PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY ANDREW TOTH
I
n last month's Patter, I mentioned the upcoming
40th annual Chesapeake Challenge. This is
the longest running multi-event weekend in
PCA. Historically, Challenge was a multi-day
event, beginning on Friday night, and ending Sunday
afternoon. With the increasing demands on members'
schedules, and at the recommendation of co-chairs
Ellen Beck and Bob Gutjahr, the board voted to
switch to a one-day format for last year's event. The result was an outstanding
success.
I'm happy to tell you that Ellen and Bob are hard at work again this year,
and the result will surely be a memorable social event. This year's Challenge,
scheduled for Saturday, September 26, will be held in Frederick,
MD.
The day starts with a Concours d'Elegance and Car Show against
the scenic backdrop of Everedy Square and Shab Row - downtown
Frederick’s largest cluster of specialty shops, eateries and services
housed in beautifully restored 19th Century buildings in Historic
Downtown.
If you've had enough of looking at the fine examples of Porsches owned
by our membership and sharing motoring experiences (although I find
that hard to imagine), you can always enjoy a bit of shopping.
When I heard of the idea for the location, I was reminded of last year's
Parade in Charlotte, NC. It was the first time Linda and I attended a Parade,
but certainly not the last. I was most impressed by the array of Porsches
on display downtown, and I realized that I like cars displayed on
roads more than on grass. I've always been partial to cityscapes old and
new, so I may be a bit partial, but Historic Downtown Frederick promises
to be a perfect setting. I'm really excited about this location, and I'm very
glad we can bring an experience similar to last year's Parade back home
to our region members. Even if it's a little out of the way for you, I'm sure
it will be worth the drive.
So mark your calendars for September 26, and get ready for a fun time. I
know Linda and I are.
TECH BY JON PATTERSON
NEVER IGNORE THE DRIP!
K eeping
our cars at peak performance requires
attention to details, frequent fluid changes and
periodic filter replacements. However, weekly
or monthly inspections of engine, wheels and
under carriage can spot troubles before they get worse.
About a year ago, my daily driver needed the ECU reprogrammed because
the gasoline refiners were blending more alcohol into fuels than
when I purchased this vehicle 11 years ago. When the car was on the
lift, I was allowed under the lift to inspect the car. I noticed what looked
like an oil leak on the passenger side rear wheel hub. I asked the mechanic
if this looked serious. He said it was nothing, just a little seepage
from the axle seal. The other side was dry. So I ignored this seepage.
In December, I was walking out to my car and through the rear wheel
vents I could see the brake rotor looked grooved and rusted. So I set to
replace the brakes and rotors. When I removed the passenger side rotor,
the emergency brake pads had been destroyed and were coated with
gear oil from the axle seal failure. The inner part of the rotor had also
been damaged; this caused the rest of the rotors and pads to become
damaged. The damage compromised the braking ability of the rear brake
system.
The little ‘seepage’, over time, destroyed several other components. So
never ignore any signs of leakage, anything that looks out of place or a
rapid change in wear pattern!
Since I was able to make the repairs myself, the cost was only in parts.
How did I get the skills and confidence to tackle such a complicated repair?
By coming to the monthly Tech sessions! Join us at the next tech
session! They are held on Saturdays from 9am-12pm. We have doughnuts
and coffee, instruction on a specific topic, and good social time discussing
our cars! Please check the schedule and website for times and
locations!
Stay safe out there!
EDITOR’S CORNER BY JAN BORCHARDT
This is our first Internet only version of the monthly
publication of the Chesapeake Region of the Porsche
Club of America. It is a real challenge to determine
whether or not to change any of the familiar formats —
and even some of the not-so familiar ones.
I personally find it most difficult to read for an extended period on
a computer screen, especially proofing anything that I have typed
myself. So mostly I have been looking for Microsoft’s wavy red
lines because they tell me that a word is misspelled. But, it does
not tell me when a word is misused, such as “Meat me at noon.”
I’m hoping that you, the members, will have an easier time reading
these pages. I have taken Andrew’s (aka the web guru) advice and
tried to simplify the format to make it easier for you to focus on the
areas that you have the most interest in. Please feel free to offer
your opinions relative to any of the aspects of the Patter that you
may like or dislike.
Unless otherwise credited, I have taken the pictures used in this
publication myself. There are usually others at the events taking
pictures and these can often be found on the PCACHS web page.
You don’t need to see those pictures again in the Patter. BUT — I
am hoping to use more pictures in the Patter now that I am not
limited by print constrictions, so if you have something you think I
could use, just email it to me.
Also, if you think I have taken a picture of you and/or your car,
please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will email it to you.
Thanks for listening—See you at an upcoming event, I hope!
P2O JULY 25TH ▪ BOB PURGASON
On the last weekend in July there is an event in Ohio called Porsches2Oxford.
We have not been before, but after talking with others it seems like a terrific
event. What we are planning is to make it a 3-5 day trip, so we can enjoy what
ever else we find along the way out and back. We’ve made friends with the top
individual responsible for the event, his name is Brice Kadel. He will be coming
over from Ohio for the Hershey Swap Meet, so we can all talk with him and get
more detail about the event. The P2O website also has many pictures and video
from some of the past years, and they all look to be a lot of fun.
Last year they attracted almost 400 Porsches, and the goal this year is to have
500 cars. That’s quite a showing, and they have lots of vendors and some very
nice drawing prizes. The entry fee is just $25 with $5 of that going to the
American Cancer Society.
They have a Peoples Choice car show, with lots of very nice Porsches to look
at. We would certainly love to see A BUNCH of Chesapeake folks interested as
well.
MAY 30TH
It was Picture Taking Day in Frederick as Bob Gutjahr orchestrated a pub-
licity coup for the upcoming 40th Chesapeake Challenge of the Chesa-
peake region of the Porsche Club of America.
Not content with planning an outstanding lineup of events, Bob piqued
the curiosity of an amazing number of Porsche owners by suggesting that
he might use pictures of their cars in the Challenge Brochure.
The nearby stores were enchanted by the idea of a Car Show in their
neighborhood, and several were excited to hear we would all be back in
September. Bob, meanwhile, shuttled cars here and there and yon, in an
attempt to maybe get every business in at least one picture.
Anyway, there I was, looking for batteries for my camera, and taking pic-
tures of people taking pictures, taking pictures. People and cars I had
never seen before, just hanging out, sipping coffee and moving cars
around. It was a great time!
JUNE BOXSTER REGISTER NOTES BOB PURGASON
Using that old vernacular “Spring has Sprung” seems appropriate here since June
is now upon us. Warm convertible weather sure has seemed to be a long time
coming for 2009, but we are in full swing now. For those of us with the Boxsters,
this is “OUR” time of year, or at least for most of us. Early morning or later afternoon
rides are actually very refreshing to Joanie and I, and we often see many
other convertibles out doing their thing as well.
Jan has indicated that if I write something about our Boxster Register, she will try
to get it into this new online version of the Porsche Patter. That sounds wonderful
to me. I will seize this opportunity to be in touch with those who are current
members of the Boxster Register, and also try to appeal to those who are not
members to join us. I hope that as I start to meet many of the Boxster owners,
we will all appreciate these great cars as much as I do mine (probably more),
and help me pass the word around to others about our wonderful group.
In a previous issue of Porsche Patter, I mentioned the “Porsches2Oxford” event
taking place over in Oxford, Ohio in late July. We are very excited to do this
event in 2009. Last years’ Boxster count attending P2O was 52, so I am trying
my best to see that number grow substantially this year. The P2O event chair
and my friend Brice Kadel has a Speed Yellow Boxster S, so we pretty much talk
the same language. He’s helping me to attract both the previous P2O Boxster
attendees as well as getting as many new Boxster attendees as possible. I hope
some from the Chesapeake Region will consider going this year.
The Boxster models have been very well represented recently, especially in print.
First, the article that appeared in the March Panorama by Leonard Turner about
the introduction of the new 2009 Boxster models over in Sicily, using the former
roads of the famous Targa Florio race course. I thought that was a great article
(and what an experience for Dr. Turner), and his cover photo of the 2009 Boxster
S for that issue was dyn-o-mite. Then, Christophorus 337 did their piece with
their absolutely gorgeous photography, and finally an article entitled “How to buy
a Boxster” in the April issue of Pano by one “Bob Purgason” (don’t know who he
is). All of this great publicity has certainly helped to add to the popularity of our
favorite model.
Enough for now, I think. More reporting to come soon on my experience working
as a Volunteer for the June Club Race at VIR, and attending some of the
Chesapeake events. I hope to see you at some of these events, you can’t miss
the Guards Red Boxster S we fondly call ”Bruno Boxster”. Joining the Boxster
Register is a very easy process; anyone desiring a Register application can just
contact me by email as shown below.
Happy (and safe) motoring,
JULY BOXSTER REGISTER NOTES BOB PURGASON
When this article is published on-line, we will be into the summer months of great
Boxster weather and the region membership will be enjoying many of the activities
that come with summer. Our Chesapeake Region calendar offers some of
everything - autocross, touring, tech, social, and the upcoming 40th edition of the
Chesapeake Challenge. I certainly hope all Boxster owners are joining me by putting
those tops down and getting the cars out for all the fun they can provide.
The really good news for our Boxster owners is that we will be having our own
event tied in with the Chesapeake Challenge 40 (CC40) event. When I had a recent
discussion with the Chesapeake Board about bringing a Boxster event in for
next year, the comment was “Why don’t we do it this year?” It was an easy
question to answer, “Yes let’s give it a try”. So the wheels are now in motion (no
pun intended), and I anticipate we will have terrific support from our Boxster
owner/members from the Chesapeake Region, with as many other close by regions
as we can draw from, to make this a well attended first event. Our plan is
to have a Friday “after work” gathering of Boxster owners, with a speaker TBD, a
group dinner, and some time to just kick tires and talk about our cars. On Saturday
September 26th, we’ll all join in with and enjoy the spirit, friendship (and
competition) of the CC40 headquartered around Frederick, Maryland. So please,
Boxster owners, mark Friday evening September 25th on your calendar of “mustdo”
events – with a follow up date of Saturday September 26th for the CC40.
I am personally looking forward to the Zone 2 Rumble At The Oak Tree PCA Club
Race (VIR – June 26-28), which I will be attending as a Volunteer Worker. A report
of my experiences will be in the next Boxster Register Notes. It appears at
this time that we will have one of the new “Boxster Spec Race cars” in attendance
at VIR, so that will be very exciting and interesting. That will surely be a focus of
my attention while I’m there. Hopefully I will have more information about the
new BSR class, and pictures as well, to pass along.
In late July, Joanie and I will be traveling over to Oxford, Ohio for the
“Porsches2Oxford” event as mentioned before. I certainly hope I will see some
Chesapeake members going along as well. It looks to be a very well attended
event, with some 500 Porsches expected this year (that’s a bunch). The town of
Oxford seems to be very appreciative of having all those Porsches and the Porsche
people invading their town, so look for more on this in an upcoming report.
Don’t forget, when you read this in early to mid July, there is likely still time for
anyone to join in firsthand for the “P2O” experience; the date is Saturday July
25th. Let me know if anyone has any questions I can answer.
Please continue to enjoy those Boxsters at our Region events. If you haven’t
joined the Boxster Register, we’d love to have you do so. A simple email or
phone call is all I need to send you the information you need to join. No additional
fee is involved, so how could you go wrong? And, we’ll all be together on
Friday September 25th for the Boxster Bash, just before the CC40.
JUNE EVENTS
BOORDY VINEYARD TOUR
The evening of June 11th was overcast and cool. Not one car showed up
to take a short tour of the Long Green Valley ending at the famous Boordy
Vineyards’ Summer Farmers’ Market Nights, held every Thursday all sum-
mer long. But several had indicated an interest in the event so we drove
to BOORDY just in case. There was indeed live music, flowers, fresh
vegetable, artisan breads, and locally grown meat in a bucolic setting.
Since only one other Porsche joined us, the issue of parking was moot. In
spite of that, we had a great time with Jim and Scott Condax, who both
had a good time and plan to go again this summer.
ICE CREAM COTTQAGE TOUR
WOW! This drive had perfect weather, new members, new cars, a new
tour designer, places I had never seen before PLUS the executive head of
PCA and family, twisty roads, and a destination with super ice cream!
The drivers gather for some tips on driving the tour, designed by Mike DiBlasi
with his wife Cindy in the upper right corner of the picture. We skirted a state
park, wound through Elkridge noting some historic spots, tacked over to Ellicott
City and ended at Arbutus famous Ice Cream Cottage.
AUTOCROSS # 2 of the 2009 season took place at the Dorsey
Light Rail station on June 21st. Results are posted on
the web site.
Concentration in the timing trailer. Does anybody know how this thing gets to
and from the autocross site every month?
Ron Bremer checks his tire pressure between heats. Notice the cone pattern on
the course. Much rubber was left around those circles.
Come watch or help out at the next AutoCross at the Sykesville Training Center in
July. You’ll be amazed at the skill of the drivers and the number of people involved!
I think this is Art Cuevas lining up after a run.
Getting pictures of cars moving this fast is not easy with my little camera. Note
the parked cars that the course had to accommodate. There were 10 in all.
Below cars line up to take their turn around the course.
After I fix your Porsche, I take it out on a little test drive.
Just the basic stuff you’d do on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
