Africa. He really enjoys the change of
seasons. My letter to Steve Licker
came back from the District Attorney’s
o ffice marked “re t i red.” Steve, let’s
hear from you. Well, there are still
some of us who are still practicing.
Bob Porter is still practicing in Long
Beach. Bob’s avocation is slow pitch
softball. Bob and his wife have been
married for 49 years and are looking
f o rw a rd to their golden wedding
anniversary! Bob’s granddaughter has
medalled for the past three years in the
Junior National Championships in ice
dancing. Having just completed a very
high profile capital murder trial,
Howard Waco says he may retire in a
year and travel. Stan Ralls called me to
tell me of the sudden passing of Tim
Miller in July. Stan represented our
class at the funeral. Tim had practiced
law in Temecula and was deeply
involved in the community. He was an
activist for the environment of the area
and was known as “the tree guy.” We
will all miss Tim’s humor and laughter.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to
his wife, Susan, his three sons and his
family.
The ranks of the working members of
our class are continuing to shrink as
more and more of us retire. Leonard
Mandel retired from the practice of law
and decided school was more fun, so he
is now a world history student at
UCLA. James Jackman retired the end
of July as a superior court judge for the
County of Orange and is now doing
alternate dispute resolution work. He
also plans to spend more time studying
music, especially the piano. Phillip
Feldman spends most of his working
time giving lectures and presentations
on legal malpractice issues around the
country. Perhaps we should all keep
his card handy. As for the working
masses, Bob Copeland is trying to keep
up with his five-year-old son and practice
law at the same time. At our age,
that can be quite an accomplishment.
Bob is active with ABA Committee
work and serves on several boards of
directors for clients, besides doing the
usual camping and little league things
with his son. Dudley Muth also writes
that he is still unfortunately working
but he does find time to play with his
granddaughter and do some fishing and
camping. John Westwater is also into
the grandchildren scene. His oldest
daughter is expecting their second
child in September. John and his wife,
Christine, have found time to travel,
recently returning from a cruise to the
Baltic Sea. John still works at United
States Trust, although he says he now
has a new appreciation for stock
options and employee stock plans
since U.S. Trust was recently acquired
by the Charles Schwab Corporation. I
am still on the bench in the Los Angeles
County Superior Court counting
down to retirement (unfortunately several
years away). Our youngest daughter
recently graduated from law school
with a joint degree in law and an MBA
in finance and has a job with a large
law firm in Orange County. Since she
will be making more money than I do,
her mother and I hope she will share
some of her largeness with us, since
she won’t have time away from the
office to enjoy it.
Mary Ann Cohen has concluded her
term as chief judge of the United States
Tax Court, and is returning to her
duties as a trial judge. This year she
will be conducting trial sessions in
cities throughout the country
(Spokane, Dallas, Chicago, El Paso,
Houston.) She hopes to be spending
time on the beach in Ventura throughout
the year as well. Attendance at her
40 th Hollywood High School reunion
provided a sense of nostalgia and impetus
to write. m a c a t t a x @ w e b t v. n e t.
John Gaims’ firm, Gaims, Weil, West
& Epstein, was twelve years-old this
June. Still specializing in complex and
business litigation, the firm is anxious
to celebrate its thirteenth birt h d a y
next June, with all appropriate attendant
readings, speeches, and celebrations.
The existence of four grandchildren
indicates his devotion to family is
generational. j g a i m s @ g w w e . c o m.
William H. Ginsburg has joined
Cotkin, Collins, & Ginsburg as a principal.
His trial expertise in defense of
medical institutions, from psychiatrists
to proctologists, from charity
hospitals to HMOs, has brought him
national attention. Occasionally, he
has been known to become involved in
low profile matters in the East. The
Malibu Bar Association voted him
Trial Lawyer of the Year, while he has
received informal “Turkey” award s
from friends as the civil jury trial count
approaches 300. Children are well and
happy, the younger two in college, and
David, now happily married, has
re t u rned from Guam. w i l l i a m g i n sb
Dennis L. Geiler continues as leader
and mentor of a small transaction law
firm in Newport Beach. Denny is
mostly involved with the practice of
wills, trusts, and probate. Joanne is
chiefly responsible for the growth of
their extensive self-storage businesses
t h roughout Southern Californ i a .
Denny’s pastimes include winter polo
in Indio’s Eldorado Polo Club, scuba
diving in warmer waters, and watching
and photographing wildlife. He’s set
aside the firearms for the cameras, to
the relief of thousands of migratory
birds. Daughter Shelley is at NYU Law
School, and has spent the past summer
i n t e rning for the Brobeck firm .
Denny@Geilerlaw.com. Steven Rosen
has reached the magical status of
“retired.” He lives in Encinitas, one of
Southern California’s truest Old Beach
Towns/New Development Fre n z i e s ,
where the native attire varies from
Birkenstocks (with socks in the winter)
to Gucci gowns. He visited almost
retired Judge Jack Lehman in Las Vegas
recently. Steve gets to ponder the generations
– his oldest son, Michael, has
provided four grandchildren, while his
youngest child, 15, just got a driving
learner’s permit. R1@abac.com. Marion
E. “Tut” Wynne remains a pillar of
Fairhope, Alabama. He is a partner in
a six-lawyer firm in Fairhope and is
still very active in Alabama State Bar
matters, particularly concentrating on
