Madam President Gives Away Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh Awards
On 5 February 2008, H.E. Smt. Pratiba Devisingh Patil,
Hon’ble President of India conferred the Dr. Durgabai
Deshmukh Awards (2003 and 2004) for women’s
development on the organisations ‘Abhaya’ of
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and ‘Women’s Welfare
Society’ of Belgaum, Karnataka. The award is given every
year to an organisation that has done exemplary work
for the empowerment of women.
Addressing the gathering H.E. Smt. Pratibha Devisingh
Patil said, “...my deep concern is that women still do not
have the same opportunities as men. Real development
cannot take root if it bypasses women, who represent the
very pivot around which social change takes shape. For
achieving our objective of growth with equity and
delivery of services with people’s participation, the
mainstreaming of women into the national development
process is essential.”
Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Hon’ble Minister of state for
Women and Child Development (Independent Charge)
described the occasion as ‘a day we will mark in our
personal milestones’. She elucidated the human need to
recognise the work being done in society. Smt.
Chowdhury emphasised the need for team work and to
collectively address issues in order to carry forward the
torch of women’s empowerment.
Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh award was instituted in 1997,
the Golden Jubilee Year of India’s Independence, in
memory of Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh, the founder
Chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board. The
award carries a cheque of Rs. 5 lakh, a citation and a
shawl.
The sixth Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh Award for the year
2003 was awarded to Abhaya of Thiruvananthapuram for
its work to improve the condition of women mental
patients in Kerala.
