Cars and Coffee by Manrico Mirabelli
As in the seminal 20th century ballet known
as the “Rite of Spring,” where sound and
movement come together to create an intense
experience, Chesapeake PCA members
also had the opportunity to experience their
own rite of spring. This one came together in
the form of engine displacement, traction,
and the intense feel of getting back behind
the wheel after a long winter rout.
One of Chesapeake Region’s mainstay events,
“Cars and Coffee” couldn’t have occurred on
a better day. The weather was gorgeous, the
company was enjoyable, and the coffee gave
a nice jolt similar to the response one feels
when stomping on the accelerator.
This day’s event took place at the Shallow
Creek Bookstore Café located in Edgemere,
MD. The menu at the Shallow Creek can
satisfy those with a zest for a high-octane
blend or a milder concoction. Along with
smoothies and a nice variety of breakfast
treats, the Café offers a relaxing, casual
atmosphere.
Approximately 20 club members gathered at
9:00 AM for the socializing. Jan Borchardt,
Membership Chair, tasked herself with
compiling an attendance list for good
measure while others sipped coffee and
talked about the passing of winter with a
6
great sigh of relief. Don Malson, Chesapeake
President, made his way through the crowd
with a friendly greeting, and Allen Gunzelman,
the Tour Meister, also showed the same
enthusiasm. I had the opportunity to meet
several new members who mentioned that
this was their very first Chesapeake PCA
event. As one member put it, “I just wanted to
get my feet wet first.” We definitely welcome
that kind of perspective and look forward to
more new members who share that opinion.
As always, the line-up of machines was varied
and impressive. From the oldest, being my
1980 911SC Targa, to the latest and greatest
Stuttgart creations, one can never deny the
visual stimulation. Even some of the locals
expressed their appreciation with casual nods
and beeping horns. At one point a passerby
was accepting offers for an authentic showroom
Porsche placard. A nice addition to any
Porschephile’s collection indeed.
The social was an excellent start to the 2010
driving season and hopefully a motivator to
get out and enjoy more of what the Chesapeake
Region has to offer. We have some
really nice driving/family oriented events in
the not-so-distant future to look forward to. So
come out and “get your feet wet.”
