenger) Montgomery i s succeeding at the perpetual balancing act of work and motherhood, playing with her son, Luke, in the mornings and developing residential subdivisions in the afternoons. Whatever Stephanie is doing, it must be right, because Luke looks so happy in all the pictures she e-mails to me. Gregory Mossman married his long-time girlfriend, Janna, and moved down from Washington to start his own firm in Rancho Cucamonga, specializing in estate planning, business law, re a l estate, and bankruptcy. Since moving back to California, Greg has become an avid scuba diver and is training to 80 USC LAW • FALL 2000
ecome an instructor. Keith Newburry joined Honeywell in Phoenix, Arizona as assistant general counsel. In September, Keith vacationed for ten days on a 47-foot catamaran in Tahiti with good friends and Jimmy Buffett. Rick Radillo has his own investment firm and contributes to the Spanish newspaper, La Opinion, on business issues. Don Riddick is chief information officer of Rainbow Books and director of technology for Paone, Callahan, McHolm & Winton in Irvine. Don is also the honorary chair of the Orange County Committee to elect Governor Bush President. Don’s recent pro bono cases include one involving internet copyright laws and another involving credit issues against Wells Fargo. In his spare time, Don teaches fencing, perf o rms wedding ceremonies as an ordained minister, and paints, winning several awards for his miniature paintings. Joseph Stumpf stopped practicing law in 1997 and meandered his way into private equity investing, holding the title of Vice President of Merger and Acquisitions for AT&T Wireless S e rvices in Redmond, Wa s h i n g t o n . Between law and business, Joe took some time off to be a ski bum and earn his MBA. After a two-year stint at Berrien County Legal Services and a brief academic detour to the University of Michigan for a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning, Charlette Pugh Tall has started her own general practice firm in her hometown of Benton H a r b o r, Michigan, practicing in the areas of criminal, family and municipal law. Charlette is the city attorney for Benton Harbor. On the personal front, Charlette married Sidney Tall III about two years ago and the couple loves to take weekend trips to amusement parks to ride the newest roller coasters. In January, Ann-Marie Villicana was one of twenty people to be inaugurated to the first UCLA Board of the School of Public Policy and Social We l f a re. In March, Ann-Marie was elected to the 44 th Assembly District Central Committee for a six-year term. At the same time, Ann-Marie also moved to Dilbeck Realtors in old town Pasadena. With whatever time is left, Ann-Marie continues to serve on the board of California’s Nature Conserv a n c y. If her professional life isn’t keeping her busy enough, Ann-Marie USC LAW • FALL 2000 was married on January 22, 2000 to Robin Salzer (who owns Robin’s Restaurant in Pasadena). Both Kelly Allegra We i l and Aris Art o u n i a n s attended the wedding. For their honeymoon, Ann-Marie and Robin visited Thailand as the guest of the Supreme Commander (which she explained is the equivalent of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the U.S.). After spending the beginning of the year backpacking, sailing, camping, hiking, snorkeling, and swimming in Australia for six weeks, Laine Wagenseller returned to Los Angeles to work with his dad in real estate development. K e l l y Allegra Weil is a senior associate with Wolf, Rifkin & Shapiro in the real estate and corporate law department. Last summer, Kelly married Daniel Weil. Paul Windust is now with Fleming and Phillips in Walnut Creek, practicing in the areas of business and real estate litigation and creditors’ rights. Paul noted that he worked on a real estate matter with John Shafai, which had a good result. Paul is expecting his first child (a girl) in September. Elayna J. Youchah continues to practice with Schreck Morris in Las Vegas in the areas of employment and labor law and commercial litigation. Jan Zemanek continues to work for the law firm of Mario Manella in Newport Beach, practicing in the areas of business and probate litigation. His daughter, Emily, was born in February of 1999 and he is expecting a second daughter in November. As for me, remodeling my new house has kept me busy; however, I do escape once in awhile to Napa Valley, San Francisco (where I saw Marty Brownstein), New York, and the South of France.
