International Women’s Day Celebration<br />

ANANYA : SURVIVAL TO SUCCESS - CELEBRATE HER LIFE<br />

International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8 March<br />

<strong>2008</strong>. The theme for the Ministry of Women and Child<br />

Development for <strong>2008</strong> was “Survival to Success -<br />

Celebrate her Life”<br />

The week-long celebration commenced on 3 March <strong>2008</strong><br />

with a press conference as curtain raiser. Smt. Renuka<br />

Chowdhury, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent<br />

Charge) for Women and Child Development spoke to the<br />

press about the 24% hike in allocation for women and<br />

child development, a rise of 50% in the salaries to<br />

Anganwadi Workers and two special schemes for<br />

women’s empowerment - Dhanalakshmi (a conditional<br />

cash transfer scheme which monitors the growing up of<br />

the girl child) and Ujjwala (a scheme for rescue and<br />

rehabilitation of trafficked women). She also announced<br />

that proposals submitted to the Ministry would by handled<br />

by a computerised tracking system which will ensure<br />

greater transparency.<br />

Smt. Renuka Chowdhury also announced the launch of a<br />

public-private-partnership between VLCC, ITC and the<br />

Central Social Welfare Board for a Vocational Training<br />

Programme. Under this initiative, VLCC and ITC will<br />

sponsor the training of women inmates of Short Stay<br />

Homes in beauty care and house keeping so that they,<br />

become capable of taking up jobs in the private sector.<br />

On 4 March <strong>2008</strong>, a Conference on Prevention of<br />

Trafficking at Vigyan Bhawan was organised in<br />

collaboration with United Nation’s Office on Drugs and<br />

Crimes (UNODC) and IOM. The forum was represented<br />

by all stakeholders and the Conference was inaugurated<br />

by Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge),<br />

Ministry of Women and Child Development and Shri<br />

Vyalar Ravi, MOIA was the guest of honour.<br />

On 5 March <strong>2008</strong>, a Workshop on Prevention of Female<br />

Foeticide was organised at YWCA. It was inaugurated<br />

by Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for<br />

Women and Child Development and was well attended<br />

by various stakeholders from the Media, NGO community<br />

and spiritual organisations.<br />

On 8 March <strong>2008</strong>, presentation of Stree Shakti Puraskaar<br />

at Siri Fort auditorium was organised. Fifteen women<br />

were awarded Stree Shakti Puraskar by Smt. Sonia<br />
