USGS <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Restoration</strong> Initiative Projects <strong>in</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong><br />

In 2009, the Obama Adm<strong>in</strong>istration announced the <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Restoration</strong> Initiative (GLRI)<br />

to protect, restore, and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> ecosystem. The USEPA is responsible for<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g GLRI fund<strong>in</strong>g and is coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>teragency <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>in</strong> collaboration with<br />

15 other Federal Agencies.<br />

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) received fund<strong>in</strong>g for 25 projects <strong>in</strong> 2010 to provide tools<br />

and <strong>in</strong>formation to make effective restoration decisions throughout the <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>. A<br />

portion of that fund<strong>in</strong>g was allocated for work <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Lakes</strong> Michigan and Superior dra<strong>in</strong>ages<br />

with<strong>in</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong>. In 2011, USGS’s total GLRI fund<strong>in</strong>g was reduced by more than half and the<br />

projects be<strong>in</strong>g conducted and their scope were adjusted to address that reduction.<br />

USGS GLRI projects <strong>in</strong>clude work <strong>in</strong> tributaries, embayments, beaches, and the nearshore.<br />

These projects <strong>in</strong>clude monitor<strong>in</strong>g, model<strong>in</strong>g, remote sens<strong>in</strong>g, and development of databases<br />

decision support tools. A brief overview of the USGS projects <strong>in</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong> will be presented.<br />
