• Most important collateral pathway for perfusion of the lower
leg is the deep femoral artery with its muscular perforators.
— In those individuals with peripheral occlusive disease, the
superficial femoral artery is the most often occluded
artery resulting in ischemia of the lower leg.
— The superficial femoral artery becomes the popliteal artery
after exiting the adductor hiatus. This artery bifurcates
into the tibioperoneal trunk and the anterior tibial artery.
