PORSCHE PATTER ▪ SEPTEMBER 2009 ▪ Page 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY ANDREW TOTH
I
t's hard to believe August is in the rearview mirror
already. Although it passed quickly, we've
had five successful events in that time. We
started August with the monthly social, which was
once again held at the Olde Stein Inn in Edgewater.
Seventeen members showed up to enjoy tasty German
food and good company. Randy Richter and
Janet Jackson shared their recent experience at the
Porsche Museum in Germany and provided pictures, which we will share
with you soon. The September social will return to this popular location.
Later in the month we had our annual Crab Feast at Kemptown Park.
Nearly eighty people showed up for a summer afternoon of games, good
conversation, and a low-key car show with unusual classes. The weather
cooperated, and with all the food on hand, I can't imagine anyone went
away hungry. Thanks to Nancy and Don Malson for another outstanding
event.
The following weekend was a double-header with a Tech Session at Porsche
of Annapolis on Saturday and an Autocross on Sunday. The staff at
Porsche of Annapolis was impressed with a strong showing of seventy-five
members who attended to learn basic maintenance of their cars as explained
by tech Kent Phillips. Tech Chair and Executive VP, John Patterson,
was also on hand to answer questions from members. Our fourth
autocross of the season was held on a picture-perfect day at the Dorsey
MARC lot. Spectators were treated to drivers in a variety of cars in the
hunt for the coveted top spot in their class. Omar Lopez went home with
FTD in his 2004 GT3.
We finished up the month with another fun social at the Shallow Creek
Bookstore Cafe in Edgemere. Tourmeister Allen Gunzelman has organized
events at this locations several times this year, and each one is a crowdpleaser.
So as you see, it's been a busy month. But wait, there's more. The 40th
Annual Chesapeake Challenge is coming up on September 26th, and we
have more tours, autocross, tech, and social events planned. As always,
check the web site for the latest information.
I hope to see you at an event soon.
TECH BY JON PATTERSON
o n the 22nd of August PCA Chesapeake met at
PORSCHE of ANNAPOLIS for a practical tech session
on the maintenance needed to keep our cars at
peak performance, some of which we can do ourselves!
We had a great turnout, with over 75 members, friends and kids
walking around, visiting with old friends, meeting new friends and
noshing on coffee and doughnuts — but best of all getting useful
information on what it takes to work on your own car!
I understand that Bob & Joanie Purgason had a great day recruiting
new members for the PCA BOXSTER REGISTRY. If you are interested,
their contact information is with Bob’s report later in the Patter.
Look for photos from the event on the web and elsewhere in the
Patter.
Stay safe out there!
EDITOR’S CORNER BY JAN BORCHARDT
Well, when I said I’d see you at an event, I never dreamed
it would be so many people! Eighty people at the Crab
Feast, 75+ at the Tech session in Annapolis, not to mention
the old and new friends at Shallow Creek in Edgemere.
This presents a new challenge, identifying people in the event pictures
and who won what with which car. This is an amazing challenge, consid-
ering there are over 600 Porsche owners in the club, most with significant
others that almost double the total number of members. Also, I think it
would be fun to know how many PORSCHEs this represents. We have
three ourselves.
This brings me to my request(S) for the month (not that I’ve had much
feedback on the others):
1. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE PATTER WITH-
OUT IDENTIFICATION. (Especially if you want the picture)
2. EVENT ORGANIZERS, PLEASE EMAIL (OR FAX-410 391-2559)
EVENT INSURANCE LISTS TO ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER
THE EVENT
3. COME OUT TO EVENTS AND GET YOUR PICTURE IN THE PATTER!
Thanks for listening—See you at an upcoming event, I hope!
CHESAPEAKE CHALLENGE 40
on the Bricks of Everedy Square and Shab Row
Chesapeake Region invites all of its members and friends to celebrate the 40th
annual Chesapeake Challenge, the oldest running multi-event weekend in PCA,
on Saturday, September 26th in Frederick, Maryland. For 2009, we are reprising
last year’s highly successful and popular one day format, providing a full Saturday's
worth of activities that will offer tremendous value (and a few surprises) for
your registration fee- not to mention a chance to make a little history at the very
first ever downtown Chesapeake Challenge. And since this is the 40th Challenge,
we’re inviting PCA’s Boxster Registry, whose cars and owners comprise one of
the newer but more enthusiastic segments of PCA.
This year's Challenge Concours d’Elegance and Car Show will be center stage on
the bricks at Frederick’s Everedy Square and Shab Row, a delightfully quaint
shopping and dining area in the older section of town just east of Main Street,
Frederick, Maryland. Challenge Concours competitors will stage in the Everedy
Square area as well as at several dedicated parking lots across and up the street,
which promise cool shade and plenty of room. Our Porsches will be artfully ar-
rayed at a refurbished historic downtown location within walking distance of bistros,
antique dealerships, and shops. Check it out on the web at http://
www.everedysquare.com/ Lunch will be on your own, with a wonderful and varied
selection of eateries in the Square and in downtown Frederick proper.
Saturday afternoon will find you and your Porsche enjoying Steve
Kinsley's Gimmick Rally, which will wind its way around the delightful
country roads and through the covered bridges of Frederick County on Saturday
afternoon. Chesapeake Gimmick Rallies are like tours with a unique set
of instructions, so all who have enjoyed the region's tours in the past should be
equally thrilled with this event.
The Gimmick Rally will bring everyone back to Frederick’s very own downtown
winery, Frederick Cellars- just a block north of Everedy Square and Shab Row.
Frederick Cellars is a charming winery in an historic brick building which offers a
selection of award winning wines for our pleasure. Whether you go on the Gimmick
Rally or stay in Frederick for the day to shop and tour the city’s interesting
Civil War history, Frederick Cellars is the perfect location to complete the day’s
events. Check it out on the web at: http://www.frederickcellars.com/index.html
When you arrive, take in the many impressive features of the winery, sample a
glass of wine and delicious hors d’oeuvres, and then prepare yourself for the
third and final event of the day- a special Tech Quiz entitled ‘Porsche at the Movies’.
You don’t have to know that 2009 is also the 40th anniversary of Porsche’s
exotic 917 to do well on this quiz!
After the Tech Quiz, enjoy an evening of socializing and a superb buffet dinner
catered by the Renaissance Chefs while the scores are tallied. Trophies will follow
at around 7:15 PM, and we should conclude our exciting day not later than 8:00
PM. We hope you’ll want to wind down with some mellow jazz afterwards and
stay for Frederick Cellar’s featured entertainment beginning at 8:00 PM that evening,
the very popular Josh Walker Jazz Duo.
The cost for all of this fun on the 40th? Why $40 of course! Just $40 buys you
three great events, the opportunity to enjoy downtown Frederick, and to spend a
lovely fall day with some of your favorite Porsche friends.
If you have any questions, contact Ellen (ellen@bexstr.com) or Bob
(silber_pfeile@yahoo.com). Please note that drive-up registrations will not be
accepted this year. We apologize up front, but we must have a solid count for
the winery and caterer and we must know the number and types of cars for staging
at the Concours and Car Show. If you cannot register and want to spectate
at the Concours that morning, you will be directed to park in the lots behind Shab
Row- you will NOT be able to park on the street or in the Concours or Car Show
paddocks. Deadline for entry is Monday, September 21st and no kidding!
The monthly PCA Chesapeake Social was held on Sept 9th at the OLD
STEIN INN in Edgewater Maryland. Their rendition of German Cuisine is
always enjoyed by our members. If you plan to attend any of PCA Chesa-
peake events, it is suggested that you give the co-coordinator, Steve
Kinsley, a call or an email so that the restaurant can plan for the numbers
of attendees.
OCT 25TH ▪ FALL FOLIAGE FRIENDLY FARMS TOUR
EVERYONE is invited to join us for the FALL FOLIAGE FRIENDLY FARMS (NEW
ROUTE) drive & dine in Upperco MD. Sunday October 25th. The first drive to
Friendly Farms was led by Stuart Fine, I believe in 2003, and The Chesapeake
Region has continued with this popular location. This year a new route is charted
to make everything new and interesting for those that joined us for the previous
colorful drives. Located off Mt Carmel Rd. not far from Rt. 83, they have an as-
sorted variety of selections and desserts. We will meet at the Grauls supermarket
parking lot on Mt Carmel Rd just east of RT 83 at 9:30am and leave sharp at
10:00am. The restaurant will open at 11:15am, 45min earlier than usual to get
us checked in and seated. Check the web site http//friendlyfarm.net/ for selec-
tions, you won't be disappointed. Please e-mail Allen Gunzelman Tourmeister to
give us a head count at: Tours@pcachs.org
NOV 8TH BLACKWATER REFUGE TOUR
Members and guests! Sign up for the spectacular
fall drive thru Maryland's own nationally acclaimed
BLACKWATER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE on
the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland
(www.friendsofblackwater.org/) and dine after-
wards at the HYATT Resort in Cambridge MD.
Robert Vigorito, who organized this tour 4 years
ago is promising the same wonderful experience. On Sunday, November 8th,
Porsche families will gather at the Hyatt Resort in Cambridge, Md, at 9:30am and
leave for the Refuge at 10am. The migration of birds and other wildlife will pre-
sent great photo opportunities worthy of framing. We will end back at the Hyatt
Resort around 12:30pm, for lunch and conversation about beautiful sightings that
make memories. For those so inclined, Maryland's Eastern Shore offers great
sightseeing at the Refuge and many quaint waterfront towns like Oxford, St
Michaels & Cambridge for exploration after the lunch. Please let the Tourmeister
know ASAP if you plan to attend, and the car you will be driving.
Tour@pcachs.org, Allen Gunzelman, Tourmeister & Robert Vigorito, Organizer
PORSCHE PATTER ▪ SEPTEMBER 2009 ▪ Page 12

The current plan is to do a Tour, beginning at a location to be determined
in Frederick, possibly a restaurant. We would gather for a social hour/
dinner on your own from the menu at 6pm, then leave for Antietam at
7:00pm. If anyone is willing to help with this, Volunteers are encouraged
to contact Ellen Beck. This should be an outstanding kick-off to the Holi-
day Season!
UPCOMING EVENTS
DEC 5TH ▪ TOYS FOR TOTS LITERACY DRIVE
The beauty of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program is that each dollar donated pur-
chases a book for a needy boy or girl, inspiring them to learn through reading.
“When we worked with the Toys for Tots organization to create this year-round
effort, our hope was not only to put books into the hands of our most economi-
cally disadvantaged children, but also to raise awareness of a significant issue
facing our nation, an issue that has become even more critical in these economic
times,” said Stuart Mathis, president of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc., which franchises
The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. brands.
Our second Annual TOYS FOR TOTS LITERACY DRIVE has now been routed for
December 5th. Cars will gather at 9:30am near the BelAir Md Starbucks (620
Market Place Dr) adjacent to Barnes & Noble and Einsteins Bagels. The
shopping center is at Rt 1 & Rt 24. We will leave at 10am for a scenic
drive ending at Honeygo Village Center where donations to the Toys for
Tots Literacy Program can be made at THE UPS STORE. Receipts will ac-
knowledge monetary donations. Then lunch/happy hour at Libratore's
resturant. Porsche friendly parking will be provided. New, Unwrapped
Toys will also be accepted.
SEPTEMBER BOXSTER REGISTER NEWS
My report this month will be to give my experience at the “Porsches2Oxford” event at Oxford,
Ohio. First of all the good news, there were 80 Boxsters registered for the event.
That was a 35% increase over the Boxster attendance for 2008 at P2O. Those are numbers
to be proud of. The bad news however had to do with the weather. Friday before
the event was beautiful, as was Sunday. Saturday (the day of the event) it rained, and
rained, and rained. That was a shame, because the organizers had put so much effort
into it. But, the enthusiasm by all was still there, and out of the registered and expected
500 cars, 409 showed up in spite of the weather.
Not bad for a less than desirable day for a casual
Porsche party. There were many beautiful Porsches,
from older to new, and many very nice
Porsche owners to talk with and share ideas. The
biggest and greatest thing that happened at P2O
was this; the P2O Chairman, Brice Kadel, presented
to the American Cancer Society a
check for $10,000.00. That large amount came
from the event proceeds. That’s a lot of money
for a very worthwhile charity, and I’m proud of
P2O for what they do to support this organization.
Something else that also happened there at P2O is worth reporting. A Boxster owner from
Missouri was there, and he unexpectedly had a dreaded “Check engine light” come on his
car (a 2000 Boxster). He was concerned like any of us would be, especially being a full
days drive from home. He and I chatted, and he said he wanted to get the car checked
out before heading home. Not being familiar with the area, I steered him to a person I
knew who lived locally, another Boxster owner, friend and Boxster Register member. To
keep this story reasonably short, I can report that the local person made the necessary
arrangements for the Missouri owner to get his car into the Cincinnati Porsche dealer at
7:00 AM on Monday, there the Technician was able to resolve the issue within an hour
and a half, and the Missouri owner was happily on his way home shortly thereafter. The
amazing part is that due to the circumstances, his bill from the Porsche dealer for services
rendered was $zero. Not a bad outcome I would say, and mostly all of this is due to the
fact the local Boxster guy was willing to help out in a situation where his knowledge of the
people and the facilities in the area really paid off. Bottom line, it’s a wonderful story
when there’s a happy ending, and fellow Porsche owners can help each other. It’s probably
not a rare story, it likely happens all the time but we don’t get to hear about it. I hope
to have a reunion with both of these Boxster owners next year at P2O.
Our next local event is the 40 th Chesapeake Challenge, which will be really close when this
article is published mid September. I hope there is a very strong contingent of Boxster
owners participating in this year’s event. I plan to be there, and hope to see you. I’ll
have plenty of Boxster Register applications for anyone who is interested in signing up.
The Chesapeake Region Boxster owners are encouraged to contact me, if you haven’t
already, to become a member of our growing Boxster Register.
NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 CUP RACE CAR TO DEBUT IN FRANKFURT
World's Most Successful Race Car adds Power, Proficiency
ATLANTA - August 26, 2009 - Stronger, wider, faster - Porsche's new 911
GT3 Cup car is the latest-edition of the world's best-selling and most suc-
cessful production-based race car of more than 1,400 units. It will be in-
troduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show September 17-27, 2009, along side
the previously-announced 2010 911 Turbo and 911 GT3 RS.
For the first time, the race car is based on the street-legal 2010 GT3 RS
version. However, in keeping with tradition, it continues to be assembled
on the same production line as all road-going Porsche 911 vehicles in
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Like the flat-six "Boxer" engine in the new GT3
RS, displacement is increased by 0.2 liters over the former model to 3.8
liters and produces 30 more horsepower - 450 hp with a maximum RPM of
8,500. Additionally, it comes with a standard, sequential six-speed manual
gearbox and weighs 2,646 lbs (1,200 kg).
Also like the 911 GT3 RS, the GT3 Cup car features the 1.73-inch wider
body of the current 911 Carrera 4S, providing sufficient space for larger
wheels. Wider front wheel arches allow for three-piece light-alloy rims
measuring 9.5 J x 18 (previously 9 J x 18) utilizing 24/64-18 Michelin rac-
ing tires. The three-piece light-alloy wheels on the rear axle are up by one
inch in width, now measuring 12 J x 18 with 27/68-18 tires. The new 911
GT3 Cup is clearly recognizable at first sight through the special design of
the front end. The striking daytime driving lights come straight from the
current generation 911. Another carryover from the road-going 911 GT3
RS are the front body panels - as they prove aerodynamically-efficient for
racing duty. The front spoiler lip is more than 0.5-inches lower to provide
significantly more downforce on the front axle.
(Continued from page 25)
Downforce on the rear axle is also increased by the by virtue of a rear
wing that is over 9-inches wider than the street version, 66.9 inches vs.
57.5 inches respectively. The rear air dam, with its air vent openings as
well as the rear LED lights, also come straight from the road model.
Additional Unibal joints are featured on the track control arms and the
front and rear anti-roll bars are now adjustable to seven different posi-
tions, allowing for an even more precise set-up of the car to best match
each prospective race track.
The cockpit of the new 911 GT3 Cup caters even more to the specific
needs of the driver. An additional vent in the upper part of the front lid,
for example, provides the driver with a better supply of fresh air. The
controls for the Info Display are now positioned directly on the steering
wheel housing. And in addition to fore-and-aft adjustment, the steering
wheel may now also be adjusted for height as on the regular production
car. Since the current era of sports car racing in the U.S started in 1999,
Porsche 911 race cars have over 130 class victories, more than any other
manufacturer. In addition, Porsche has won seven of ten GT2 manufac-
turers' championships and eight of ten drivers' championships in the
American Le Mans Series. In addition, 911 race cars have won seven of
nine GT championships in the Grand-Am Road Racing series, including an
overall victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The new Porsche 911 GT3
Cup will be available later this year. U.S. pricing has not been announced.
Porsche Motorsport, located in Weissach, Germany, is the Porsche factory
division that is responsible for all worldwide Porsche motorsports activi-
ties. This includes not only the development, building, and servicing of
race car models, plus all customer racing programs, but also the engi-
neering development of Porsche street models like the 911 GT3, 911 GT3
RS, the 911 GT2 and, previously, the Carrera GT. Porsche Motorsport
North America, located in Santa Ana, CA, provides a support system of
race shop and at-the-track service for its U.S. professional and customer
