WVU is launching a more strategic and sophisticated
program of real estate acquisition and development.
WVU continues to analyze properties for possible
acquisition and will continue to acquire strategic
property. Properties of interest include those that
help define campus edges and for development into
gateways. A shift in strategy will place an emphasis
on using real estate assets to provide additional
financial support for institutional operations.
Three primary goals are (1) to use real estate more
effectively for improving instruction, research, and
service, (2) to increase its revenue base through
its real estate holdings, and (3) to continue to
and improve its good relationship with neighbors
through long-term land use planning.
The University will more fully integrate the
acquisition, development, and management of real
estate into its strategies for achieving objectives.
Real estate assets will be expected to provide new
revenues as well as providing productive space for
programs. Methods of achieving these goals include
ground leases, development with private for-profit
parties, natural resource sales, turning non-essential
gifted properties into investments and leveraging
endowment funds for financing. To effect these
actions the University may establish a real estate
development and management subsidiary staffed by
real estate professionals with expertise in acquisition
and development.
WVU also manages many farm and forest properties
Memorial, Reedsville, Terra Alta, Tygart Valley,
Willow Bend, Winding Gulf, and Ohio Valley, to
mention a few.

A potential campus is the WVU Charleston Research Campus. It is
located in the South Charleston area, and consisting of two buildings
on a 58-acre parcel. The property was once owned by DOW/Union
Carbide Corporation.
