International Women’s Day Celebration ANANYA : SURVIVAL TO SUCCESS - CELEBRATE HER LIFE International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8 March 2008. The theme for the Ministry of Women and Child Development for 2008 was “Survival to Success - Celebrate her Life” The week-long celebration commenced on 3 March 2008 with a press conference as curtain raiser. Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Women and Child Development spoke to the press about the 24% hike in allocation for women and child development, a rise of 50% in the salaries to Anganwadi Workers and two special schemes for women’s empowerment - Dhanalakshmi (a conditional cash transfer scheme which monitors the growing up of the girl child) and Ujjwala (a scheme for rescue and rehabilitation of trafficked women). She also announced that proposals submitted to the Ministry would by handled by a computerised tracking system which will ensure greater transparency. Smt. Renuka Chowdhury also announced the launch of a public-private-partnership between VLCC, ITC and the Central Social Welfare Board for a Vocational Training Programme. Under this initiative, VLCC and ITC will sponsor the training of women inmates of Short Stay Homes in beauty care and house keeping so that they, become capable of taking up jobs in the private sector. On 4 March 2008, a Conference on Prevention of Trafficking at Vigyan Bhawan was organised in collaboration with United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) and IOM. The forum was represented by all stakeholders and the Conference was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Women and Child Development and Shri Vyalar Ravi, MOIA was the guest of honour. On 5 March 2008, a Workshop on Prevention of Female Foeticide was organised at YWCA. It was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Women and Child Development and was well attended by various stakeholders from the Media, NGO community and spiritual organisations. On 8 March 2008, presentation of Stree Shakti Puraskaar at Siri Fort auditorium was organised. Fifteen women were awarded Stree Shakti Puraskar by Smt. Gandhi, Chairperson, UPA in the presence of Smt.Gursharan Kaur, wife of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. The awards are given in the names of Jhansi Ki Rani Lakshmi Bai, Kannagi, Rani Gaidenlieu, Devi Ahilya Bai and Mata Jija Bai. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.3 lakh and a citation. The awardees are selected by the National Screening Committee on the basis of nominations received from State Governments. Food and Nutrition Board organised a Health Exhibition at Siri Fort, and an Exhibition on Nutrition from 8-10 March 2008 on the Lawns of India Gate by the Nutrition Exhibition was inaugurated by Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Somnath Chatterjee in the presence of Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Hon’ble Minister of State for Women and Child Development (Independent Charge) on 8 March 2008. A wall calendar on nutrition for the year 2008-09 was released by the Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Somnath Chatterjee on the occasion of International Women’s Day. A booklet on nutritious recipies for complementary feeding of infants and young children developed by the Food and Nutrition Board was also released by the Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Somnath Chatterjee. The Ananya Flag on empowerment of women was hoisted by Smt. Sonia Gandhi. The message of Mr. Ban Ki moon, UN Secretary General, was read out by the Derector, UN Information Centre and Spokesperson of UN Secretary General. The Ananya Flag The Ananya Flag signifies the hopes and dreams of Indian women. Emanating from the east, the rainbow colours signify a new rising; bursting forth in freedom and unfurling the new hopes of the Indian women. Ananya, meaning ‘the incomparable’ is the theme of the festival. On this occasion, the Ministry of Women and Child Development also distributed specially designed bangles and bands in the ‘Ananya’ colours.
